Fallen 'Idol' Still On Top
14 May 2008 (StudioBriefing)
Even though it drew its lowest ratings in five years, last Tuesday night's American Idol still was the second-most watched show of the week last week, beaten only by the Wednesday-night edition of Idol, which drew its lowest numbers in three years. For a May sweeps week, it might as well have been June. Except for the two Idol shows, none had enough appeal to draw more than 20 million viewers. (There was a time when all of the top-ten shows during a sweeps week routinely attracted 20 million viewers or more.) CBS remained the nation's most-watched network again last week, averaging a 6.7 rating and an 11 share (or about 10.6 million viewers). ABC placed second with a 6.2/11. Fox followed with a 5.5/9 (although it continued to top the list among adults 18-49); NBC remained last among the major networks with a 4.0/7.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 13.9/21; 2. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 12.6/20; 3. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 12.0/18; 4. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 11.7/19; 5. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 11.4/17; 6. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 10.5/16; 7. Without a Trace, CBS, 9.8/16; 8. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 9.7/15; 9. CSI: Miami, CBS, 9.5/16; 10. NCIS, CBS, 8.9/14.

Sweeps Swept By Low Ratings
7 May 2008 (StudioBriefing)
It certainly didn't look like a sweeps week last week as many ordinarily top-rated television shows recorded some of their lowest ratings ever. Even the No. 1 show, American Idol, saw a worrisome drop in audience figures. The Associated Press observed that CBS's CSI: Miami had its smallest audience ever. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation drew its second smallest audience ever for an original episode. (The smallest audience was recorded a week earlier.) ABC's Grey's Anatomy recorded its smallest audience since moving to Thursday nights two years ago. NBC's Deal or No Deal had its third smallest audience. For the week overall, CBS continued to lead with an average 6.5 rating and an 11 share. ABC placed second with a 6.0/10. Fox came in third with a 5.7/10. (It ranked first among adults 18-49, however.) And NBC tr ailed with an average 4.3/7.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 14.5/23; 2. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 13.6/21; 3. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 11.8/18; 4. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 11.4/17; 5. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 11.1/17; 6. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 10.8/17; 7. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 10.2/16; 8. NCIS, CBS, 9.4/15; 9. CSI: Miami, CBS, 9.2/15; 10. House, Fox, 8.8/13.

CBS Up; CBS News Down
30 April 2008 (StudioBriefing)
Thanks in large measure to the success of new episodes of its Thursday-night lineup, CBS recaptured the weekly primetime ratings crown last week. But the news wasn't all good. Ratings for the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric fell once again to a new record low as it averaged just 5.34 million viewers (3.7 rating and an 8 share), with analysts predicting that it will decline even further as recent firings of top news personalities at local CBS stations in key markets draw audiences away from those stations, undercutting their lead-in strength for the Couric newscast. By contrast, NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams attracted 8.02 million viewers (5.5/12) edging out ABC's World News with Charles Gibson, which averaged 7.79 million viewers (5.4/12).

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 14.2/22; 2. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 13.7/21; 3. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 11.7/18; 4. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 11.6/18; 5. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 10.7/16; 6. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 10.6/16; 7. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 10.3/16; 8. CSI: Miami, CBS, 9.3/15; 9. Without a Trace, CBS, 9.2/15; 10. NCIS, CBS, 9.1/14.

'Dancing' Dances Over 'House'
29 April 2008 (StudioBriefing)
Dancing With the Stars danced away with another ratings victory for ABC Monday night as a 90-minute edition averaged 17.92 million viewers, peaking in the final half-hour beginning at 9:00 p.m. with 18.97 million. That put it ahead in the overall ratings over Fox's House, which averaged 14.51 million viewers for the entire hour. Nevertheless, when it came to the all-important 18-49-year-old demographic group, House came out ahead. CBS took the lead at 10:00 p.m. with CSI: Miami, which drew 17.03 million viewers.

'Dancing' Deals 'Deal' a Blow
22 April 2008 (StudioBriefing)
ABC's Dancing With the Stars continued to dominate the Monday-night ratings as it posted an average 11.8 rating and a 16 share during its 90-minute telecast between 8:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Meanwhile on NBC, a two-hour edition of Deal or No Deal, which usually wins the night whenever Dancing isn't on the air, averaged a third-place 5.8/8 opposite Dancing, then zoomed to a first-place 7.3/11 at 9:30 when Dancing signed off. Taking over the lead at 10:00 p.m. was CBS's old standby CSI:Miami with a 9.7/16. For the night, ABC was the winner with an average 8.8/14. CBS came in second with a 7.3/11. NBC followed with a 6.3/10, while Fox trailed with a 5.3/8.

