More Cabin in the Woods Details

9 July 2008 1:03 AM, PDT | From DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news

A few more minor details have surfaced about Cabin in the Woods, the project we first mentioned yesterday that was penned by Joss Whedon and Cloverfield producer Drew Goddard.

An article in this morning’s THR, which focuses on Mary Parent’s revitalization of MGM as a production house, mentions that Cabin will also be Goddard’s directorial debut, but neither Joss, Drew, nor Parent would give any more details as to what it’s about.

"I'll be shot,” Parent told the trade. ”I've got like 12,000 online people outside. They've got me under pain or punishment, I'm not allowed to discuss. It's an intense visceral thrill ride and I'll leave it at that. It was everything you would have hoped with the two of them."

It’s not much, but it’s enough to keep my interest piqued! If all goes well, Cabin in the Woods should be shooting this fall.

Joss Whedon Sells His 'Cabin in the Woods'

8 July 2008 10:19 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

It looks like Joss Whedon will be heading back to theaters soon. No, it won't be Buffy or Serenity, but rather a thriller he co-wrote called The Cabin in the Woods.

Variety reports that MGM has bought the script, which was co-written by the film's director, Drew Goddard. I know...it's a little bit of a letdown knowing Whedon won't be directing, but it's a little exciting that Goddard - a writing and producing vet of Buffy, Alias, and Lost - should finally get a chance to direct. Especially when you weigh in the fact that he wrote Cloverfield.

We don't know much about the story, but I think we take a guess. I mean, it's a thriller called The Cabin in the Woods. Probably won't be a nice, relaxing weekend in the country.

What we do know is that the film marks something of a milestone for MGM. One of the original major studios,

Today MTV checked in with the writer-director-producer about a bunch of projects that have been in development, including Goners and a new film entitled Cabin In The Woods. Good luck trying to break through his cryptic speak, only time will tell just how horror (if at all) Woods is. Joss Whedon revealed to MTV this evening that his is currently working on a new project with Buffy alum and Cloverfield scribe Drew Goddard entitled Cabin In The Woods.

Whedon Talks Goners, Cabin in the Woods

8 July 2008 12:37 AM, PDT | From DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news

Joss Whedon is working on so many thing right now, it’s hard to believe he’s actually got time to sit down and be interviewed. But interviewed he was, by MTV most recently, to whom he gave an across-the-board status update on many of his projects.

First and foremost, Goners, the horror/fantasy he’s been talking about for years now, it officially on the Universal “back burner”. Why? God only knows, but Joss told the MTV folks he still sees it being made someday, just not right now. Damnit!

He is, however, working on another project with Cloverfield writer and “Buffy” alumn Drew Goddard called Cabin in the Woods. It’s a project Goddard says has a ”harder and darker edge, but it’s also got classic Whedon qualities. It’ll rip your heart out and be heartfelt at the same time.” Nothing was officially said about what the film is about,

While on the red carpet for the Saturn Awards, website Collider chatted a bit with Cloverfield director Matt Reeves who talked a bit about the possibilities of a sequel, which J.J. Abrams recently implied he might not even want to make. Reeves does confirm that the sequel to the smash-hit giant monster movie is on hold and that resurrecting the beast ultimately it depends on if they find a good idea to make it worthwhile. Fingers crossed as we were big fans of Paramount's film here at B-d. Click here for the full interview, which is quite lengthy and reveals a bit more.

The excitement that filled the room when I opened a little envelope and inside was the entire pilot episode for Fox's Fringe, which was written and produced by the legendary J.J. Abrams ("Lost", Cloverfield, "Alias"). The show's trailer just appeared online yesterday and set off my internal hype meter, which was now off the charts. A few of my buddies gathered to watch it and inside you'll find the first ever review of the show, which debuts this fall on Fox. I'm sorry to report... not so good. The show is a television drama centered around a female FBI agent who is forced to work with an institutionalized scientists in order to rationalize a brewing storm of unexplained phenomena.

J.J. Abrams to Pass on 'Cloverfield' Sequel?!

J.J. Abrams, co-producer of the hit monster film Cloverfield, tells Sci Fi Wire that a sequel may or may not happen and revealed that he's more inclined to do something [different] with his Cloverfield partners, writer Drew Goddard and director Matt Reeves, other than a follow-up. "We're talking about it," Abrams said of Cloverfield 2. "But the truth is there's another idea that I'd rather do with the same people than do a sequel. It's a whole new thing." Abrams added, "So my dream is to work with [Goddard and Reeves] again, but do something that's [new]. Having said that, Drew and Matt both, separately, have really good ideas for what [Cloverfield 2] could be. So I don't know. We'll see. I know the studio wants it." Well how much would that Suck?!

