Best Of 2009: Overheard at the Gothams

10 hours ago | GreenCine Daily | See recent GreenCine Daily news »

Not half an hour after The Hurt Locker won the Best Feature prize at last night's Gotham Independent Film Awards, hordes of awardgoers trekked from Cipriani Wall Street to the Kodak/indieWIRE afterparty at the Tribeca Cinemas. Free liquor still being one of life's great social lubricants, even those who headed to the party empty-handed were in pleasant spirits when I asked about their favorite films of 2009—Gothams-related or otherwise:

"Fantastic Mr. Fox was hand-made and the kind of care that goes in with that feels intimate. It's impossible to fake. Wes Anderson always has that ability to bring you into a world that you think you know but don't, and allows you an invitation. I haven't had more fun in the movies in a while."

Quentin Tarantino talks ‘Kill Bill 3′

12 hours ago | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Director Quentin Tarantino talked about the third Kill Bill film, which will once again star Uma Thurman. The next Kill Bill will take place ten years after the second installment.

“It wouldn’t be Kill Bill,” Tarantino said discussing the title to his new endeavor. “It would be Volume 3 of the story of the Bride.”

“There’s no script; there are just ideas and notes. I won’t do that next, but it could very well be the thing I do after next,” said the 46-year-old auteur.

Uma Thurman revealed in October than she had been in discussions with Tarantino over the project. “Yeah, I think it’d be fun,” the hot 39-year-old said.

“[Quentin and I] did chat, we did chat. He has not yet finished the script. I don’t even really know if he’s really started it, although I got a taste of some of his ideas and they are really good. »

Tarantino Won't Call 'Kill Bill Vol. 3' 'Kill Bill Vol. 3'

13 hours ago | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

If (or more likely, when) Quentin Tarantino returns to the Bride wars, it won't be called Kill Bill Vol. 3. There's simple logic involved: Bill's done been killed. Oops...forgot the spoiler alert. Qt told MTV recently he's already come to terms with that, and he'd have to give it a new name.

"It wouldn't be Kill Bill, " Tarantino stated. "It would be Volume 3 of the story of the Bride." But that's about as far as he's taken it, apparently. "There's no script; there are just ideas and notes," Tarantino said. "I won't do that next, but it could very well be the thing I do after next."

We'd heard that last bit before, marking one of the few times Tarantino has stayed consistent with his plans. Among the possibilities several months ago were a western and a classic gangster movie, and each of those genres has clearly fed the filmmaker Qt has become. »

Kill Bill 3 Not Happening For A While

16 hours ago | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

How long is a piece of string? Exactly. And when it comes to waiting for Quentin Tarantino to make a film, you can ask the same question…kind of. First Showing recently caught up with the American maestro and asked him for an update on all things Bride related, and he announced: “There’s no script, there are just ideas and notes…we’re getting there, we’re about one movie away.”

Tarantino resurrected his career after the ill-received Grindhouse with the mighty Inglourious Basterds. It is perhaps his most thoroughly enjoyable film since Pulp Fiction. It’s his biggest box office strike, too.

Kill Bill was his love letter to all things kung fu-related. If the first part was a lean, mean fighting machine, the second part was a rather bloated affair with a dull climax. Does the world need to hear from The Bride again after she settled her score? »

Kill Bill 3 Not Tarantino’s Next Movie & Title Will Change

16 hours ago | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

When writer/director, Quentin Tarantino, announced his plans to make Kill Bill 3 a couple of months ago, one of the many speculative questions on fans’ lips was how can they make a Kill Bill 3 if the titular Bill [spoiler alert!] was killed at the end of Vol. 2? [end spoiler]. The saga of Uma Thurman’s yellow-haired, sword-wielding Bride was tied up perfectly at the end of the second film, and it’s just not possible to carry on the story of her and Bill (because there is no story to continue!).

