Best News You’ll Hear Today: Old Boy Remake Canned

5 hours ago | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Having recently revisited Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy, I’ve come to the conclusion that that film has a little slice of everything. It has incredibly light humor followed by the darkest of gallows humor,  and then proceeds to toss any funny business aside to strike at some of the darkest themes I’ve ever seen in a film. It’s one of those movies that could only be satisfactorily completed in another country with values and tolerance levels significantly different from our own.

Which is why the idea that Steven Spielberg would be teaming with Will Smith to deliver a remake of the film was a horrible one indeed. There’s no way they could possibly create something as powerful as the original. It just wasn’t feasible in Hollywood.

The great news is that Latino Review is reporting the remake dead in the water, as Spielberg and Smith have jumped ship. »

Will Smith Starring In Flowers For Algernon?

9 November 2009 9:54 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It seems Will Smith hasn.t seen Tropic Thunder. It.s too late for him now, because he.s signed on to star in a new version of Flowers for Algernon according to Pajiba. They say he.ll both produce and star in the film, and if he.s starring that must mean he.ll be playing the mentally challenged Charlie. In the original Hugo Award winning short story, Charlie Gordon is the first human test subject for a surgery which triples his 68 Iq. Unfortunately he soon becomes so smart that he can no longer relate to the people around him and when, as it must, his Iq returns to normal levels he.s left only with the painful awareness that everyone around him feels sorry for him. Oh the irony! The story has been a movie several times before but it.s never been the star-studded, big-budget affair that »

Will Smith Buying Flowers for Algernon?

9 November 2009 9:42 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

It wouldn't be Monday without a rumor or two. We kick off today's spinning of the rumor-mill with a story from the folks at Pajiba, who seem to be more than on top of Hollywood lately. According to their "inside source," multi-hyphenate Will Smith is developing an adaptation of the classic Daniel Keyes story Flowers for Algernon, in which he will star as well as produce. For those who missed the fifth grade, Algernon follows the story of Charlie, a mentally handicapped man who is the first human test subject in an experimental surgery that artificially increases intelligence. After seeing his Iq go from 68 to 185 following the surgery, Charlie loses the ability to socialize normally and becomes alienated from those around him. As Charlie begins to learn the truth behind the effects of the surgery -- as seen through the reaction of a mouse test subject named Algernon -- he is struck with the weight of how »

Martin & Baldwin To Host Oscars (Find Out Who Almost Did!)

4 November 2009 10:57 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Last week we reported on the fact that the all-singing, all-dancing host of the 2009 Oscars, Hugh Jackman had turned down the opportunity to return in 2010 because he didn’t want to host two years in a row. At the same time, there was a rumor flying around that Neil Patrick Harris was going to be picking up the reigns, after doing such a great job at the Emmys in September. Although not my first choice for an Oscar host (I still maintain George Clooney is the perfect choice), Nph would have been a fine runner-up, Imo.

However, as happens a lot with these pesky little things we call rumors, Nph hasn’t gotten the gig. So who has? Well, I’m glad you asked – none other than Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. That’s right, the Academy has decided to double-up this year and bring on a comedic acting duo. »

The Good, The Bad And The Wtf: Sands of Not My Freakin' Dime

4 November 2009 1:09 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

It's the mid-week report of the good, bad and you-know-what-the-what here, as we compile the movie news from the past week and a half. Yes, you'll have more at the end of the week—but for now, let us all cringe together as we see stomach news of the 2012 motion sickness experience, an Mib without Will Smith, and the audacity of some people to shoot a barely visible topless scene and hype it up like it was Basic Instinct 3.

The Good

• For years, there have been several attempts to do a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, none of them ever came close to moving ahead. Speaking to MTV last week, director Robert Zemeckis set the record straight: that this time he is personally involved and really excited to do the sequel, and that he has commissioned original scribes Jeffrey Price and Peter Seaman to write the screenplay. 'Iron Man 2': The War Machine Team-Up Addressed

3 November 2009 9:10 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

More details on the War Machine of "Iron Man 2" have been spilled. Dropping by MTV recently, Sam Rockwell who will be seen as Justin Hammer in the "Iron Man" sequel gave an interesting scoop on the relationship between his Tony Stark's rival character and Don Cheadle's Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes.

Of the two characters' alliance, the 40-year-old actor said, "Don and I, we're working together. He works with me in spite of some of my personality flaws." Calling Hammer "a bit of a shark" in explaining the "personality flaws" remark, he then detailed that "Don's character, Rhodey, needs to work with me. He has no choice. So we team up and we build this fabulous War Machine."

Asked further whether his character might take advantage of the opportunity to try the War Machine armor on, the actor who voiced Darwin in "G-Force" stated that he has no chance to do so. »

Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin Team-Up to Host the 82nd Academy Awards

3 November 2009 4:35 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Apparently it takes two hosts to rival Hugh Jackman’s performance from last year’s Oscar ceremony.  Jackman said he wasn’t interested in hosting two years straight and the “Tropic Thunder” duo of Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. also turned down the offer, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin have stepped up and will attempt to make the four-hour ceremony bearable for those watching at home.

While last year’s Oscars were surprisingly good under Bill Condon’s (”Dreamgirls”) direction, I have far less faith in Adam Shankman (”Bedtime Stories”) to come anywhere close to the bar Condon set.  I think given the right material, Baldwin and Martin have the comic talent to help usher along the night.  However, Baldwin’s unrivaled work on “30 Rock” is half-due to the show’s amazing writing staff and as for Martin, well…he not only starred in the “Pink Panther” remakes, he wrote them. »

Robert Downey Jr and Ben Stiller turn down Oscar presenting gig

3 November 2009 11:52 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

The word on the street at the moment is that both Robert Downey Jr. and funnyman Ben Stiller recently turned down the chance of hosting next year's Academy Awards. According to Nikki Finke, the two passed on the thankless task of doing the gig after being offered it by producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman.

