For the many ill-wishers out there, the most disappointing thing about M. Night Shyamalan's environmental thriller "The Happening" wasn't that it was a failure, but that it wasn't a spectacular failure. Critics went in with their long knives out, only to leave shrugging that they've seen worse. Having made $59 million in theaters, it's not even the box office bomb some expected after "Lady in the Water." All in all, "The Happening" is actually pretty successful, considering it's a serious horror film about trees... that kill! In honor of that dubious designation, here's a look at the spotty history of films about murderous botanic life that have preceded it.

Film: Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! (1978)
Directed by John De Bello
M.O.: Produce that, for no apparent reason, become massive and murderous.
De Bello's broad comedy mocked B-movie conventions while bearing its reported $90,000 budget like a badge of honor.

Nobody seemed quite capable of dismissing or faintly praising, then dismissing "My Blueberry Nights" (2007) fast enough when it wandered into American theaters this April . it was as if the collective unconscious had decided to make Wong Kar-wai pay in little cuts for both the demanding ordeal he put us all through with "2046" and for the hubris he subsequently displayed by daring to shoot his next film in the U.S., in English, and casting an inexperienced pop star (Norah Jones) in the lead. Fortunately, the film press one-upmanship has already faded into the disposable past, and the movie remains with us, nothing less than a blessing, a quintessentially Wongian daydream of romantic suspension and sweet lyrical conceits. If you require the Hong Kong context and the Cantonese-with-subtitles with your balladeering Wongness, you're just an import film slummer . "My Blueberry Nights" plays like a trip-around-the-world continuation of "Chungking Express,

This week is something of a nostalgia trip with a period comedy, Freddie Prinze Jr. and a concert documentary about a group of men who, by all the laws of man and nature, should not still be alive and walking around.

After being nominated for the Palme d'Or an incredible five times at Cannes, it's no wonder that director Hou Hsiao-hsien has become a Francophile. In his first film outside of Asia, the "Three Times" auteur directs the country's first lady of cinema, Juliette Binoche, in a story about an overburdened mother who receives a much-needed lift from her son's Chinese nanny (Song Fang) as they turn the City of Lights into a magical playground for the 7-year-old Simon . a tribute to Albert Lamorisse's 1956 short. In French with subtitles.

Norah Jones has been bitten by the acting bug after making her movie debut in My Blueberry Nights - she now wants to star in a zombie film.
Jones insists she won't be quitting her jazz career and moving to Tinseltown just yet, but she'd love to slap on some fake blood for a horror film - and she'd even sing on the soundtrack.
The 29-year-old says, "I'm not out to conquer Hollywood.
"I would act again if it was something appropriate or something that sounded like fun.
"It would be fun to do a zombie movie. I would probably not want to do a song for the zombie soundtrack - but maybe I would."

Norah Jones is planning to take 2008 off - after working herself to the point of exhaustion last year. The singer released a new album, Not Too Late, last January and spent much of the year touring to promote the disc. But she also found the time to squeeze in her acting debut in director Wong Kar Wai's movie My Blueberry Nights - and she admits her heavy work schedule has left her in need of a break. Jones says, "I'm taking some time off. I worked a lot last year, just between the movie and my new record and the tour."

Music star Norah Jones has split from her long-term boyfriend. The singer, 28, had been dating her band's bassist Lee Alexander for several years, but the couple parted ways just before the festive holidays when he moved out of their U.S. home. But the break-up is said to have been amicable, with the couple still remaining "friends," according to the New York Post's gossip column PageSix. Jones is set to make her acting onscreen in My Blueberry Nights.
