The Men Who Stare at Goats Directed by Grant Heslov According to Jon Ronson's book The Men Who Stare At Goats, the U.S. government has experimented with various extra-sensory ‘abilities,’ such as remote-viewing and mind control, since the 1950s. These highly classified sub-divisions of the Army were developed in the hopes of creating a different kind of warrior, one who could harness mental abilities to destroy his adversary. Although many of these divisions were kept under wraps, journalist Ronson (known as Bob Wilton in the film) got wind of a low-profile Army project after having met Jim Channon, the former colonel who wrote a manual for the creation of the ‘First Earth Battalion,’ an army unit to based upon New Age principals. The book, which inspired the film, charts the absurd journey that began with this chance encounter. It contains a wild, often questionable, but ultimately fascinating story of introspection and destiny. »

It looks like that little mega low-budget supernatural horror flick, Paranormal Activity, is working out very well for those involved. On top of director/writer/editor/producer Oren Peli moving on to Area 51, a couple of Pa’s other producers, Jason Blum and Steven Schneider, are “close” to selling a spec script called The Jealous One.
Sometimes those smaller films can work wonders…
Based on the 1985 Celia Fremlin book of the same name, The Jealous One is described as a Hitchcockian thriller about a wife who dreams she murders a woman who might be tempting her husband, only to find that the woman has actually disappeared. Sidney Kimmel Entertainment is close to acquiring the spec script, written by newcomer Carey Malloy.
THR’s Risky Biz Blog reports that along with The Jealous One, Blum and Schneider are busy with other projects as well: Blum produced the upcoming Dwayne Johnson fantasy family comedy, »

No, this is not a joke. Mel Gibson isn't filming another "The Colonel" prank. This is an actual, real movie being shot where Mel Gibson stars as a man who runs around (both literally and figuratively) with a beaver puppet on his hand that he treats like a live animal and his friend. Kind of like Lars and the Real Girl except with a beaver puppet instead of a sex doll. It's called The Beaver and it's being directed by Jodie Foster as well. These photos come from Splash News where they got a few shots of Gibson shooting on set in New York. I didn't realize the beaver would look so goofy, but alas, that's all part of the fun. This looks hilarious. The Beaver is about Walter (Mel Gibson), troubled father and husband and CEO of a stalling toy company [who gives voice to] The Beaver, a glove pupper ... »

15 years after Maverick, Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson are reuniting on The Beaver, a project written by newcomer Kyle Killen that started a bidding war. The script topped the “Black List” last year as one of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood and, after a talent shuffle that included Steve Carell and Jim Carrey, Gibson settled on the lead under the direction of Ms. Foster for Summit Entertainment.
Walter Black (Gibson) is a vacant, perpetually depressed man in his mid-40’s. He’s tried every form of therapy to brighten his mood, including pills, drum circles, self help novels, and hypnosis. His slump has brought the company he oversees to the brink of bankruptcy and cost him his family, who casts him out as a poor influence. A night of liquor, sleeping pills, and “Growing Pains” tumbles until he’s lying on his back after a failed suicide attempt.

Not to sound cliche but it was truly a delight meeting Jane Campion, one of the three women directors to be ever nominated for a Best Director Oscar (the other two were Lina Wertmuller in 1976 for "Seven Beauties" and Sofia Coppola for 2003's "Lost in Translation").
Borrowing from the great romantic poet, John Keats, the subject of the director's "Bright Star," interviewing Campion was a thing of beauty and will definitely be a joy forever.
Campion was smart, provocative, brilliant. She hinted on quitting making movies right after 2003's "In the Cut." That would have been a tragedy.
So thank you to my friends at Palm Springs International Film Society for making these interviews happened. Actor Paul Schneider, who perfected a Scottish accent to play Keats' confidante, Charles Armitage Brown, was also a pleasure to talk to.

It's almost time for an update of the Top 50 Hottest Young Actors list! Before our rundown featuring the actors below, let's have a look at some hitlists from across the web - Moviefone has a 25 under 25 and Fandango a 10 Young Actors to Watch list. ScreenDaily publishes Stars of Tomorrow and there is the annual European Shooting Stars celebrated as part of the Berlinale. The first 2 only consider Hollywood movies and cast, while ScreenDaily is exclusively for UK-based filmmakers and actors. The 'shooting star' programme is, of course, for Europeans.

