War Machine And The 'Iron Man 2' Movie Poster: Where Have We Seen This Before?

7 hours ago | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

War Machine made his grand debut this week in the first official "Iron Man 2" poster, standing side-by-side with leading man and best buddy Tony Stark. But most comic book and movie enthusiasts are too busy gushing over the reveal of James "Rhodey" Rhodes in his highly militarized armor to realize a fundamental truth — this poster has been seen before.

Alright, this exact poster is completely new to the world, but the positioning of Iron Man and War Machine — two compatriots, positioned one in front of the other, ready to face the world as a team — is a standard pose when it comes to Hollywood posters.

Don't believe me? Check out these six movie posters that follow a similar formula to the latest "Iron Man 2" poster for further proof.

1. Brokeback Mountain

The tragic and profound romance between cowboys Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist is captured in this famous poster for "Brokeback Mountain. »

Apocalypse Now tops London critics' 30th anniversary poll

19 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Francis Ford Coppola's nightmarish vision of the Vietnam war is named best film of the past three decades, beating Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List to the top spot

Apocalypse Now was today named as the best film of the past three decades by the London Film Critics' Circle (Lfcc). Francis Ford Coppola's nightmarish vision of the Vietnam war beat out Steven Spielberg's 1994 holocaust drama Schindler's List to take top spot in the poll, held to celebrate the organisation's 30th anniversary.

Third place went to German film The Lives of Others, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's Oscar-winner for best foreign language film in 2007. The top five was rounded out by two very different movies with western themes: Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, from 1992, and Ang Lee's 2005 tale of gay cowboys, Brokeback Mountain.

Chair of the circle and Observer writer Jason Solomons said: "I'm delighted that such a powerful and »

Apocalypse Now Is Critics' Top Film

22 hours ago | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Top critics have voted Francis Ford Coppola's war movie Apocalypse Now the best film of the last 30 years.

The 1979 drama, starring Marlon Brando and Martin Sheen, is number one on a new poll celebrating 30 years of the London Film Critics' Circle Awards.

Apocalypse Now, which won Best Film at the inaugural ceremony in 1980, came ahead of Steven Spielberg's Holocaust epic Schindler's List, which was voted second best.

The Critics' Circle, the world's oldest organisation of critics, also recognised The Lives of Others, Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven and Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain, which rounded out the top five respectively.

Chairman of the Film Critics' Circle Jason Solomons says, "I'm delighted that such a powerful and brilliant film as Apocalypse Now has won the enduring admiration of the London critics.

"Coppola's towering film is a worthy winner and clearly its anti-war message, monumental performances and dazzling film-making technique have stood the test of time, making it as relevant to critics today as it was when it won best film at our first awards ceremony 30 years ago."

The 30th annual London Film Critics' Circle Awards will take place on 18 February in the British capital. »

Rupert Everett | I wouldn't advise any actor thinking of his career to come out

28 November 2009 4:10 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

He had Hollywood at his feet at the age of 25. So why has Rupert Everett never lived up to that early promise? Here, the outspoken actor talks about homophobia, deranged A-listers and why Madonna isn't speaking to him

Can anyone look more world weary than Rupert Everett? At certain points in the interview, he gives the impression of having been in the acting game since at least the dawn of time, if not before. These are eyes that have seen it all – glittering success, abject failure, critical acclaim, the best reviews on earth, the worst. But then, at times, his career trajectory has resembled the cardiogram of a 60-a-day, overweight smoker: up, down, up, critical, dead, alive again! He was a star at 22, a has-been at 30, a Hollywood ingenue at 40, and here he is again, aged 50, still handsome, still game, gadding around in the new St Trinian's film in a »

Preview: Brothers

27 November 2009 4:01 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

About ten years ago, three promising young actors were working to secure a place amongst the Hollywood A-list. Natalie Portman had finished her first major acting role, as Mathilda in Luc Bessons Leon. She would go on to make her major breakthrough in the Star Wars prequels. Tobey Maguire had small roles in respected films like The Cider House Rules and Wonder Boys, then also got his major break in a high budget franchise, winning the role of Spiderman. Jake Gyllenhaal came to public attention through his role in sleeper Indie hit Donnie Darko, then hit the big time through a combination of big budget popcorn in The Day After Tomorrow, and critically acclaimed drama in Brokeback Mountain. Next week in the Us, these three actors, firmly A-List, come together for Jim Sheridan’s brothers.

