The Marley film will be released to coincide with what would have been the reggae icon's 65th birthday in February, 2010.

Still Rolling: 40 Years of the Rolling Stones on Film - "Gimme Shelter"

10 April 2008 8:25 AM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

By Matt Singer

In honor of their 40 years on movie screens, from 1968's "Sympathy for the Devil" to last week's release of "Shine a Light," we're taking a look at The Rolling Stones' filmography, featuring enough collaborations with great directors to make any actor jealous and enough abandoned or aborted projects to give any movie investor heartburn.

Gimme Shelter (1970)

Directed by Albert Maysles, David Maysles, and Charlotte Zwerin

The Film: The Rolling Stones watch the events of their recent American tour as they play out before them on a flatbed editing machine. Though their return to the States was filled with plenty of highlights, including a triumphant series of concerts at Madison Square Garden and a successful recording session at Muscle Shoals Studios, all that really seems to matter is the disastrous result of their free concert held outside of San Francisco at the Altamont Speedway. Jagger Not Happy With Scorsese's Close-ups

6 April 2008 6:15 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Mick Jagger was far from pleased with director Martin Scorsese's close-ups on The Rolling Stones' Shine A Light concert movie - because he found it boring to watch himself on the big screen.

The rocker is largely thrilled with the new movie, but can't help thinking Scorsese overdid things with certain lingering footage.

He says, "It was a little bit too much, I felt. But directors always like to use slow numbers (songs) to have these lingering shots.

"I didn't care for it too much. Boring. It didn't look very good."

Richards Gave Buddy His Favourite Guitar

6 April 2008 8:03 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Keith Richards gave away one of his favourite guitars during the filming of new Rolling Stones rockumentary Shine A Light - as a mark of respect to Buddy Guy.

The guitar great joined the Stones onstage at New York's Beacon Theatre to perform Muddy Waters' Champagne + Reefer for the Martin Scorsese-directed concert film.

And always cool Richards was so taken by the magical moment, he handed over his guitar.

He says, "It's one of my favourites, too.

"That was straight off the top of my head: 'It's yours, baby.'

"With everything going on that night, with this movie, I thought, 'This is my respect to Buddy and to Muddy and all the other guys who turned me on.'"

Scorsese Missed Out On Filming Richards Arrest

3 April 2008 7:00 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Director Martin Scorsese was left disappointed he didn't manage to film police arresting Rolling Stones star Keith Richards for the Dvd edition of his new rockumentary Shine A Light.

Scorsese was flying to Los Angeles from the Berlin Film Festival in Germany, where the concert movie premiered in February, and agreed to drop the guitarist off en route in Newark, New Jersey.

Police met the rocker at the airport, where Richards claims he was arrested over a passport mix up - and Scorsese was left watching the saga without being able to film the Brown Sugar legend's exchange with airport cops.

Richards says, "I got collared by the cops and dragged off. Something about the numbers in my passport, but I think it had to do with supervisors wanting to meet me.

"Martin saw me physically being arrested. He's sorry he didn't get that scene."

Ronnie Wood 'Invades' Beatles Convention

3 April 2008 12:24 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

The Rolling Stones star Ronnie Wood stunned Beatles fans at a Fab Four convention in New York at the weekend (29/30Mar08) - by showing up to support George Harrison's ex-wife Patti Boyd.

Wood was in the Big Apple promoting new Stones rockumentary Shine A Light when pal Boyd alerted him to the 34th annual get together, dubbed The Fest, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

The rocker decided it would be fun to show up with the former model to show once and for all the Stones' fabled rivalry with The Beatles throughout the 1960s was just a myth.

The ruse started when Wood, who joined the Stones in 1975, invited Boyd to join him and some pals on a night out in New York last Friday - the first Mrs. Harrison declined, but invited Wood to join her at the convention instead.

Convention host Martin Lewis says, "Ronnie saw the humour of the situation... and arrived by stretch limo at the hotel."

Even though it was nearly 2am, the hotel lobby and corridors were still jammed with hordes of Beatles fans participating in informal singalongs of Fab Four tunes.

Lewis adds, "The fans were shocked and stunned as I ushered Ronnie through the crowd to the gallery in the hotel, where Boyd was displaying her exhibit of historic photographs and original '60s mod outfits."

Wood chatted with some of the delighted fans, who launched into an impromptu version of I Wanna Be Your Man, the 1963 John Lennon and Paul McCartney tune that gave the Stones their first hit.

Lewis concludes, "Ronnie was in great form... He found the whole situation of sneaking into a Beatles convention hilarious."

Stones Defy Scorsese To Give Documentary Imax Treatment

1 April 2008 9:06 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

The Rolling Stones insisted their documentary Shine A Light be reformatted for large-screen Imax cinemas - against the wishes of director Martin Scorsese.

The legendary director filmed the rockers throughout their 2006 A Bigger Bang world tour and aimed to make a "small intimate movie", according to the band's frontman Sir Mick Jagger.

But the Gimme Shelter hitmakers insisted on giving the film the bigger screen treatment to allow it to be released in a record 93 Imax movies theatres internationally - much to the annoyance of Scorsese.

Jagger says, "It'll be very large. After looking at all the options, Marty decided he wanted to make this small intimate movie. And I said the laugh is on Marty in the end, because we'd blown it up on this huge Imax thing... But it looks good on Imax, and we've got both formats, so we're happy with that."

