Rising star Idris Elba seems to be the man of the moment. Last week it was announced he would be joining the cast of Marvel’s Thor, then the first photos of his action movie The Losers were made public, and now the concept posters for his upcoming film Legacy have made their way online.
The film’s official Twitter page have released three concept posters which appear to be something of a rarity as they are not simply airbrushed photographs or photoshopped floating heads on a black background, but rather actual artistic posters.
Idris Elba not only stars in Legacy but is the film’s executive producer. Written and directed by young British Nigerian filmmaker Thomas Ikimi, Legacy co-stars Eamonn Walker (Lord of War), Monique Gabriela Curnen (The Dark Knight), Richard Brake (Batman Begins), and Clarke Peters (The Wire).

Is it fair to compare a young, second time film maker with one of cinema's all time greats? No, of course it's not. But if Thomas Ikimi's ultra low budget debut Limbo wasn't enough to convince you that he has aspersions towards making the same sort of high concept thrillers that made Hitchcock famous, well, a quartet of concept posters for his sophomore effort are here to make that point clear. Titled Legacy, the film stars The Wire's Idris Elba in the lead and the just-released poster art has that classic Saul Bass influence all over it.
Here's the press release that went out went we first covered the film back in May:
Black Camel Pictures are delighted to announce that on May 11th 2009 they began principal photography on their new Us set psychological thriller Legacy starring Idris Elba (Obsessed, The Wire) who also Executive Produces. Legacy was »

Your cinematic birthdays for December 1st. This post is dedicated to frequent reader/commenter Chris Na Taraja who celebrates the big 4-0 today. Happy Birthday, Chris!
1521 Takeda Shingen, Japanese warlord who Kagemusha tried to impersonate. Oopsie. I've actually never seen that Akira Kurosawa picture. How quickly should I rent it?

1935 Woody Allen, legend (abundant posts)
1940 Richard Pryor, influential comedian
1945 Bette Midler the divine. In a fit of complete absence of budgeting sense I nearly purchased a flight to Vegas and a concert ticket last month. Just because. I've never seen her perform on stage but I did used to love her in the movies. Particularly: The Rose, Beaches (so underrated... weepies can't get no respect) and Big Business

Warner Bros may be making the big bucks by adapting the Harry Potter series into eight blockbuster films but, like every major studio, they’re watching major money go to Summit Entertainment with their Twilight saga. The Twilight Saga: New Moon has made $474 million worldwide in just 10 days, snatching records from WB’s recent hits The Dark Knight and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in the process.
I’ve already listed the films given the kiss of death by being called “the next Harry Potter,” but now the tables are turned as WB hurries to tap the young female market. Twilight envy might explain why the studio has optioned “Beautiful Creatures,” a similar supernatural tale of teen romance.
The first book (out of a planned five), from authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, officially hits shelves tomorrow (December 1) and centers on a small town boy who meets the girl »

From MTV.Com: Last Monday, the movie world was abuzz with talk of the "New Moon" box-office haul: $142.8 million domestically, when the final numbers came in — giving the "Twilight" sequel the third-biggest opening weekend ever.
Did that huge number presage box-office immortality for "New Moon"? Would the vampires and werewolves have enough staying power to rise to the level of the highest-grossing films in history, like "Titanic" and "The Dark Knight"? Last week, we suggested that the key to answering these questions would come after the second weekend. Now the numbers are in: $42.5 million from Friday through Sunday and $66 million when you factor in the entire five-day Thanksgiving holiday. What have we learned? With the indispensible help of BoxOfficeMojo.com, let's take a look.

It's a bit disconcerting when a movie takes a 70% tumble in its second weekend, and still ends up with a $66 million holiday take, but that's Twilight fans for you. New Moon took all of eight days to get to $200 million, a number bested only by The Dark Knight and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. It doesn't look like New Moon's staying power will be particularly impressive, but when your movie opens to $142 million, you don't really need it.
A movie that might be sticking around the top of the charts for a few weeks yet is The Blind Side, which surged to get an 18% boost over its strong opening weekend (3-day numbers). The relentlessly positive movie no doubt was helped by families looking for something generically acceptable to watch together over the holiday weekend. Even those who don't care for The Blind Side should be happy that most families »