It goes without saying that it’s an issue Mr. Tarantino would have to address when writing Kill Bill 3. But what does the man himself have to say about it? Well, MTV recently got a chance to ask Qt about the title in an interview in which he said the following – “It wouldn’t be ‘Kill Bill,’… It would be Volume 3 of the story of the Bride. »

Kill Bill 3 won't be Tarantino's next

20 hours ago | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

Tarantino has spoken out on his upcoming directorial slate, and it turns out that the further adventures of the Bride (Aka Beatrix Kiddo) will not be arriving as soon as some anticipated. In fact, don't rule out an Inglourious Basterds-length wait. Tarantino says of the project: "Well, it wouldn't be Kill Bill obviously, It would be Volume 3 of the story of the Bride". "There's no script, there are just ideas and notes" he adds. On the project's status, Qt says: "There's no script, there are just ideas...

So Alec Baldwin Might Win an Oscar for Exposing Himself On Screen?

30 November 2009 10:14 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

I love The Hollywood Reporter. Beyond measure. Especially on days like this when it's a little chilly outside, the future seems bleak and unrelenting, and the lack of discussion regarding penises on screen garnering awards praise is downright staggering. Over at the respectable rag, Gregg Kilday has written a piece about how Alec Baldwin, a man who is co-hosting the Academy Awards this year, may actually be in the running for an award himself. Conflict! Intrigue! But why is the thespian in the hunt for gold? The writer is claiming that Baldwin's role in the upcoming It's Complicated might earn him an Oscar. To be fair, I haven't seen the film or the performance, but it's a bold claim nonetheless, and it's even bolder because Kilday seems to hint that part of the reason is because of little Alec. Thanks to his performance in Nancy Meyers' marital comedy "It's Complicated," Baldwin »

Tarantino Says Kill Bill 3 Isn't Next & Will Have a Newer Title

30 November 2009 2:25 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

We all saw this coming. Even though it was widely reported in early October that Quentin Tarantino had made a promise on an Italian talk show that "the Bride [would] fight again," it's not exactly going to be his next project. We can't forget that this is Tarantino, and he says these kind of things all the time and hypes up projects for years and years (just look how long it took Inglourious Basterds to get made). MTV talked with Tarantino recently and got him to clarify the situation regarding Kill Bill Vol. 3. "I won't do that next, but it could very well be the thing I do after next," Tarantino explained. So don't start getting excited yet. Additionally, since the "Bill" that Beatrix Kiddo is after in Kill Bill gets what's coming to him in the end, it won't be titled Kill Bill Vol. 3 anyway. "Well, it wouldn't ... »

The Satellites Have Launched. What Are They Orbiting?

30 November 2009 6:10 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The Satellites (formerly Golden) have announced their 2009 nominations for what it's worth. And you might be screaming "not very much".

It's hard to know what to make of this Golden Globe splinter group. There is never much of a narrative thread in their nominations. You can't sense from year to year a type of film they like or whatnot. Which makes them feel a bit suspect. They also do very strange things which you're about to see if you read their nominations. They never get much attention and yet they keep plugging away. This year they were especially kind to 2012 (who knew?), Nine and The Stoning of Soraya M. But they were downright rude to the sci-fi drama Moon which received zero nominations despite their lack of aversion to sci-fi films. I mention this because the moon is a natural satellite and the Satellites are artificial. Maybe they're jealous. What they're orbiting we know not. »

Top 10 flops of the 00's

30 November 2009 | Cineman.ch/en | See recent Cineman.ch/en news »

With the decade coming to a close at the end of the year, it's time to take stock. Here is a list of the biggest financial flops of 2000's first decade. #10: 2008's "The Spirit". With a price tag of $60 million, graphic novelist Frank Miller's movie took in barely a third of that, despite a fabulous cast that included Eva Mendes, Scarlett Johansson and Spain's Paz Vega. #9: The ambitious but too-pointed 1970¹s B-movie homage "Grindhouse". The movie made only $25 million but cost $67 million, which tainted maker Quentin Tarantino a loser in 2007. Meanwhile, America's enfant terrible has redeemed himself with "Inglourious Basterds". #9: The remake of the 1970's classic, "Rollerball", released in 2002. $70 million price tag, $19 million in sales. The failure seems to have tanked the career of formerly success director John McTiernan, who later got 4 months for lying to the FBI in the Anthony Pellicano affair. #7: "The Invasion »

The 2009 Satellite Award Nominees

30 November 2009 2:57 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Every year, The International Press Academy hands out the Satellite Awards, which used to be the Golden Satellite Awards. The key in all of this is "Press Academy," meaning this may look similar to some Oscar nominees, but it's not at all the same groups of voters.

