Trivia:
55 local extras were cast as "Roman Legionaries" and sent to a two-week boot camp, living in tents, to train as Roman soldiers. "Boot Camp" included military discipline (up at 5am bed by 9pm), marching, swordsmanship, camp building and dismantling, group training and maneuvers (day and night time training), and bathing restricted to the local lake without soap at night. 43 of the 55 completed "Boot Camp".

Goofs:
Factual errors: At the beginning of the series Lucius Vorenus is the primus pilas, or senior centurion, of the Thirteenth Legion. In the show he is referred to as "First Spear Centurion;" this is a mistranslation of his title. The correct translation of primus pilas in this sense would be "first file," meaning the front line of the legion.

This series is off to a stellar start! I was VERY impressed by the first episode. True, a great many characters were introduced, but what do you expect? You have to get the pieces onto the board before the game can begin. I'm really looking forward to where it goes. I'm a history buff with a fascination for Greek/Roman/Byzantine history. "Alexander" was dreadful. I couldn't even watch the first episode of "Empire" without turning it off. But this... this looks good. Now let's get a movie based on Turteltaub's fine book "Justinian". All in all fantastic. I hear that it's only a mini-series slated for twelve episodes. That's a pity. I'd like to see a regular series set in this world. Excellent all around to everyone involved!
