Trivia:
According to the original script, the Doctor was to give Rose's Doctor a small piece of "coral" from the TARDIS so that he could grow his own TARDIS. This was filmed and survived until the last edit of the episode, but was ultimately cut because the production team felt it made the Bad Wolf Bay scene "too long and complicated". In addition, Davies decided it should not be seen to be so easy to produce another TARDIS. more

The thing about this episode is that it wasn't necessarily bad- it just wasn't particularly good either. Looking forward to the finale of the series, I instead discovered it to be an extreme let-down. Let me outline why.
1. In the previous episode, the stage had been set for an epic battle between the Doctor & co. and the Daleks. What we ended up with was the Doctor being captured, Davros ranting away and not actually that much happening.
2. Suspense had been created with the 'one of the children of time will die' concept. Russell T. Davies decided to opt out on this with a clichéd 'she only died metaphorically' ploy. Disappointing.
3. The day was saved by what was effectively a Deus Ex Machina. The timely intervention of a never before mentioned 'metacrisis' was what meant that the Daleks were ultimately defeated.
4. They brought back Mickey Smith, who I just want to kill. He's annoying.
5. They brought back Jackie Tyler, who I also want to kill. Guess why.
6. One particular sequence annoyed me- the bit where the TARDIS was towing Earth back. The idea about the six pilots was good and charming and all that jazz, but the music? Cheesy or what!
Personally, I blame these failures on Graeme Harper and Russel T. Davies. Thus far, Davies has only written one episode which I considered to be of proper Doctor Who standard, and that one was Midnight. He goes awry here. Harper did not help the situation- his sloppy direction left the episode disjointed and somehow anticlimactic.
Like I said, not a particularly bad episode, but the above mistakes mean it's not as good as it should have been. Catch it if you've got the time, and definitely if you're a fan of Doctor Who, but otherwise...
On a separate note, long live Steven Moffat! I can't wait for his taking over of the show in 2010; it should be awesome. He should have been in charge originally if you ask me, but there you go.