Hugh Jackman has also turned down the job (after doing an amazing one last year), so who will host the Oscars 2010? We'll keep you posted.

Downey Jr and Stiller starred opposite each other in last year's Tropic Thunder.

Brought to you by: Candy and Whiskey-flavored Vomit - If you did Halloween correctly, you know what I'm talking about. This week, on a very special episode of Reject Radio, with my interest in horror films waning, we call upon the epic triumvirate of Peter Sciretta from a tiny horror film blog called /film and film producer Aaron Morgan to discuss the finer things in life. Filet Mignon. Fancy hairdos. Anarchy. Despite Aaron's constant need to explore the visual limits of radio and Peter's constant need to derail discussions that don't deal with Pump Up the Volume, we manage to review This Is It and Gentlemen Broncos. Back in Black?

1 November 2009 5:00 PM, PST | Getback - Movies | See recent Getback - Movies news »

It was announced last week that "Men in Black 3" has been green lit by Columbia Pictures. Reportedly Barry Sonnenfeld, director of the first two "Mib" films will be at the helm once again, and Etan Cohen, who wrote "Tropic Thunder," is already working on the script. The big grey area...and this is a Big grey area...is if Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will be back in "Black." Clearly, without them, the show can't go on. But to us, there in only one burning question. Will Frank the pug suit up again? Wouldn't be the same without him. »

Columbia Pictures is Ready For "Men in Black 3"

30 October 2009 8:35 PM, PDT | Reel Empire | See recent Reel Empire news »

Man, it seems like ages since the "Men in Black" films were top grossing hits and it really has been years since "Men in Black II" hit theaters. While there's been talk over the years of reviving the franchise, no progress was ever made...until now. According to reports, Columbia Pictures has set "Tropic Thunder" scribe, Ethan Cohen, to write the third installment in the series. At the moment, there are no deals in place for the franchise's stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, however, the film won't likely go forward without the duo's involvement. After all, it wouldn't be "Men in Black" without the original 'men in black'. No production date is known at this time either, but we'll keep you posted.

Writer Found For ‘Men In Black 3′

30 October 2009 4:45 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Back in April we reported on news from the Sony ShoWest presentation that the studio was developing a script for a third Men in Black movie, something which built on the rumors from over a year ago that franchise stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones were interested in suiting up for some alien escapades once more. Fast forward to now and an update has come out that Men In Black 3 has found its writer in the form of Tropic Thunder screenwriter, Etan Cohen (not to be confused with one half of the famous Coen brothers, Ethan).

Variety is reporting that Columbia Pictures (which Sony owns) has tapped Cohen to pen the script, but beyond that no deals have been made for either Smith or Jones to reprise their roles. Although I’d be very surprised if the studio didn’t have talks going on with the two stars »

Another ‘Men In Black’ Movie On the Way

30 October 2009 12:15 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

If you were one of the people clamoring for more of the Men in Black franchise after the second installment ended, then this article is for you. Why? Well, it seems the studio responsible for the Men in Black movies is also interested in more of them and so, has decided to make at least one more.

The studio has enlisted Tropic Thunder writer Etan Cohen to pen the script for Men in Black 3 but that’s about as far as things have gone. No deals for franchise stars Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones are in place as yet though, according to the trade, its unlikely that the film would move forward without them.

Sorry to all you Mib fans out there but to me this seems like a longshot. The studio may have a chance at getting Tommy Lee Jones to reprise his role, although I think that »

Men in Black 3 Gets the Other Tropic Thunder Writer

30 October 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

As we've previously discussed, Justin Theroux's career has taken [1] off [2] after writing Tropic Thunder, and the film's other screenwriter Etan Cohen also seems to be similarly in demand. We heard earlier this year that Men in Black 3 was definitely in development [3], but now according to Variety [4], Columbia Pictures have taken the first step toward making it a reality by hiring Cohen to pen the script. Etan Cohen is a former Mike Judge collaborator, having written for Beavis & Butthead and King of the Hill, in addition to co-writing the screenplay for Judge's Idiocracy. He was also working on the currently shelved Will Ferrell/Sacha Baron Cohen Sherlock Holmes comedy, and the upcoming Candy Land board game movie. So, is this a good thing? And will Cohen be able to come up with a script that is strong enough to convince Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones to sign on for Mib 3? Let's hope so, »

'Men in Black 3' Nabs a Writer and Director

30 October 2009 7:48 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

No super-successful comedy series can stay away for long. Back in April, ShoWest brought news that the aliens were coming back for Men in Black 3. There was no word on which stars would return, or anything other than the faintest murmurings of a plan, but now things are coming together. THR's Risky Biz Blog reports that Etan Cohen, the scribe behind Tropic Thunder, will pen the script while director of the first two, Barry Sonnenfeld, returns for the third bout.

With a script and director slotted into place, naturally, the next question revolves around Will Smith. As of now, the actor has no solid plans to return, but buzz says he is interested. As for Tommy Lee Jones -- his involvement is "uncertain." Smith has nothing pressing right now, so he's wide open (save from helping along his son's blossoming career), and Jones has only got two in-development features in his future. »
