11/17 ~ Todays special boys and girls. Are you one of them?
Mischa, Marty and Rachel
1897 Frank Fay, aka Mr. Barbara Stanwyck. The theory goes that their troubled marriage was the basis of A Star is Born. That story is so big it's practically it's own franchise. I can't stop thinking about it today: Stanwyck through the lens of Gaynor, Garland, Streisand. Yummy!) Even if it's only an urban La legend, I love to think about it. Fay, a popular comedic actor, was also the originator of the Harvey role (on stage) before Jimmy Stewart got to it.
1901 Lee Strasberg, the hugely influential acting teacher that helped popularize "The Method" Students included... well, basically a whose who of late 40s / early 50s giants of the silver screen.
1905 Mischa Auer, very tall actor of oversized comic turns. You'll remember him from the blissfully funny My Man Godfrey and best picture winner You Can't Take It With You »

Let's start with a few images: A psycho jive artist dancing around as he cuts a man's ear off. A retired bullfighter slumped in front of a television set, masturbating furiously to slasher movies. Scenes like those, from Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs" and Pedro Almodóvar's "Matador," pretty much secured the bad-boy reputations of their creators. Tarantino came to be regarded as a hyped-up pop culture junkie spritzing bloodshed and movie references in equal measure. And Almodóvar was thought of as something like the post-Franco John Waters, mixing '50s Hollywood-style melodrama with cheerful hedonism awash in sex and drugs.
But at this year's New York Film Festival, it was Almodóvar's latest, "Broken Embraces," that was chosen for the stately closing night slot. And about a month or so before the festival, Tarantino's latest film, the epic World War II adventure "Inglourious Basterds," became the unlikeliest hit of the year. »

Kurt Russell has reportedly branded Kate Hudson's boyfriend Alex Rodriguez a "terrific kid". The Death Proof star was spotted cheering on the sidelines as Rodriguez and the Yankees won the World Series last week in New York. "I'm so happy for him. He's a terrific kid," Ok quotes him as saying. "He's worked incredibly hard for a long, long time and now, all questions (more) »

Moviemaker Abel Ferrara has quit Wesley Snipes' new action film to concentrate on Forest Whitaker and 50 Cent's new movie Jekyll & Hyde.
Ferrara was due to direct Snipes and Death Proof star Zoe Bell in Game of Death, but, according to MovieHole.net, he has been replaced by Giorgio Serafini.
In the film, Snipes and Bell team up to defend an injured diplomat who is hospitalised after an assassination attempt.
It's currently shooting in Detroit, Michigan. »

An accomplished stunt performer whose journey to Kill Bill was chronicled as the subject of the excellent documentary Double Dare, Zoe Bell has become a fixture in genre fare not only for her impressive stunt skills - but also her acting chops.
After a leading role in the Grindhouse installment Death Proof, Bell's recent work includes Bitch Slap (screening at our Trinity Of Terrors this weekend), a starring turn in Angel Of Death, and the most recent Tarantino effort Inglourious Basterds. Jason Anders recently sat down with bell for a discussion about her craft.
Ja: Let's start off with talking about the film Death Proof, and your initial reaction to the script by Quentin Tarantino which had you playing yourself. You originally thought this was a joke, right? Zb: Well no, I didn't think the movie was a joke. He was on his way over to my house with the script, »

Those who had the dedication to sit through nearly 4 hours of film in the theater when Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse hit cinemas worldwide are tough. Not for the four-hour film stint, but because they managed to sit through Death Proof without tearing out their eyes.
Thankfully, we all had a selection of great, fake trailers in between the films to keep us entertained. Trailers directed by names like Eli Roth, Rob Zombie, and Edgar Wright, which are all still rumored to be in the works as real films. We all know that Rodriguez’s Machete is being planned, and almost ready to start.
After seeing those trailers, it was only a matter of time before the YouTube generation got their hands on some fun footage, and made it look like a Grindhouse film. What better film than something as depressing and cheap-looking as Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler. »