CBS Lets 'Secret' Out
11 April 2008 (StudioBriefing)
CBS ensured that Secret Talents of the Stars will remain a secret by yanking the show just three nights after it debuted on Tuesday in Jericho's former time slot. The show had posted a 3.2 rating and a 5 share, representing about a third of the audience that tuned in a week earlier for the conclusion of a CSI: Miami two-parter and three-quarters of the audience that tuned in two weeks ago for the series finale of Jericho.CBS said that it plans to air its magazine show 48 Hours Mysteries in the time period for the next two weeks, then turn it over to its returning legal drama Shark.

With All-New Episodes, CBS Rises to the Top Again
9 April 2008 (StudioBriefing)
Even with its Tuesday and Wednesday editions of American Idol averaging more than 25 million viewers, Fox was unable to walk away with another weekly victory in the ratings. Rising out of the ashes of the recent writers' strike, CBS came roaring back with a new episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation on Thursday drawing 20.6 million viewers. In fact, six of the top ten shows of the week aired on CBS. The four exceptions: the two Idol episodes and two editions of ABC's Dancing With the Stars.CBS averaged a 7.2 rating and a 12 share for the week, well ahead of Fox, which scored a 5.9/10. ABC finished third with a 4.9/8, while NBC trailed with a 4.2/7.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 14.8/22; 2. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 14.7/23; 3. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 13.0/20; 4. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 12.4/20; 5. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 11.1/17; 6. CSI: Miami, CBS, 10.1/16; 7. Without a Trace, CBS, 9.7/17; 8. CSI: Miami (Tuesday), CBS, 9.1/15; 9. NCAA Basketball Championships (Saturday), CBS, 8.8/16; 9. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 8.8/13.

'Idol' and 'Dancing' Repeat
2 April 2008 (StudioBriefing)
Ratings results last week looked pretty much like they did the week before, with Fox's American Idol claiming the first two spots in the Nielsen top ten and ABC's Dancing With the Stars taking the next two spots. In fact, their margin of victory appeared so great that it appeared likely that they would continue to claim those rankings while both of them remained on the air this season. Only two scripted shows finished in the top ten, CBS's CSI: Miami, which finished fifth, and CBS's Two and a Half Men, which finished eighth. Overall, CBS won the week with a 6.1 rating and a 10 share. Fox followed close behind with a 5.9/10. ABC placed third with a 5.7/9, while NBC trailed with a 5.1/8. Meanwhile, on cable, Nickelodeon's Kids Choice Awards telecast reportedly averaged 7.4 million viewers on Saturday, making it the most-watched show on cable for the week. It was also the top program on all of television for children.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 15.2/24; 2. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 14.0/21; 3. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 13.0/20; 4. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 11.0/17; 5. CSI: Miami, CBS, 10.3/17; 6. NCAA Basketball Sunday (Postgame), CBS, 8.9/16; 7. 60 Minutes, CBS, 8.7/14; 8. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 8.6/13; 9. The Celebrity Apprentice, NBC, 7.7/13; 10. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition ABC, 7.5/12.

April Madness?
1 April 2008 (StudioBriefing)
With all No. 1 seeds making it to the Final Four in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, CBS is hoping that ratings for March Madness will be given a significant lift in April. They are down an average of 7 percent from the same number of games a year ago. In a conference call on Monday, CBS Sports officials blamed the number of "blowout" games that appeared settled long before the end of the broadcasts for the audience erosion -- something that is not expected to happen with the top teams vying for the championship. Meanwhile, without basketball Monday night, CBS scored strongly with its old stalwarts Two and a Half Men, which drew an 8.7 rating and a 13 share, and CSI: Miami, which posted a 10.1/17. The New Adventures of Old Christine also had one of its best nights, drawing an 8.1/12. But a 90-minute edition of ABC's Dancing With the Stars wiped out all the competition as it averaged a 12.9/20. In the end, ABC drew the most viewers overall for the night; CBS drew the most viewers among adults 18-49.

'Dancing' Wins More Ratings Stars
25 March 2008 (StudioBriefing)
ABC's Dancing With the Stars danced away predictably with ratings honors Monday night, scoring a 12.7 rating and a 20 share in the 8:00 p.m. hour, rising to a 13.2/20 at 9:00 p.m. An appearance by Britney Spears on CBS's How I Met Your Mother gave that show a ratings boost as it posted a second-place 6.3/10 at 8:30 p.m. NBC continued to struggle with a minuscule 2.7/4 for its My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad in the same half hour. CBS took over the lead at 10:00 p.m. with the first new episode of CSI: Miami since the writers' strike posting a 10.2/16.

