Quietly and unexpectedly, Matt Damon has become the premier Hollywood actor of the past decade. He's lent his minutely constructed, surprisingly athletic performances to the films of directors Steven Soderbergh, Gus Van Sant, Paul Greengrass, Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood, a roster that's not coincidentally produced some of the most vital and successful films of the past ten years.
His remarkable career isn't simply a matter of a good agent. It's all in the manner in which he so carefully adapts his particular skills to the roles.
Damon's commitment is displayed on his body, which he relentlessly crafts to the specifications of each character -- he's almost the anti-movie star in his physical malleability. Take a look at how he changes from "The Bourne Identity" in 2002 to the Farrelly Brothers' "Stuck On You," a year later. In the former, he carved himself down to muscle and bone, a tightly packed »

Robert De Niro can't get enough of Angelina Jolie.
The actor, 66, tells "Extra" Jolie, 34, is one of the actors he'd "love to work with."

It's been almost a week since Ridley Scott was in the trades. Did you miss seeing his name attached to another potential directorial gig? Well, this latest Scott news doesn't concern a new project. He has long talked about doing a movie about the Gucci family, which would presumably climax with the murder of former fashion mogul Maurizio Gucci, who was gunned down in 1995 by a hitman hired by his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani. Now, according to Variety, Angelina Jolie has been offered the part of Reggiani.
Despite having more anticipated projects, like the "Alien" prequel (which we'd love to see Jolie star in), and more marketable ideas, like the "Monopoly" board game adaptation, on his plate, Scott is still actively developing "Gucci." The film is reportedly a priority for Fox 2000, which is in the process of hiring someone to rewrite the script. The story will span three decades, focusing not »

It has only taken a decade or so, but the children of The Blair Witch Project have come of age in the last couple of years, and found-footage horror is flourishing on big and small screens. A handful of direct Blair Witch knockoffs/spoofs notwithstanding, the vérité form has only really been embraced very recently by fright filmmakers, ranging from old masters (George A. Romero with Diary Of The Dead) to genre-feature first-timers (the Cloverfield gang), from foreign practitioners ([Rec]’s Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza) to those remaking them (the Dowdle brothers of Quarantine). While the first-person approach can give screen terror an immediacy that traditional filmmaking styles cannot, it also carries the limitation of restricting what the audience-surrogate characters can plausibly capture on their cameras.
Home Movie, the writing/directing debut of actor Christopher Denham, doesn’t quite get over that hurdle, but for a lot of its running time, »

Debuted atop the North American box office, "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" experienced one sunny weekend. Meeting industry expectation that projected it to earn around the $25 million-$30 million range, this new 3-D animated family comedy has pulled in an estimated $30.1 million in total since it opened Friday, September 18.
The children's book adaptation scored the highest-grossing September animation debut on record. The $30 million bow topped Sony's other animation film, "Open Season", which collected $23.6 million during its first three days weekend in 2006. In the overall highest-grossing September opening rank, "Cloudy" was third behind "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Rush Hour".
Screened in approximately 4,500 screens at 3,119 sites, the movie managed to draw kids and their parents despite the fact that schools are back in session. Nearly $18 million worth of ticket sales from "Cloudy" tally came from 3-D presentations at 1,828 sites, proving that 3-D is a significant draw for moviegoers. Commenting on the strong opening, »

Prelude To a Kiss (1992) Dir. Norman Rene Rom-com sweetheart Meg Ryan (Serious Moonlight [Tff '09], You've Got Mail, When Harry Met Sally) is in her element as Rita Boyle. Quirky and free-spirited, Rita was born to a wealthy family, only to join the Socialist party (unbeknownst to her parents). Despite her beauty, youth, and health, Rita holds a very pessimistic view of the world. Alec Baldwin (30 Rock, My Sister's Keeper, The Good Shepherd, Running With Scissors) is Peter Hoskins, a slightly-timid-yet-charming man who quickly falls for Rita despite her strange ideas about the world. The couple forms an endearing pair, and it all plays out very nicely, very by-the-book romantic comedy. That is of course, until their wedding day, when an eccentric, elderly man named Julius (played by Sydney Walker) crashes the wedding and requests a kiss from the bride before he continues on his way. Seeing some kind of spark ... »

Steven Soderbergh has never been one to take a lot of time off in between projects. Last year he completed his two-part epic Che (which still has yet to be released on DVD), and just a few months later his follow-up film The Girlfriend Experience was screening at Sundance. Now we've already got a trailer for his next movie, a corporate comedy/thriller called The Informant starring Matt Damon. When I first heard about this movie, for some reason I thought it was going to be more of a straight up espionage flick (maybe it's just that Damon's look with the glasses reminded me of The Good Shepherd), but it's definitely got a strong satirical edge to it. The fact that it's a true story also interests me. In a way this feels like Soderbergh's response to The Coen Brothers' Burn After Reading, and it will probably also be a »

Brazilian-born composer Marcelo Zarvos slowly but surely makes his steps in the world of film music by gathering better and bigger credits. Having parallele careers in jazz and film music, Zarvos' first commercially released score was written for the Kim Basinger / Jeff Bridges drama The Door in the Floor. Since then, he worked on the nostalgic Hollywoodland and started collaborating with Robert De Niro on The Good Shepherd and the satiric What Just Happened. Zarvos He recently completed Taking Chance (released by Varese Sarabande) and by the time you read this, Lakeshore Records has already released his score to Sin Nombre.
What was the situation of film and film music in Brazil when you grew up?
Brazil's film industry has had many ups and downs and when I was growing up there wasn't much going on. The renaissance of Brazilian film really only happened in the 1990's when I »

The 2-Disc Criterion Collection Blu-ray reviewby Peter Dimako, Editor A compelling, superbly acted and meticulously-directed project now sees release on Blu-ray. I have always admired David Fincher as a director; the Colorado-born helmer is responsible for such films as “Alien³,” “Panic Room,” “Fight Club” and the most recent “Zodiac” with Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. It’s good to see the talented Julia Ormond returning the screen in quality films once again. Here she takes the part of Caroline, a middle-aged woman supporting her mother Daisy (Cate Blanchett) in her last ailing days at the hospital. She’s asked to read a story and thus unfolds a remarkable telling of a man “Born under unusual circumstances.” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” is a strange case indeed; a child, born of old age, shriveled and exhibiting signs of a man on death’s bed, suffering from bad »

He may not be with us any longer, but he certainly left his mark on generations of children in Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood!
