Hai-Alarm, known in the US as Shark Attack in the Mediterranean, is pretty much what you expect it to be; a bad low-budget direct-to-TV shark film. A shame really. The concept of this film could have worked a lot better as a movie with a much larger budget that you would be released in theaters. But while it is a pretty terrible movie, it is slightly better than several low budget shark films released in the past couple of years. Then, as it moves on, it drops in quality to be below even some of those shark movies.
Hai-Alarm's special effects aren't actually terrible, a surprise considering the type of movie it is. Sometimes the special effects are really good. With that being said though, the effects do have their moments when they are really really crappy.
What Hai-Alarm does that makes it loose points is a lot of things. First the acting, it's horrible. It's below Sci-Fi channel quality. Not to mention the truly horrific English dubbed version of the film. The dub's so bad it's almost on par with many of the older Godzilla dubbed movies. The English Dub is that bad. The plot is bottom of the barrel Sci-Fi Channel garbage. It's also seemingly a rip-off of Steve Alten's Meg series of novels, which are far superior to this trash and would most likely make better movies, even if they would be effects heavy.
The crowning moment of stupidity happens towards the climax while during the climatic final battle with the shark, they cut to one of the worst musical beach numbers in history by some talentless chick.
What could have been a slightly enjoyable bad shark movie devolves into cookie cutter garbage. I don't really recommend it except for the special effects which vary in quality as the film moves along.
This film needed a much better dubbing company than first look, who wouldn't even take the foreign language subtitles out of the movie at one point (you'll know it when you see it).
