The Road Review

24 November 2009 10:35 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Short Version: The Road taps the power, beauty and horror of Cormac McCarthy’s novel and gives us a movie that is both gorgeous and gut-wrenching.

Screen Rant Reviews The Road

For those biting their nails in anticipation (I know you’re out there), I’ll skip the usual opening fanfare and get right to it: In my opinion, director John Hillcoat has successfully taken the power, beauty and horror of Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Road and translated it, intact, to the big screen. I think that those moviegoers who don’t already read McCarthy now have another good example of why they should (The Coen Brothers’ No Country For Old Men being the other); I think that those who Do read McCarthy will at least be happy that the movie version “didn’t screw it up,” and at most will truly appreciate the movie based on its own merits. »

The Forgotten: Fairies at the Bottom of the Garden

20 November 2009 3:26 PM, PST | The Auteurs | See recent The Auteurs news »

When critic David Ehrenstein told actor Sir Ian McKellen that there existed a photograph of actor Roddy McDowell (How Green was My ValleyPlanet of the Apes) performing oral sex upon himself, the great stage and screen star's response was immediate: "Put it up on the internet!" he boomed, in the voice that breathed life in to Gandalf the Grey.

Alas, or not, the image under discussion still apparently lacks a public forum, and is as elusive as McDowell's sole film as director, Tam Lin a.k.a. The Ballad of Tam-Lin a.k.a. The Devil's Widow, starring Ava Gardner.

1970, of course, was the one year in the history of western civilization when the ability to self-fellate was alone enough to guarantee a directing career, and so it was that McDowell found himself in Scotland, filming Ian McShane (sweary Al Swearingen from TV's Deadwood) running screaming through a swamp on Lsd. »

As Dollhouse disappears from TV, what other hitmakers' shows have been axed?

10 November 2009 11:12 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Joss Whedon show has been taken off air – for now at least – and looks unlikely to be back for a third season

Usually we'd have an episode-by-episode review of Dollhouse up at this point in the week. But not today – because it's disappeared from both UK and Us the schedules.

The fact that the latest show from Joss Whedon - who has Buffy, Angel and, Firefly among his credits - is missing comes as a disappointment (if not a shock) to its most ardent fans. While Dollhouse will have the chance to finish its Us TV run in December, and presumably its UK run not long after, that still asks a lot of viewers.

Problems with the show came after Fox in the Us decided the audience figures weren't strong enough - it has been in a notoriously difficult Friday night slot - and so for the duration of November »

The series will tell how human colonies created the robotic Cyclons that would later try to destroy mankind. The first season is expected to air in the USA on Syfy in January; it's also been picked up by Sky1 in the UK and Ireland.

Caprica stars Esai Morales as lawyer Joseph Adama (father of Battlestar's Admiral William Adama) and Eric Stoltz as wealthy technologist Daniel Graystone, who meet when their daughters are killed in the same terrorist bombing.

An Exclusive Interview with Supernatural Star Jim Beaver

28 October 2009 2:07 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

Supernatural fans know Jim Beaver as Bobby.

But the veteran actor has appeared on a slew of well-reviewed, popular shows, from classics such as The West Wing to current hits such as Big Love.

In an exclusive interview with TV Fanatic, the affable actor talked about his long career, while hyping an upcoming episode of Supernatural he describes as "one of the most memorable we've ever had..."

TV Fanatic: Talk about the evolution of Bobby as a character on Supernatural.

Beaver: When I first shot the finale of season one, nobody said anything about this being a recurring character. But I was very pleased to come back for a second episode - Deadwood was coming to an end and I was concerned about my next job - and, by the third episode, we all began thinking Bobby could be an integral part of the show.

Festival Nouveau Cinéma 2009: Handsome Harry

20 October 2009 9:58 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

[caption id="attachment_14823" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Handsome Harry"][/caption] Handsome Harry Directed by Bette Gordon A spectacular cast and a deliberate tone help to distract from director Bette Gordon's Handsome Harry, which acts both as an emotionally detailed character study and a slightly ungainly road movie. The titular Harry (Jamey Sheridan), an aging ex-Navy electrician, is shaken from his cozy small-town existence when he receives a call from an old Navy buddy (Steve Buscemi), who is dying of a dire, unnamed disease. He summons Harry to his deathbed to exact one final wish: to track down Kagan (Campbell Scott), the old cohort that Harry, along with Buscemi and a gaggle of their Navy buddies, viciously assaulted following a wild night at sea. Bound by a sense of duty, Harry travels to Miami to find Kagan, dropping in on the rest of his old crew along the way, who are played to the hilt by an impressive array of character actors, »

You know it's going to be a good interview when "Couples Retreat" star Malin Akerman starts off by saying, "Time to unwind, undress and get skinny-dipping!"

Coolest woman ever? Probably. Mind you, her call to party wasn't completely out of context. MTV News had traveled quite a ways to hang out with Akerman and her co-stars Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Kristen Bell, Kristin Davis and Jon Favreau. On this particular day in paradise, Akerman decided to mix up some cocktails in the midst of an interview — what she dubbed a Bora Bora margarita: pineapple nectar subbing in for lime juice.

"I like my stuff strong," she warned. "I don't know about you guys."

