Another great installment of this Nintendo franchise; this time taking a different style of play.Never since the Zelda II: The Adventure of Link has the overall play of Zelda changed; but The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is different to most of the past games in the franchise. For a start; the story takes place after the original Princess Zelda land of Hyrule and the brave efforts of Link. It is said that Link vanished into thin air in the past and when evil stuck the land again; the people had no choice but to pray to the gods. What happened to that kingdom is unknown .. (From the previous games)But the legend of Link (the young boy dressed in green) survived on the `wind's breath'; and was carried down for generations. So much so that every boy (when turned a particular age) was dressed in green; hoping that the boy would become what Link had.Fast-forward to the future; a cute little boys' sister is kidnapped by some wild creature-like bird. This kid who is given traditional green clothing is set on rescuing his beloved sister and so begins his quest The new style cell-shaded style graphics are wonderful! There's hardly any difference between watching a cartoon! It's really is that great. Controlling Link around the environment is breath-taking.The sound effects and music is what you expect from Nintendo; solid; and very appropriate. The gameplay is exceptionally great. Despite this title looking very different to the previous game; it DOES feel like a Zelda game. The main elements of the gameplay is sailing from island to island completing tasks, talking to the island folk, finding a way into something or getting past something that's blocked, exploring dungeons and collecting the item you need to move on ahead in your quest. Again from Nintendo the design of how all this is done is exceptional! The controls are always laid out in the top right-hand corner and should be simple enough; even more so because all gameplay instructions are given in-game. Mature gamers will find this game easy; with only a few baffling moments. The biggest drawbacks are when in battle (yes, this is a common one for 3D games!) the camera angles may be bad and you may not get enough time to adjust it using the C-Stick before you are attacked. Also despite the fair amount of moves given; the battles just seem on bashing the A button to swing your sword; very rarely do you actually need to use the R button to shield yourself from attack. So there you have it; certainly not the best Zelda game ever in terms of gameplay; but fun and fans of the series will love it; as will some newcomers. Overall, flawless graphics and sound, gameplay great but falls way on the easy side of things. An essential Nintendo Gamecube purchase!
