Cary Fukunaga to Film Jane Eyre

21 October 2009 6:59 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Cary Fukunaga, the helmer of the reportedly terrific Sin Nombre, has signed on to adapt the classic Charlotte Brontë novel Jane Eyre for the UK Ruby Films.

The script has been written by popular British playwright Moira Buffini, and was one of the best unproduced UK screenplays of last year according to the 2008 Brit List (equivalent to the United States’ Black List of unproduced screenplays).

Buffini’s version of the story is said to emphasize “the gothic elements of the classic 19th century story about a governess who falls in love with her surly employer who has a dark secret.”

I’m unfamiliar with Fukunaga and Sin Nombre, but this trailer indicates that the man has the talent to adapt a story like Jane Eyre with style and reverence. What do you think? Let us know in the comments and keep your eyes on AtomicPopcorn.net for all your movie news! »

Sin Nombre Director Cary Fukunaga to Adapt Jane Eyre

20 October 2009 10:06 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

This is a bit unexpected; there have been a lot of possible next projects in the works for Sin Nombre director Cary Fukunaga. None of them were a new adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's novel Jane Eyre. But the deal to put Fukunaga in the director's chair for a new film version of the oft-adapted novel is reportedly close to finished. And thinking about the idea further, I've realized that it actually may be quite a good fit for the promising new filmmaker. Variety reports that Fukunaga is in advanced talks to direct the film for UK outfit Ruby Films. The script is by Moira Buffini, seemingly the most popular young playwright in England. Her script appeared on the 2008 Brit List, that roster of well-regarded unproduced screenplays in Britain. (Similar to the Black List in Hollywood.) There was news about this project back in 2008 when Ellen Page was on board »

Sense And Sensibility And Sea Monsters (Book Review)

Note: This review also appears on our Starlog site.

Sense And Sensibility And Sea Monsters by Jane Austen and Ben H. Winters (Quirk Classics, tpb, 344 pp, $12.95, out September 15)

This Jane Austen lady just May have a promising future as a genre writer. Her earlier volume, Pride And Prejudice And Zombies (co-written by Seth Grahame-Smith), was a Quirk bestseller and quite a fun read with its gaggle of young British women searching for husbands while battling rampaging zombies and (occasionally) ninjas in Regency England. Actually, I thought that book could have used More zombies. One scene expostulating about local farmers harvesting extra zombies for profit and the inevitable bounty hunters tracking down zombies to earn big bucks might have served as the entire premise of someone else’s book.

However, this volume is a whole other kettle of fish (literally) as it subtracts zombies and ninjas from the Austenian formula, substituting rampaging marine life and (arghhh! »

5 August 2009 2:30 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Just in case you’re not aware, BBC America has other shows besides Doctor Who and Torchwood. Although those two are great, another drama is making some waves across the pond as well and that drama is Robin Hood. Its a fun program with lots of action, solid performances, interesting characters and humor which make it a great way to spend your time — especially if you’re looking for a break from a contemporary setting, sci-fi, time travel or monsters.

Apparently, I’m not the only Robin Hood fan out there because its been given a third season on the network. Here’s all the info from the official press release.

BBC Amerca’s hit revival of Robin Hood returns for a bigger, bolder third season of action-adventure. Toby Stephens (Die Another Day, Jane Eyre) and David Harewood (The Vice, The Palace) join the cast of Jonas Armstrong (Teachers, The Ghost Squad), Richard Armitage (Mi-5, »
