Focus Features today announced their 2010 release slate. Highlights include: March 12th 2010: The Squid and the Whale writer/director Noah Baumbach's Greenberg which stars Ben Stiller April 16th 2010: Thomas Balmès' Babies, a documentary film which simultaneously follows four babies around the world - from birth to first steps. Focus Features CEO James Schamus today announced the company's domestic theatrical release slate for 2010, with six confirmed movies to date.
Schamus said, "Next year's Focus slate follows one of the company's best years ever - our eighth profitable year in a row since our inception, and the year in which we passed the $1 billion mark in cumulative domestic box office alone.

The other day we premiered the first images and official synopses from Focus Features Greenberg, The Eagle of the Ninth, and Somewhere. Now, thanks to Focus sending out a press release, we have an idea when some of them are getting released.
On March 12th, director Noah Baumbach’s Greenberg will hit theaters for a limited release. The film stars Ben Stiller. After that we’re getting Thomas Balmes Babies on April 16th and director Anton Corbijn’s The American on September. 1st. That’s the George Clooney assassin film. Sometime in the third quarter will be Kevin Macdonald’s Roman adventure The Eagle of the Ninth, and in November It’s Kind of a Funny Story gets released. The big question mark is Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere, which still doesn’t have a release date.

Adolescence can be a crazy time. Focus Features' latest film shows exactly how true that statement can be.
Focus has announced plans to start production on "It's Kind of a Funny Story," a movie by filmmaking team Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, adapted from Ned Vizzini's novel of the same name. Production - overseen by Misher Films' Kevin Misher and Wayfare Entertainment's Ben Browning, Michael Maher and Peter Rawlinson - will begin in early December in New York. Major casting for the project has also begun. Among the actors already attached are Keir Gilchrist, Emma Roberts, Zach Galifianakis, Lauren Graham, Jim Gaffigan, Zoe Kravitz, Viola Davis and Aasif Mandvi.
The story follows Gilchrist as 16-year-old Craig, who decides to get away from his hectic teenage life and his parents (Graham, Gaffigan) by committing himself to a mental health clinic, only to wind up in the adult ward rather than the children's. »

Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden are the sort of creative team you can't help but love. The duo have given us such recent gems as Half Nelson and Sugar, so you can bet I've been keeping a close eye on their next project, a dramedy entitled It's Kind of a Funny Story, based on the novel of the same name. We've previously reported the announcement of the project, as well as Zach Galifianakis's involvement, and now we have the full cast list to share. Acclaimed writer/directors Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck's new film It's Kind of a Funny Story, will begin production in New York City in early December and has confirmed casting for eight key roles. Focus Features holds worldwide rights to the project, which it is co-financing with Wayfare Entertainment. Focus CEO James Schamus made the announcement today.
Kevin Misher, who most recently produced Michael Mann's Public Enemies and Dito Montiel's Fighting, is producing It's Kind of a Funny Story through his Misher Films with Wayfare Entertainment's Ben Browning. Wayfare's Michael Maher and Peter Rawlinson are executive producers; the company is in pre-production on the 3-D underwater epic Sanctum, to be executive-produced by James Cameron.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the filmmaking team responsible for Half Nelson and Sugar, just announced who will be starring in their next movie: It's Kind of a Funny Story. With filming expected to begin in December in New York City on the Focus Features production, Boden and Fleck revealed United States of Tara's Keir Gilchrist has landed the lead role. The Hangover's Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts, Viola Davis, Zoe Kravitz, Aasif Mandvi, Lauren Graham and Jim Gaffigan have also been cast in the comedy-drama.

Viola Davis Joins Funny Story

Somebody give Viola Davis' agent a rise. The actress has signed on not one, but two dotted lines, joining It's Kind Of A Funny Story as well as David Schwimmer's sophmore directorial effort, Trust. She joins Zach Galifianakis in Funny Story, which is based on Ned Vizzini's semi-autobiographical novel and is directed by Ryan 'Half Nelson' Fleck. It focuses on a suicidally depressed New York teen who, rather than leaping from the Brooklyn Bridge, checks into a psychiatric hospital where he finds help and inspiration. Davis will bring the inspiration as his psychiatrist, while Galifianakis will no doubt deliver the funny. Trust, meanwhile, will demand more altruism of Davis. She'll play a counsellor assigned to protect a 14 year-old girl (Liana Liberato) who's duped by an online predator. It's heavyweight stuff with a reasonably heavyweight cast: Clive Owen and Catherine Keener are on board as the girl's parents. »

IFP's Gotham Independent Film Awards kicks off the awards season in November each year with an impressive list of nominees, and this year's list is no different. While it includes big names like the Coens for A Serious Man and buzzy films like The Hurt Locker and Big Fan, it also gives deserving nods to smaller films like Amreeka, a wonderful film about a mother and son from the West Bank who move the Illinois. The awards also include tributes to the careers of Natalie Portman, Stanley Tucci, and The Hurt Locker's director Kathryn Bigelow, as well as producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, who both worked on A Serious Man, The Soloist, State of Play, and a slew of other projects.

In another story of actors wanting to become musicians or musicians wanting to become actors, here comes the tale of Ryan Gosling and his band Dead Man's Bones. According to Jam [1]!, my favourite cast member of Breaker High [2] has decided to take a few months off from acting and focus on music. I suppose he's earned the chance to do this. With superb acting performances in The Believer and Half Nelson maybe he can translate that into music. If you haven't heard much from his band check this [3] out. Not much in the way of actual music videos from the band, but you can get a good idea of what they're about. I should point out that this isn't indicative of Canadian music, but I'll hand it to him and say that at the very least, it's different. He and partner Zach Shield sing about zombies with broken hearts and other weird stuff. »

Hangover star Zach Galifianakis has signed on to star in It's Kind of a Funny Story, a coming-of-age dramedy from writer-directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. Fleck and Boden previously wrote and directed the acclaimed indie drama Half Nelson. Emma Roberts, whose credits include Aquamarine, Nancy Drew, Hotel for Dogs and The Winning Season, is also in talks to join. The film is based on the young-adult novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini. The film centers on a teenage boy who, after a bout of depression, is sent to a mental institution, where he ends up in the adult ward and meets a number of offbeat adults as well as a quirky teenage girl.