Michelle Williams' best pal Busy Philipps is pregnant with her first child.

The 29-year-old actress and her writer husband Marc Silverstein are expecting their new arrival this summer and Philipps is loving every minute of her pregnancy.

She tells Usmagazine.com, "We found out today it's a little girl! I feel great! I've had, like, no morning sickness!"

But Philipps has ruled out her former Dawson's Creek co-star and mother-of-one as her unborn baby's godmother, and has instead chosen Cloverfield actress Lizzy Caplan for the honour.

She explains, "She (Williams) has her hands full with being a mother right now...

"The cool thing about giving someone the godmother title is that it's sort of practice for their own baby."

'Spartans' Has the Edge Over 'Rambo'

29 January 2008 | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

When final box-office figures were counted up, only about $300,000 separated the take of the No. 1 film, Meet the Spartans, from the No. 2 film, Rambo, according to box-office trackers Media by Numbers. Spartans took in $18.5 million over the weekend, compared to Rambo's $18.2 million. Both films performed according to expectations, but several box-office gurus had predicted that Rambo would edge out Spartans, instead of the other way around. The Romantic comedy 27 Dresses held up well in its second week, to place third with $13.4 million, but last week's top hit, Cloverfield, suffered a monstrous setback, dropping more than 70 percent to $12.7 million. A third new release, the horror-thriller Untraceable, placed fifth with $11.3 million.

Rambo Meets the Spartans, Loses

28 January 2008 | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The low-budget Meet the Spartans, a spoof of last year's 300 from Warner Bros., earned as much as it cost to produce at the domestic box office over the weekend, taking in an estimated $18.7 million and edging out Rambo, from Lionsgate and the Weinstein Co., which finished in second place with about $18.2 million, according to box-office trackers Media by Numbers. The two films knocked last week's winner, Cloverfield to fourth place. After grossing $44.3 million over the four-day Martin Luther King Day holiday, Cloverfield garnered just $12.7 million in its second weekend, a 72-percent drop. It was beaten by the film it trounced a week ago, 20th Century Fox's 27 Dresses. Debuting in fifth place was Sony's Untraceable, which took in a better-than-expected $11.2 million. Continuing to amaze was Fox Searchlight's Juno, which passed the $100-million mark an upped its gross from last week despite losing some 100 theaters. The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Media by Numbers: 1. Meet the Spartans, $18.7 million; 2. Rambo, $18.2 million; 3. 27 Dresses, $13.6 million; 4. Cloverfield, $12.7 million; 5. Untraceable, $11.2 million; 6. Juno, $10.3 million; 7. The Bucket List, $10.2 million; 8. There Will be Blood, $4.9 million; 9. National Treasure:Book of Secrets, $4.7 million; 10. Mad Money, $4.6 million.

Rambo, Charging Back Into Theaters, Faces Monster

25 January 2008 | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

This weekend will provide a box-office test of whether the public will turn out to see a 61-year-old former action star in a role that he first made popular as a much younger man. Sylvester Stallone first introduced the character of John Rambo in 1982 in the movie First Blood. He last appeared as the character in 1988, helping rebels in Afghanistan oust the Soviet Union. (In the interim most of those rebels turned against the U.S.) "Hopefully, what our advertising has done is introduce Rambo to a whole new generation of younger males," Lionsgate distribution chief Steve Rothenberg told today's (Friday) Los Angeles Times. The question among box-office analysts was whether it could top Cloverfield, which had a spectacular opening last weekend. While Rambo is expected to take in $15-20 million, that figure would merely come close to equaling what Cloverfield would bring in if its ticket sales fell by 50 percent. It's also being challenged by the debuting comedy Meet the Spartans, a spoof of last year's 300, which has also been garnering considerable buzz in recent weeks. (Spartans was not screened for critics.)

23 January 2008 | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The box office posted solid results on Monday, the Martin Luther King Day holiday, with the top 12 movies recording $27 million in ticket sales, according to final figures released Tuesday by Media by Numbers. Paramount's Cloverfield led the pack with a gross of $6.09 million. It also set a record for the four-day holiday with a total of $46.1 million. Paramount says that the total budget for Cloverfield was just $25 million, although it was assumed that the studio spent far more than that to promote it.