It’s a slow week for movie releases, with Fantastic Mr. Fox the only release of note in the UK, along with Cirque Du Freak. Most of the remaining big films this year are due out in November and December.
So, with the big winter films already hyped to the max, and with Iron Man 2, Clash of the Titans and Robin Hood being the highly anticipated movies this Spring, I thought i’d take a look at some Spring movies that maybe aren’t getting the attention they deserve – The Losers, Green Zone, A Couple of Dicks, Machete and Kick-Ass. Note, this is a list of the films i’m personally looking forward to, so you won’t necessarily agree with me…
When is it? – 9th April.
Where is it? – Currently filming in Puerto Rico
Who is it? – Directed by Sylvain White, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chris Evans, »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

In the Robert Rodriguez-scripted/directed first of its two conjoined movies, Grindhouse is the ultimate sugar rush for horror fans, a high-calorie, low-nutrition blast of cheap thrills wrought on a big budget. In the second, Quentin Tarantino upends the framework and traditions of exploitation fare to craft a film that’s just as much a showcase for his gift of (writing) gab as it is for action. And in both Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof, a love and respect shines through for the B-movie tradition that too many others “homage” with snarky irony. The wholeheartedness with which they express their devotion to the form almost amounts to a kind of innocence, and for all the explicit mayhem on screen, »

When you think about movie parodies -- we could be talking Airplane!, the Austin Powers films, or one of those great old Mad magazine satires, which were really the first place that a lot of us, as kids, got to "see" movies made for adults -- the key to a terrific send-up would seem to be the art of exaggeration, pure and simple. But there’s a particular brand of cinematic parody that I love, at this point, almost more than any other. And though it does employ the art of exaggeration (in very, very deadpan ways), far more than that, »

Black Dynamite totally captures the .70s style in a knowing spoof and irreverent homage to the Blaxploitation genre. It.s better than I.m Gonna Git You Sucka and more fun than Tarantino.s tedious later efforts like Death Proof and Inglourious Basterds (WWII I know, but he.s always .70s style.)
Review: Black Dynamite
The use of zooms alone defines Black Dynamite.s style, but they have more .70s tricks too. Their use is strategic and skillful, not just wild camera because nobody cares. They care, a lot. They play with split screens, phone voiceover, even theme songs in a self-knowing wink, but it never becomes smarmy or superior.
It.s got a sort of Walk Hard tone of performance, which won.t do the marketing department any favors but it.s a high watermark for satire. Characters announce their ages and speak morals and ultimatums with melodramatic sincerity. »

The folks at MakingOf.com passed along this really cool interview with actress Aubrey Plaza who plays Julie Powers in the upcoming film “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” by director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Them) and starring Michael Cera (Superbad, Juno), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Death Proof) and Anna Kendrick (Twilight). Synopsis: Everything is totally sweet. Scott Pilgrim’s life is so awesome. He’s 23 years old, in a rock band, “between jobs,” and dating a cute high school girl. Everything’s fantastic until a seriously mind-blowing, dangerously fashionable, roller blading delivery girl named Ramona Flowers starts cruising through his dreams and sailing by him at parties. You know how you feel when you look at one of those blogs with all of the cute and fuzzy kitten pictures? Twitter-Wood's sort of like that today with good news following Elizabeth Taylor's heart surgery, Emmy Rossum with cotton candy, Paris Hilton with a monkey, and Arnold Schwarzenegger's happy breakfast picture.
All of those pics come in addition to an announcement by Jason Reitman that "Ghostbusters" fans should not want him to direct "Ghostbusters 3," as well as an on-set shot of Rainn Wilson with the band Frightened Rabbit, who recently got a tour of the office used in "The Office." Click on down to check out those posts and more. I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter-Wood report for October 9, 2009.