Cineastes List "Most Important" Films of the Decade

27 November 2009 4:49 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

We broke down the Paste list of the best films of the decade. It's tough business, but I thought that list was consistent, had enough mass appeal and artsy oomph, and was worthy of future discussion. What Paste did that I'm not sure I agree with was extend the list past the usual ten to encompass 50 movies. Even because you're looking at ten years instead of one, I think 20 or 25 is about the limit. Fifty or 100 just seems like overkill. To me, anyway.

Here's a list you'll probably have to check with the ol' IMDb or something, because chances are you won't have seen them all. The Auteurs has the details of "a curated series based on a poll conducted by [Toronto International Film Festival] Cinematheque's Senior Programmer James Quandt," which includes input from film historians, curators, film festival programmers, and other like-minded individuals.

The list isn't really "the best," but rather "the most important. »

Natalie Portman personally thinks that her co-star in upcoming movie "Brothers", Jake Gyllenhaal, is perfect yet unattractive. The 28-year-old star jested in a recent interview that the boyfriend of actress Reese Witherspoon is flawless, before jokingly adding, "Too bad he's ugly".

"Jake is the kind of guy who can do a spot-on impression of someone you work with that will make you giggle," Natalie pointed on Jake's positive sides. "He knows home remedies for distressed hair. He can build a cabinet from scratch. He plays guitar and has a great voice. Kids and dogs love him. He loves his mom and sister and girlfriend."

While Natalie spoke about what she thinks of Jake, her co-star Jake talked about one of the reasons he agreed playing in the movie, revealing that he wants to prove that he and co-star Tobey Maguire are not identical looking. He recalled, "People have very often »

Jake Gyllenhaal isn't bugged out Nicole Richie-style about the snappers. The "Brokeback Mountain" star says he doesn't mind the paparazzi too much when out with girlfriend Reese Witherspoon. Anne Hathaway 'approached for role in Spider-Man 4'

Yet another actress is reported to be under consideration for a possible role in the next Spider-Man film.

This time it's Anne Hathaway joining the queue of female contenders.

Her previous credits include Brokeback Mountain, The Devil Wears Prada and Becoming Jane.

According to a report by Movie Scoop, and subsequently Deadline Hollywood, producers of Spider-Man 4 have approached the 27-year-old actress to star in the film.

No role was specified but fan speculation suggests it's Felicia Hardy aka the villainous love interest Black Cat.

2012 brings Indian summer to UK box office

17 November 2009 7:38 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Roland Emmerich's disaster blockbuster heralds a period of sunny box-office receipts, with the vampires and werewolves of Twilight set to keep the winter chill at bay next week

The winner

Question: when is a summer blockbuster not a summer blockbuster? Answer: when it's released in November, of course. Roland Emmerich's patented formula of awesome planetary destruction and human heroics always screams out for a summer release, but this year Sony chose not to throw his 2012 into a competitive market already crowded with Transformers, Terminators and Wolverine. And the strategy has paid off, with an opening gross of £6.49m, proof that audiences will line up to see a big, dumb action flick no matter what month it is.

It's not the biggest opening of the year – it is behind both Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. But if you strip out the »

Film review: Taking Woodstock

It's a bland, faintly pointless slice of sentimentality, suggesting comedy isn't Ang Lee's strong suit, says Peter Bradshaw

To establish career flexibility, or maybe just to serve up a little sorbet after red-meat pictures like Lust, Caution and Brokeback Mountain, director Ang Lee has tried his hand at some undemanding period fun. It's a bland, faintly pointless slice of sentimentality, suggesting comedy isn't Lee's strong suit: the wacky true story of how the legendary 1969 Woodstock festival came to be born.

Earnest Jewish kid Elliot Tiber – played by comedian Demetri Martin – is bullied by his ferocious mom (Imelda Staunton) and gentle dad (Henry Goodman) into helping out at their chaotic holiday-hotel in the Catskill mountains in upstate New York. Noticing how a massive pop festival has just been refused permission to go ahead nearby, Elliot sees how his own licence to hold a local "arts event" could be his moment of destiny. »