Opening This Week

31 March 2008 8:17 AM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

By Neil Pedley

This week is something of a nostalgia trip with a period comedy, Freddie Prinze Jr. and a concert documentary about a group of men who, by all the laws of man and nature, should not still be alive and walking around.

"The Flight of the Red Balloon"

After being nominated for the Palme d'Or an incredible five times at Cannes, it's no wonder that director Hou Hsiao-hsien has become a Francophile. In his first film outside of Asia, the "Three Times" auteur directs the country's first lady of cinema, Juliette Binoche, in a story about an overburdened mother who receives a much-needed lift from her son's Chinese nanny (Song Fang) as they turn the City of Lights into a magical playground for the 7-year-old Simon . a tribute to Albert Lamorisse's 1956 short. In French with subtitles.

Aguilera Leaves Richards Confused

31 March 2008 6:59 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Keith Richards was left bewildered when Christina Aguilera joined The Rolling Stones to perform a song during their new Martin Scorsese-directed concert film - because he had no idea who she was.

The guitarist looks a little puzzled on film as Aguilera takes the stage for a rendition of Live With Me in new rockumentary Shine A Light, and he freely admits he thought she was a fan invading the stage.

Richards says, "This girl came out and I was like, 'Who is that?' I had no idea.

"I'm still not sure who that is. She can sing, though. And she looked good."

Scorsese Hails Stones As His Life Soundtrack

31 March 2008 5:05 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Director Martin Scorsese jumped at the chance to direct Rolling Stones documentary Shine A Light, because the band's music acted as a soundtrack to his life.

The 65-year-old moviemaker admits the rockers' songs helped him through difficult periods in his lifetime, and the group influenced his own work so much he immediately signed up to work on the concert documentary.

He tells the New York Daily News, "At different times in my life, the Rolling Stones' music dealt with different aspects of my life that I was trying to make sense of.

"Their music has stayed with me and been a very important part of my life over the years."

Shine A Light, which had its New York premiere on Sunday, originally debuted at the Berlin Film Festival in Germany in February.

Stones Asked Scorsese To Film Rio Show

30 March 2008 3:52 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

The Rolling Stones attempted to persuade moviemaker Martin Scorsese to film their historic 2006 free concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - but he wasn't interested.

The director was the man behind the camera for the Stones' new concert film Shine A Light, but he had no desire to shoot the group performing for almost a million people on Copacabana Beach.

Frontman Mick Jagger recalls, "I asked Martin if he'd like to shoot that concert, because I thought that concert was going to look amazing.

"He came in and we pitched him the idea and he didn't like it. He said, 'My real talent is to do intimacy.'"

Stones Planning 23RD Album

28 March 2008 9:12 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

The Rolling Stones are planning to head back to the studio later this year to begin recording their 23rd studio album.

The energetic sixtysomething rockers recently ended their two-year A Bigger Bang world tour - in support of 2005's album of the same name - and are currently promoting Martin Scorsese's movie documentary about them, Shine A Light.

But as soon as they get a break, Sir Mick Jagger and Keith Richards will sit down and write new tracks.

Guitarist Richards reveals, "I think we might make another album. Once we get over doing promotion on this film."

And he insists the fact they have been rocking non-stop for more than 40 years, and are all aged between 60 and 66, isn't enough to stop them in their tracks.

Crediting their unusual lifestyle for their longevity, he adds, "We love what we do, simple as that. We were the whipping hounds, you know, but that's calmed down. Now we're the wrinkled rockers, right? But I still have the energy. I put that down to not eating a lot. And drinking a lot. Not eating a lot, and good weed. Honestly I'd do this job even if I were in a wheelchair."

Drummer Charlie Watts is particularly keen to keep working, claiming he gets ill whenever he stops: "I think we should carry on. It seems that whenever we stop I get ill. The last time we had a break I got throat cancer. I do all my exercises, I don't smoke, and I don't drink, yet I'm the one in the band that got it."

Watts Hates Nostalgic Stones' Clips

27 March 2008 5:20 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

The Rolling Stones rocker Charlie Watts considered storming out of the premiere for the band's documentary Shine A Light - because he hates watching footage of his youth.

The Martin Scorsese-directed movie premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in Germany last month and all four Stones attended the screening.

But 66-year-old Watts despises Shine A Light's nostalgic clips from the rockers' 1960s heyday.

However, the drummer insists he still enjoyed the film.

Watts says, "He (Scorsese) uses a bit of flashback which I don't really like much, 'cos I don't like seeing myself 40 years ago saying something stupid.

"To look at, it's great. Mick (Jagger) looks fantastic."

He adds, "You can't get up and leave 'cos everyone's looking at you. So we had to sit through it, but actually about five minutes from the end I thought, 'Ok, that's enough.'"

18 March 2008 12:05 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Rolling Stones rocker Sir Mick Jagger wants to duet with R+B queen Mary J. Blige.

The singing legend has performed with current chart-toppers Christina Aguilera and Amy Winehouse over the last year, and he reveals Blige is next on his list.

He tells Maxim, "I love Mary J. Blige. I know she's done duets with U2 and everyone else, and I love her vocal style. She's on my musical wish list."

Jagger adds that he was blown away by Aguilera, who he sang Live With Me with for Martin Scorsese's Rolling Stones movie Shine A Light.

He says, "Christina Aguilere is such a great singer, so I loved that. She was really on it. She delivers."
