This is a remake of Vittorio De Sica's classic, "Umberto D." Our dear Bebel is playing the role originated by Carlo Battisti. He will be appearing with fellow legends Charles Aznavour and Max Von Sydow. The film is scheduled to debut in France and Belgium in January of 2009. This is Jean-Paul Belmondo's first cinematic role since having suffered the stroke that partially paralyzed him back in 2001.
I became a fan of Belmondo after I watched him in "That Man From Rio" around a decade ago. I have since discovered other gems by Bebel such as "Le Professionnel" - one of the best spy thrillers ever produced in Europe. True to form, Belmondo stopped making action films as he grew older and settled in supporting roles. Taking on Battisti's sole, majestic performance will be a feat worthy of Bebel's talent.
I eagerly await a U.S. release of the film, although it will likely turn up in the art house circuit rather than enjoy a widespread release on these shores. "Umberto D." is one of my top five European films ever, and I am sure Belmondo's version will be just as wonderful.