After the success of Inglourious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino's failure with Death Proof has long since been forgotten and once again he's in high demand. What will his next project be? A Basterds prequel, perhaps? Maybe so, he has at least hinted several times at returning to the universe he created with the film, but then again Tarantino hints at a lot of stuff, promises a lot of things, and rarely keeps those promises (not counting the obvious deviation from the norm, Inglourious Basterds itself). So what is he up to? Last week he was on about a third Kill Bill film, but that isn't for a couple of years, so he's got to find something to fill in the void between now and then. What might fill that void will be hard to determine, but a hint as to what the subject matter might be has been given. While »

Wesley Snipes will join Bad Lieutenant director Abel Ferrara for Game of Death, a film which likely has nothing at all to do with the Bruce Lee film of the same name.
Snipes, who seemed to be at a high a few years ago with a starring role in Blade Trinity, was last seen in the direct to video Art of War II: Betrayal. His career has been rocked by a three-year prison sentence for tax evasion, and he needs a film to get him back on track. Since the details regarding Game of Death’s plot are sparse, it’s hard to tell if this is the one that’ll do the trick. Snipes will simply play “a politician’s bodyguard who must fend off five of the world’s top assassins.”
Snipes and Ferrara previously worked together on King of New York in 1990. Game of Death will co-star »

Top Ten Working American Directors
A list like this is tricky to the point of madness. However, I'm going to save you the trouble by saying it right here, right now: Most of the choices on this list are obvious. There's a reason why certain names continually pop up whenever conversation drifts toward great American films. So there. I said it.
Yet, how do you weigh the likes of Francis Ford Coppola, a genius who delivered some of the all-time greatest films, but fizzled out 25 or so years ago, against a filmmaker like Woody Allen who has worked consistently for decades churning out both brilliant gems and disposable time wasters? How do you compare either of these directors against an auteur such as Spike Jonze who has only opened two films so far, but both are masterpieces?
In the end I just went with my gut. I knew there were »

Elizabeth Taylor actually broke some news about herself on Twitter this afternoon, as it appears the Hollywood legend and Twitter-Wood citizen is having an operation performed on her heart. Rose McGowan was among the first to send good vibes out to her, and I definitely echo those sentiments, as her performance in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" is among my all-time favorites.
In less dangerous news, Kim Kardashian added her name to Twitter-Wood's list of Halloween costume commitments for the year, announcing that she'll be going to at least one event as Jasmine from "Aladdin." Check out all the details, along with Shaq's take on Brett Favre, Richard Kelly's plea for help understanding "A Serious Man" and Peter Facinelli's behind-the-scenes shot from "Nurse Jackie." They're all in the Twitter-Wood report for October 6, 2009.

To celebrate the upcoming Doha Tribeca Film Festival, we wanted to share some of our favorite film-world interviews from Doha Executive Director Amanda Palmer's excellent The Fabulous Picture Show. In this episode, they catch up with the incredible New Zealander Zoe Bell. Bell started as a stuntwoman for the Lucy Lawless show Xena: Warrior Princess, and caught the eye of Quentin Tarantino, with whom she worked on Kill Bill. Watch for exclusive behind-the-scenes content from Tarantino's flick Death Proof, where Bell used both her acting muscles and her stunt skills, clinging to the top of a car in a scary chase scene. Tarantino himself even weighs in on why Bell is so cool. And if you can't get enough of the Kate Hudson-ish Kiwi, then get out to the theaters and see Whip It, where she's a roller derby hero. Directed by: Drew Barrymore
Cast: Ellen Page, Kristen Wiig, Alia Shawkat, Marcia Gay Harden, Daniel Stern
Running Time: 1 hr 51 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: October 2, 2009
Plot: Bliss (Page) wants more out of her small town life than the beauty pageants her mother pushes her toward. Bliss jumps at her chance to join the roller derby team, but then must live a double life so her parents don’t find out.
Who’S It For? Ladies who are sick of men getting all the roles in sports movies. Anyone who believes Page could be one of the best young actors working today.
Expectations: I like everyone involved in this film and I can harken back to a time when I used to watch roller derby on the USA network (I think) when I was a wee lad. It’s a great topic for the flick, so I was pumped. »