There's one other caveat before we show you the nominees and the Ipa's top ten movies of the year, which is that the Satellites share the Golden Globes dileniation between drama and musical/comedy films...but only in certain categories. That's still very annoying. Why not Best Director, Musical or Comedy if you have two acting awards and a Best Picture for that split?

Be that as it may, there are a few movies you probably wouldn't expect to see and some you won't find here that you thought you would. Conspicuous by their absence are Invictus and The Lovely Bones. If you »

2009 Satellite Awards – Nominations

30 November 2009 1:29 AM, PST | Alternative Film Guide | See recent Alternative Film Guide news »

Why should anyone give a damn about the (Golden) Satellite Awards? Well, how often will you see a small, little-seen indie like The Stoning of Soraya M. (above) listed as one of the best films of the year? Or Hugh Dancy shortlisted for his performance in Adam? Or Mozhan Marno listed as best supporting actress, also for The Stoning of Soraya M.? Or the absence of two of the "top ten films of the year" from the list of the year’s twelve best films (six dramas, six comedies or musicals)? The two absent (best) films, by the way, are (500) Days of Summer and Inglourious Basterds. Quentin Tarantino was also ignored when it came to the shortlisting the year’s best directors. Tarantino and Brad Pitt on Wacky Japanese Food Show, Pitt Wants Inglourious Basterds Prequels

30 November 2009 12:29 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Talk of an Inglourious Basterds prequel is nothing new. Back in June we reported on a GQ interview where Harvey Weinstein talked about the vast amounts of material Tarantino had prepped for Basterds, much of which could be compiled into other films and projects. Word was that the next film would be about a squad of African American soldiers that come across the Basterds. Now we have news that Brad Pitt is actually pushing for the prequels from the unlikeliest of sources: A wacky Japanese food show. Check out a clip of Pitt and Tarantino on the show after the break. Tarantino had previously mentioned to MTV that "If Brad will have his way, then [a prequel or sequel] will happen." On the talk show clip below, Pitt furthered that thought, "I'm trying to get him to make a prequel. Two of them. Three of them." Obviously, he seems to joking a ... »

A Serious Man and the odd movie out

A Serious Man may be getting rave reviews – but it's like nothing the Coens have made before. Joe Queenan on weird one-offs and the directors who make them

About halfway through the very funny, very disturbing, very ethnic new film A Serious Man, the modern-day Job who is the serious man in question climbs up on to the roof of his ghastly 1960s Minneapolis suburban home and tries to adjust the antenna to improve his TV reception. Beleaguered on all fronts – conjugally, professionally, medically – Larry Gopnik, a dorky physics professor who may be about to lose his job and is very likely to lose his family, is a bright, principled Jewish man whose children have begged him to fix the antenna so they can watch F Troop, an idiotic 1960s comedy. Inglourious Basterds

DVD & Blu-ray, Universal

It's taken a decade for this to arrive (no time wasted on spellcheck, though), and Quentin Tarantino's epic second world war romp is the best thing he's done in ages. It's deceptively Tarantino-esque; just because it's a period piece doesn't mean he skimps on his trademark pop-culture references. It's just that here he geeks out not on Les Big Macs and exploitation movies but on 1920s/30s German cinema, which certainly separates the men from the (fan)boys. You don't need a diploma in German mountain movies to have fun with this, though. The tale, delivered in five generous interlocking chapters, is told masterfully. Just when you think one segment is beginning to outstay its welcome, a stylish twist is performed. Unusually for Tarantino, there's a good spread of performances too. Where his films normally play like a group of actors taking turns to »