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Season Two Blu-Ray Review

8 October 2009 8:57 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

As a science fiction nerd, I was onboard Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles at the word “Terminator”.  The show focuses on the bond between Sarah and her son John as they work together with the first cute Terminator, Cameron, to stave off Armageddon.  Were they successful?  Was it entertaining?  More after the jump.

For those unfamiliar with the Terminator franchise… In the first film, aptly titled The Terminator, Kyle Reese comes back to the present to protect Sarah Connor from a killer robot called, you guessed it, the Terminator (played by then actor, now Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger).  While in our present, Reese regales Sarah with stories of his heroic fight with the resistance against machines behind their leader, her son John.  Prior to his arrival, Sarah wasn’t even pregnant.  A little bit of intimacy with Kyle solves that problem (thanks time travel!)  Sarah then goes about trying »

Opening Case 39

5 October 2009 9:19 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

The plot device of adults protecting children is a time-honored subject in horror films. An omnipresent evil plotting and casting its inky tendrils toward the young and innocent has been seen in films as diverse as John Schlesinger’s Santeria-inflected The Believers, the Dean Koontz adaptation The Servants Of Twilight and Chuck Russell’s misguided Bless The Child. The defense of youth inspires the most protective of emotions in audiences, and the latest film to tap into these specific emotions is Paramount’s supernatural thriller Case 39.

Directed by German up-and-comer Christian Alvart, who first attracted attention with his serial-murder saga Antibodies and subsequently helmed this fall’s sci-fi chiller Pandorum, from a script by Pulse’s Ray Wright, Case 39 stars Oscar-winner Renee Zellweger, Deadwood’s Ian McShane and ubiquitous young actress Jodelle Ferland. After numerous delays (and release in numerous other international territories this winter), the film will open in U. »

Remake Machine Churns Out a Wicked Trailer for ‘The Crazies’

2 October 2009 12:37 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The remake machine keeps getting its groove on all over the 1970s and 80s and now we've got a trailer for the redo of one of George Romero's lesser known (compared to his Dead flicks) movies, The Crazies. Both the original and the remake revolve around - what else - the American military screwing something up and causing people to die, go crazy, and commit murder.  More accurately, a military plane crashes, polluting the water supply of a small town with a chemical weapon that causes either death or insanity.  As you'll see in the trailer below, the longer people are affected by it, the more like a zombie they start to look.  But they're not zombies.  Honest. Now I can't claim to be a fan of the original, but I can say that this movie looks badass.  I'm a big Tim Olyphant supporter and he looks like he's nailing the role he was born to »

It centers on "Hank Dolworth" (Logue), an ex-cop who partners with his best friend "Britt Pollack" (Raymond-James) to launch an unlicensed private investigation business. 'Priest' Ordains Three New Castmembers: Amick, Plummer, Dourif Join Roster

18 September 2009 8:11 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

"Priest" is assembling quite the cast already -- in addition to "Twilight" actor Cam Gigandet and "True Blood" star Stephen Moyer, among several others, a trio of new actors have just been announced for the project.

According to multiple sources, actress Madchen Amick and actors Christopher Plummer and Brad Dourif are joining the cast of "Priest," based on the popular manga series of the same name.

Paul Bettany stars as the titular warrior priest who must track down his kidnapped niece, presumably abducted by a group of vicious vampires. Variety reports that Amick will play Shannon, the mother of the kidnapped niece and wife of Stephen Moyer's still unnamed character. Although Dourif and Plummer's roles aren't entirely clear yet, director Scott Stewart announced their casting by way of Twitter.

Given "Priest's" blend of horror and Western elements, Dourif should be right at home in the manga adaptation. The »

'Eclipse' Problems On Set, 'New Moon' And Coconuts In Today's Twitter Wood

11 September 2009 5:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

"Twilight" frustrations bubbled up in the Twitter-Wood feed today, though I'm not sure what some of them were about precisely. David Slade reiterated his irritation at planes flying over his "Eclipse" set, which may have been compounded by problems involving goats. Meanwhile, Christian Serratos cryptically sounded off with her desire to see "New Moon," which apparently she is not allowed to do quite yet.

Elsewhere, photos from Eliza Dushku and Emmy Rossum showed up with flannel shirt thoughts and a mysterious coconut left in the back of a taxi cab. You really don't know where that's been, Emmy. (Be safe.) Sarah Silverman wins the Twitter Pic of the Day award, though. Click on down, and I think you'll see why. It's in the Twitter-Wood report for September 11, 2009.

Secret Identity: Who Should Play Green Arrow In 'Super Max'?

10 September 2009 3:01 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Like it or not, "Super Max" could well be in danger. The Green Arrow-starring film has unexpected competition in the form of "Supermax"—an almost identically titled movie with a similar premise, except instead of super villains incarcerated in a maximum security prison, the focus is on supernatural killers.

For this reason, I identified "Green Arrow" as one of the top five franchises that DC Entertainment needs to prioritize as they go forth with their movie plans.

Of course, "Super Max" can't happen without an Emerald Archer—certainly not in its current script form—so here are a few actors that would deliver a bullseye as Oliver Queen.

Bradley Cooper: As one of the top contenders for "Green Lantern," actor Bradley Cooper must have exuded some superheroic quality in the eyes of the WB, even if he himself isn't so proud of his audition. Part of that might be »
