I never in my life wanted to ever see one of my very favorite actors, Harrison Ford, paired up with one of today's worst actors, Brendan Fraser, but Hollywood made it happen. And the result, well, it's not that great. CBS Films has debuted the trailer for Extraordinary Measures today starring Ford and Fraser, as well as Keri Russell, in a heartfelt drama about a father's quest to save the lives of his two children. It looks like a very heartwarming story, but kind of like My Sister's Keeper, I don't really have any interest in seeing it. I'm not even sure why, but if it gets some great reviews, I may end up checking it out. What about you? Feeling merry? Disney and Robert Zemeckis sure hope so as they prepare to unload the technologically obsessed filmmaker's vision of Dickens' classic holiday tale, A Christmas Carol, in over 3,500 theaters (2,000 of which will be 3-D). Carol starring Jim Carrey may be Zemeckis' most successful debut using his beloved motion-capture technology -- which seems to have finally overcome the "hollowed eyes" criticism that befell his earlier attempts like Polar Express and Beowulf. Now it's really just going to come down to how many people are ready for some Christmas spirit this early in the fall season. (Some of us still haven't disposed of our jack-o'-lantern remains. »

Sofia Vassilieva may face off against exclusively modern-day problems on the big and small screen -- like a parental lawsuit in this summer's My Sister's Keeper and a psychic mother on CBS's Medium -- but in real life she claims to be old-fashioned. The 17-year-old star put aside her A.P. U.S. History homework and talked to Movieline about her favorite film scene, one that she says reflects a long-missed era. »

Colin Jacobson reviews the Matthew McConaughey chick-flick on the home format.
If there's a less ambitious actor in Hollywood than Matthew McConaughey, I can't think of him. McConaughey seems to play nothing more than cocky studs in romantic comedies. Even when he broadens slightly into more action-oriented movies such as or Sahara, he continues to take on parts in which he a) comes across as arrogant and self-absorbed, and b) takes off his shirt a lot.
2009's Ghosts of Girlfriends Past seems like such a cliché "McConaughey Vehicle" that it borders on self-parody. Connor Mead defines "love 'em and leave 'em". He's such a cad that not only does he dump three women at once, but he does so via a teleconference. When Connor attends his brother Paul's (Breckin Meyer) wedding, he does so out of a sense of morbid obligation, though he still hopes to convince Paul to stay »

One of my absolute least favorite genres is the "disease of the week" movie. There are lots of genres I prefer less than others, but in the case of this one, I can't understand why people like it. Why would anyone want to go see a movie about people getting sick and probably dying? The nearest I can figure is that, for viewers who like to cry, this is an almost certain tearjerker. Otherwise, perhaps it makes viewers feel good about not being sick. Who knows? But this week, fate has handed me an almost perfect example of what I hate about this genre, as well as an alternate example of just how it can work.
My Sister's Keeper (262 screens) is the bad one, though it does begin with a good idea. Anna Fitzgerald (Abigail Breslin) was created in a test tube essentially to provide "spare parts" for her older sister, »

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed This week is a little light in terms of quality new releases, but there are a ton of new Blu-ray catalog titles hitting the shelves, which I have listed in the "Even More" section at the end, so don't overlook those. Crank 2: High Voltage I just reviewed the Blu-ray edition, which you can read right here, but to tell it to you simply, Crank 2 isn't very good and this is coming from someone that really liked the first one. However, it does have a solid group of supplements, but is it worth buying a DVD or Blu-ray just for the supplements if you don't like the movie? Requiem for a Dream [Blu-ray] I also just reviewed this one, which you can read right here. There really is no short version way to discuss this movie, or at least »

The Notebook filmmaker Nick Cassavetes is suing bosses of a leading Hollywood studio after they reportedly dropped him as a director and refused to pay him any money.
The screenwriter claims he was hired by New Line Cinema to "supervise the script" for movie Elephant Orphanage, for which he agreed a fee of $275,000 (£171,875).
He was also reportedly promised "several million dollars" to direct the film - but Cassavetes insists he had to completely re-write the script, which he would normally charge $750,000 (£468,750) for.
In the lawsuit, Cassavetes states that after he finished the script movie bosses dropped him as director of the picture and refused to pay him any money.
The My Sister's Keeper writer is requesting $1,050,000 (£656,250) for his services, plus the money he was allegedly promised to direct the film. »

Nick Cassavetes is suing New Line Cinema over a claim that he was promised a job directing the film "Peaceable Kingdom" only to be axed from the movie after handing over a full rewrite of the script for which he was not paid.
Cassavetes, who has directed the classic chick flick "The Notebook" and this summer's tear jerker "My Sister's Keeper" for New Line, says the studio agreed to pay him $275,000 (plus an additional $25,000 for office space) in March to oversee script development.

Back in March we reported that Nick Cassavetes, the weepie director of The Notebook and My Sister's Keeper, would be shifting gears to direct Peaceable Kingdom, a drama about elephant conservationist Daphne Sheldrick. Now not only is that project not happening, but it's ending in a lawsuit. According to THR, Cassavetes is suing New Line Cinema, claiming he delivered a full rewrite of the script only to be booted from the project entirely. The lawsuit reads, "New Line made promises to (Cassavetes) that he would direct the film in order to obtain his services as a writer without having to enter into a separate writer's agreement and pay him his usual fee for a complete page one rewrite." Suing a major movie studio can't be easy-- they've got lawyers like I've got fruit flies-- but maybe New Line is an easier target, given that it's a studio that barely exists »

Summer movies? Boo! No, wait...Whoop-doo!
I think its both safe and fair to say this: Not one more movie ever needs to be made. Ever. Again. We've used up our fresh water well. We've gone to the depths and come back with the bends. Since its inception as an art form, each proceeding decade has been known for reinventing cinema on some evolutionary level. Then we hit the 80s, which was our last bastion of hope for imaginative storytelling. The 90s came on like a long slow drip of boring ineptitude. Or biggest hits were so-called duck press endeavors that managed to regurgitate everything that came before them. While Forrest Gump helped utilize and establish never before seen special effects, it was nothing more than a collage of past decades as reflected through the artistry of film. The same can be said of Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (though »