- - - These hitlists are more than point of references to our own - they are inspiration to keep us on our feet and come up with a listing that consider all angles. I don't think anyone is naïve enough to list down and rank 50 young actors ( and 50 young actresses) and expect everyone to agree and be happy, »

High-necked dresses and corsets characterize many period films, as does a matching, buttoned-up sensibility in terms of sensuality and relationships. But Jane Campion’s 19th- century set Bright Star is a warm, witty film that isn’t shy about demonstrating the love of Romantic poet John Keats (Ben Whishaw, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer) and Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish, Stop-Loss). Though sex is never part of the equation for the pair, a single touch or clasped hand radiates heat and affection.
Though Keats is obviously the more famous of the couple, Bright Star arrives from the perspective of his love. Fanny is a fashion-driven young woman who spends much of her time with her widowed mother (Kerry Fox, Shallow Grave) and her two younger siblings (Love Actually’s Thomas Sangster and delightful newcomer Edie Martin). When she meets John Keats, there is an immediate attraction between them, much to »

You’ve seen Paul Schneider in movies like Lars and the Real Girl and Away We Go, and he’s in Parks & Recreation on NBC, which just had its second season premiere last night. And now he’s starring in Bright Star, Jane Campion’s new movie about the poet John Keats and his romance with Fanny Brawne, which inspired some of his poetry (Schneider plays Keats’ best friend, the Scottish poet Charles Armitage Brown). I talked this week with Schneider about his work -- check it my interview with him at the Alliance of Women Film Journalists. (I’ll review the movie soon.) »

Paul Schneider is one of those actors who regularly spins gold from what could be utterly thankless roles. While he's currently appearing on NBC's Amy Poehler comedy Parks and Recreation, he's carved out a lovely niche on screen as a supporting actor in films like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (where he plays a character that's particularly...randy, providing laughs amongst all the levity), Lars and the Real Girl (where he's Ryan Gosling's brother), and this year's Away We Go. He first drew notice with a starring role and co-writer credit for the romantic indie All the Real Girls (2003), directed by his fellow North Carolina School for the Arts alum David Gordon Green. Over the years, Schneider has continued to develop as an actor and writer, and he made his directing debut with the 2008 Sundance flick Pretty Bird, which he also wrote. ... »

Opening this Friday, in limited release, is the new film from director Jane Campion “Bright Star”. Here’s the full synopsis:
Bright Star, one of the most highly praised films at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, is a portrait of love and loss between the 19th-century Romantic poet John Keats and the 18-year-old muse-next-door, Fanny Brawne. The film’s title comes from a love poem for Brawne, which Keats wrote in the flyleaf of his copy of the works of Shakespeare. Jane Campion’s return to the big »

- A teen vampire franchise can bring in some pocket change and plenty of high fives in the office, but an Oscar nod does more to satisfy the ego. If we go with prior history, a top Black List vote getter about a man and his plastic doll (Lars and the Real Girl) picked up a best original screenplay nom, and The Beaver which topped last year's list and features a man playing with a puppet could replicate the same outcome. According to Variety, Summit is moving in on the world rights to the pic which has Mel Gibson starring for director Jodie Foster. Written by Kyle Killen, Gibson will play a depressed man who finds solace in wearing a beaver hand-puppet. Foster will play the role of the man’s wife. Shooting is currently slated for late September in New York - look for this dark comedy to make »

Jim Carrey has emerged as a leading candidate for the starring role in The Beaver, Kyle Killen's buzz script that topped the Black List.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Steve Carell had previously been loosely attached to play the lead when Jay Roach was talking about directing the pic.
An offbeat dramedy that Anonymous Content is producing, The Beaver centers on the relationship between a man and a beaver puppet he wears on his arm, which he talks to and treats as a companion.
Killen's script has generated enormous interest in development circles, drawing comparisons to Being John Malkovich and Lars and the Real Girl.
Producers are currently seeking a director, with several contenders in the mix, including one novel choice: Jodie Foster, who has had conversations about helming. »

Film critics love to do wacky things when voting for awards, so you shouldn't be too surprised that a member of the National Society of Film Critics nominated Eve — Wall-e's robot galpal — as best actress. That's the category where most mischief lands. In recent years, various wags at the New York Film Critics Circle nominated Bianca, the blow-up sex doll from "Lars and the Real Girl," and Tom Cruise ("Vanilla Sky") as lead actress contenders. Yes, that's right, actress. Photos: Disney, MGM, Paramount »
