'Funny People' Takes The Stage, Tom Hanks Finds His 'Demons' And More, In The DVD Report For Nov. 24

24 November 2009 4:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It's hard to believe, but Judd Apatow, the mega-filmmaker who has changed the face of Hollywood comedy, has only directed three films. Having made his mark in television ("Freaks & Geeks," "Larry Sanders") and some screenwriting, Apatow finally exploded into the theatrical world on the back of 2005's "The 40 Year Old Virgin." "Knocked Up" would follow in 2007, and then in 2009, "Funny People," a decidedly more mature comedy that straddled serious dramatic elements. Now arriving on DVD and Blu-ray, will the pic -- which stars Adam Sandler as a dying comedian who mentors younger upstart Seth Rogen -- finally grab a wider fanbase than it found in cinemas?

"Funny People" features a strong audio and video transfer, and comes in both theatrical and unrated versions. Extras are plentiful as well, with the two-disc edition featuring filmmaker commentary, on-set diaries, gag reels, deleted and extended scenes, featurettes on subjects like stand-up, vintage prank »

Avatar May Debut at Knowles Butt-Numb-a-Thon

24 November 2009 1:37 PM, PST | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

AICN’s Harry Knowles has long cultivated close friendships with powerful filmmakers. Peter Jackson showed him The Lovely Bones before any one else, and now I hear that James Cameron, who often calls Knowles when he wants to promote something, is trying to override studio Twentieth Century Fox’s antipathy toward the Austin-based webmaster (who likes to blast co-chairman Tom Rothman) by giving him Avatar to screen at his annual December 24-hour film marathon Butt-Numb-a-Thon. The Bnat shows classic films as well as such premieres as The Passion of the Christ, Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy and King Kong, Dreamgirls, Chicago, Magnolia, Knocked Up, 300 and … »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Ugly Truth’ is Neither Funny Nor Romantic

23 November 2009 2:02 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Here’s an alleged romantic comedy as clueless about romance as it is about comedy. It has a premise designed to illustrate how women think with their minds, while men think with their nether regions. Yet the male and female leads of “The Ugly Truth” are practically indistinguishable from each other. They’re both overly judgmental, profoundly self-absorbed, and thoroughly reprehensible. Neither of them would dream of dating a member of the opposite sex that didn’t meet their rigid list of superficial expectations based on physical features. These two people are clearly made for each other.

Blu-Ray Rating: 1.5/5.0

Too bad they’re played by Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler, two of the most energetic and generally appealing stars in Hollywood. Their inherent likability directly conflicts with their unlikable characters. Heigl plays a TV producer who has all the warmth of Kate Gosselin, while Butler plays a local cable »

Party Favors: Seeing Red

18 November 2009 1:51 AM, PST | Quick Stop | See recent Quick Stop news »

Chicago - We’re approaching an entertainment apocalypse as the new four horsemen arrive on the hill: Redbox, Comcast, Marketeers and Spencer Pratt. In a decade, we’re going to be watching puppet shows on network TV and not even Jeff Dunham level puppet shows. But let’s give a run down of trainwrecks that will claim the lives of entertainment business models.

Redbox is a simple concept - a kiosk that allows you to rent a hot new DVD title for a $1 a day. There will be 20,000 of them across the country in grocery stores, drugstores and Wal-marts by the end of the year. They’re a mini-Blockbuster that’s doesn’t required a zit-faced dreamer to run the register. What’s the problem with Redbox? It’s killing to DVD sales market faster than Blockbuster and Netflix. Having Redbox inside Wal-Mart wrecks the impulse buying temptation of the giant sale bin. »

Amy Adams 'Leap Year' trailer: More than just another witless rom-com? Or...not?

13 November 2009 12:29 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Okay, full disclosure: I loathe movies in which seemingly smart, talented women consider snagging a man (a barftastic expression in and of itself) to be the be-all, end-all goal of their existence. It's an insidious trope that reduces us to a flock of retrograde numbskulls. As an anthropological experiment/exercise in masochism, I dragged my husband and some pals to see Bride Wars on opening night earlier this year and I'm still scarred. (Serves me right, I know, I know.) There was a scene in which a small Tiffany box (i.e. The Coveted Ring!) falls from a closet shelf »

Up

If there is one disc sure to fly off shelves this week, it's this one. The Pixar film made instant fans out of most viewers, and agonizingly ripped the rest of our hearts out with the love story opening. In her review, Jette Kernion said Up is "a very good movie that defies demographic categorization." By now, your minds are probably made, but if not: Buy it. Also on Blu-ray.