A few days ago Alcon Entertainment released a poster for their upcoming film The Book of Eli and now they have made public a second poster.
You can click on the image to the left to see the full version.
Directed by the Hughes Brothers (Menace II Society) and starring two of the greatest actors that have ever lived in Denzel Washington (American Gangster) and Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight), The Book of Eli is a film I’ve been anticipating since pre-production.
The film’s premise is outlined as:
In a post-apocalyptic world, a lone hero, Eli (Denzel Washington), guards the Book of Eli, which provides knowledge that could redeem society. The despot (Gary Oldman) of a small, makeshift town plans to take possession of the book.
Co-starring are: Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), Michael Gambon (Layer Cake), Jennifer Beals (Flashdance), Ray Stevenson (Outpost), and Mila Kunis (Forgetting Sarah Marshall »

Apparently Twilighters aren’t one-trick box office ponies after all. A week after making “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” the third best 3-day opening film of all time (behind only “The Dark Knight” and “Spider-Man 3″), the teens came back for a second straight week to keep “New Moon”, the second entry in the “Twilight” series at the number one spot. With a studio estimated $42.5 million in its second week of release, the teen fantasy about sparkling vampires, hunky werewolves, and lovestruck teenage girls has grossed over $230 million so far at the domestic box office, and $362 million worldwide. I think it’s safe to say that Bella and crew are here to stay. Although it hung onto the #1 spot, “New Moon” just barely survived a blind side charge by Sandra Bullock’s “The Blind Side”. The Bullock sports movie, based on the true story of football player Michael Oher (now »

New Images have surfaced from Smallville's Absolute Justice two-hour movie event which airs in the Us on February 5.
There's no date yet for when the UK will air Smallville Season 9 but, in the meantime, we can get a taste of what's in store.
I recently brought readers a glimpse of Hawkman and then a picture of Doctor Fate from a preview teaser for an episode leading up to Absolute Justice.
Now, from Entertainment Weekly, comes an official shot of Doctor Fate and Stargirl and another where Hawkman is fighting Green Arrow.
Although I'm unsure about the look of Hawkman's wings, the rest seems spot on and virtually straight from the comic book pages.
There's been a mixed reaction from fans, which only goes to show that studios are damned if they make changes and damned if they don't.
It also shows how hard it can be to achieve comic book »

This week: Stuart Heritage's top five moral dilemmas on film
The moral conundrum at the heart of new Cameron Diaz film The Box isn't whether or not you should see it – because reviewers seem pretty adamant that you absolutely shouldn't – it's this: would you push a button that gave you a million dollars, even if you knew it meant that a stranger would die? Fiendish. You would, obviously, but it's still quite fiendish. Here are five other cinematic moral dilemmas, along with their solutions …
Two boats filled with explosives – should passengers save themselves by blowing up the other vessel? Yes! They live in Gotham City, so it's not like they have anything to live for. Best-case scenario is that they survive and then a fat bloke dressed as a penguin comes along and kills them after a fortnight. They'd be doing the other boat a favour, »

The Superman franchise continues to struggle as more details emerge from Warner Brothers. In short, Warner Brothers still isn’t doing anything with the project. According to Warner Brothers insiders:
“The studio is still seeking the right direction. No writers are working on a Superman script. ‘We’re working on a strategy for DC,’ says one Warners exec. ‘Superman is the trickiest one to figure out.’ “
Still “seeking the right direction”? No writers? Tricky to figure out? How “tricky” can this be? You only have several movies and hundreds of comics to draw inspiration from. Get it together Warner Brothers.
Now, there is the legal matter to deal with which is rather tricky. I can appreciate the fact WB wants these legalities with the Siegel Estate put to rest but seriously, get moving. Providing some indication that you’re actively developing a new movie could certainly help your case instead of simply squandering time. »

In a new trailer for the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Blu-ray, Daniel Radcliffe invites fans to join him and director David Yates for a special live "community screening" of the film on Saturday, December 12th. If you're not familiar with the concept, this is the third time Warner Bros. has tried something like it, first with The Dark Knight and earlier this year with Watchmen. However, I believe this is the first global event of its kind.
Here's how it works: Once you buy your Blu-ray disc, you can register it at Bd Live, with the first 100,000 assured a seat at the table. The screening of the film begins at 8p GMT, so do your own cipherin' from that point. While you're watching the film, Radliffe and Yates will answer fan questions during their running commentary of the film. »