The Ugly Truth

How do you follow up comments about Knocked Up being a little bit sexist? By producing and starring in a film that teaches a smart and successful woman the "ugly truth" of life from a notorious chauvinist, naturally. In his review, Jeffrey M. Anderson wrote that this romcom "actually knows next to nothing about dating advice, the behaviors of men and women, or much of anything else romantically human. »

Accidentally a Hit

CBS has ordered five more episodes of Jenna Elfman's CBS sitcom Accidentally on Purpose, which has improved upon retaining the ratings from its lead-in How I Met Your Mother. Depending on where your preferences are, Accidentally on Purpose ranges in quality between two of its cinematic predecessors, the oops-a-baby Knocked Up and the oops-a-baby-with-my-gay-friend-in-a-horrible-movie The Next Best Thing. Luckily, Elfman's series seems to be veering closer to the former. [THR] »

A new teaser trailer has been released for DreamWorks Animation's newest 3-D adventure movie, How to Train Your Dragon. Based on Cressida Cowell's 2003 book of the same name, the movie tells the story of a young Viking boy named Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) who befriends a dragon rather than hunting it down and killing it like the others in his village. Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, and Baruchel's Knocked Up co-star Jonah Hill also lend their voices.

A 'Twilight' Actor As Sid Vicious, The World Series And Gwen Stefani In Today's Twitter-Wood

2 November 2009 4:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Halloween tweets were way more interesting this morning since everyone was posting actual photos instead of just being indecisive about what to wear. "Twilight" star Billy Burke took the crown for most authentic, though, with his Sid Vicious outfit. He pretty much nailed the Sex Pistols' late bassist.

"Toy Story 3" director, Lee Unkrich, meanwhile retweeted a few incoming photos he received of well crafted character costumes. Gwen Stefani stood out from the pack in that batch, doing Woody's gal pal Jessie from "Toy Story 2." Then there was Fred Durst, who appears to have put a leg up on December, posting a shot of the Christmas tree he just set up in his living room. Check out all of those, as well as reactions from the World Series, Rob Zombie and John Stamos. They're all waiting after the jump in the Twitter-Wood report for November 2, 2009.

Seth Rogen has revealed that his girlfriend makes him wear "lame" costumes. The Knocked Up star, who dates director Lauren Miller, said that she insists on him dressing up to celebrate Halloween. Rogen told Bang Showbiz: "I have a girlfriend now and I've entered the unfortunate world of paired costuming. It's not fun. I don't recommend it." The 27-year-old actor continued: "I always end up being the lamer half - it's (more) »

Fake 'Twilight' Actors Looking To Make Out And Baseball's World Series In Today's Twitter-Wood

"Twilight" actress Anna Kendrick has a clever friend who's not above impersonating an "Eclipse" actor to make out with unsuspecting prey, so next time someone walks up you at a club telling you they've been filming with David Slade recently, double-check IMDb. Slade, meanwhile, announced an "official" wrap to "Eclipse" filming yesterday, following last week's tweeted wrap by Christian Serratos.

Elsewhere in Twitter-Wood, Rob Zombie noted the passing of former Danzig drummer Chuck Biscuits with a memorial post. The World Series had much of Twitter's attention as Ice-t captured a picture from the stands and Paul Feig pondered the art sunflower seed spitting. You can catch all of that, a Dalek and Emmy Rossum's Ferragamo dress fears after the jump in the Twitter-Wood report for October 29, 2009.

Jonah Hill bringing new animated series to Fox

15 October 2009 4:13 PM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Jonah Hill will soon be stomping around Seth MacFarlane's territory. The comedian has signed on to co-write and contribute voice work to a new Fox animated series. The show will center on a rich seven-year-old kid who walks and talks like an adult and has trouble adapting to public school.

I'm looking forward to Hill's animated show, but I'm also a little wary. You'd think a show co-scripted by Hill would end up on a cable network. The young comedic actor has developed a reputation for his very blue comic rants and ad lib scenes in films like Knocked Up, Funny People and Superbad. It'll be interesting to see him hold his tongue for Fox and still deliver the laughs.