Quick Restarts for CBS Sitcoms
14 February 2008 (StudioBriefing)
The cast and crew of How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men got word Wednesday that they were all blessed with the luck of the Irish -- that their shows will be the first to return to the CBS schedule with new episodes beginning March 17, St. Patrick's Day. The network also said that it plans to air new episodes of CSI: Miami and Cold Case on March 24 and March 30 respectively and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CSI: NY, Without a Trace, Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs in early April. NBC also announced some post-strike returnees but indicated that they would not air until April. My Name Is Earl, it said, will be the first back on April 3, to be followed by the rest of the Thursday-night lineup a week later. Meanwhile, analysts indicated that the strike had little effect on the balance sheets of the networks. "They've escaped pretty much unscathed," David Bank, entertainment analyst at ABC Capital, told MarketWatch.com, noting that ad rates at the network have remained strong despite the strike and despite the economic downturn. (At Fox they're up by double digits.)

Fox Has Its Best Week Ever
24 January 2008 (StudioBriefing)
Fox had its best week in history last week -- except for the weeks when it aired the Super Bowl -- as it took the top-five positions in the Nielsen ratings list and posted a 13.4 average rating and a 21 share for the week -- more than twice the rating of any other network. Final figures indicated that the NFC Championship, in which the New York Giants defeated the Green Bay Packers, drew 53.94 million viewers, a number unlikely to be beaten by any other program this year save for the Super Bowl. American Idol, which also overwhelmed, was less overwhelming than in previous years as the first night of the season drew 33.4 million -- down 11 percent from the premiere a year ago. CBS was the second-ranked network for the week, averaging a 6.3/10. NBC finished third with a 5.1/8, while Fox trailed with a 4.1/7.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. NFC Championship: Giants at Green Bay, Fox, 29.0/43; 2. NFC Championship (Post-Game), Fox, 21.6/33; 3. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 17.7/26; 4. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 16.7/25; 5. Fox NFC Championship (Post-Game), Fox, 13.1/21; 6. NCIS, CBS, 9.9/15; 7. CSI: Miami, CBS, 9.7/16; 8. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 9.1/14; 9. Deal Or No Deal (Monday), NBC, 9.0/14; 10. Without a Trace, CBS, 8.8/15.

ABC's 'Dance Wars' Wins Monday Battle
15 January 2008 (StudioBriefing)
The second week of ABC's Dance Wars produced solid results Monday as it averaged a 7.3 rating and an 11 share between 8:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., outperforming NBC's American Gladiators, which finished with a 5.8/9 in the 8:00 p.m. hour. NBC moved into first place in the 9:00 p.m. hour with its Deal or No Deal game show. A repeat of CBS's CSI: Miami at 10:00 p.m. turned out to be the highest-rated program of the night, as it scored a 10.0/16.

Dick Clark Still Rockin' on New Year's Eve
2 January 2008 (StudioBriefing)
Although his speech remained noticeably affected by the stroke that felled him in 2004, Dick Clark kidded co-host Ryan Seacrest and, as always, counted down the moments to 2008 in New York's Times Square Monday night. (The program actually made news when Mayor Michael Bloomberg told Seacrest that he would not run for president.) Orlando Sentinel TV columnist Hal Boedeker defended ABC's decision to bring Clark back each year despite his rather feeble appearance. "His presence offers several reminders," Boedeker wrote. "We're all growing older. We need to respect the aged. We're witnessing a TV icon setting a good example, growing old gracefully and not hiding." The primetime segment of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve (10:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.) landed in first place in the ratings, posting a 4.8 rating and a 10 share, beating reruns of CSI: Miami on CBS and Law & Order: SVU on NBC. It then went on to score an 8.8 rating/20 share from 11:30 p.m.-1:00 a.m.

CBS Wins Pre-Christmas Week
27 December 2007 (StudioBriefing)
During a pre-Christmas week of mostly reruns and light viewing, CBS took eight of the top-ten positions in the Nielsen ratings race. The other two were held by NBC. The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. CSI: Miami, CBS, 9.5/16; 2. NBC Sunday Night Football, NBC, 8.7/14; 3. 60 Minutes, CBS, 8.4//18; 4. NCIS, CBS, 8.2/14; 5. CSI: NY, CBS, 7.7/13; 6. Two and a Half Men (special), CBS, 7.5/12; 7. Criminal Minds, CBS, 7.4/12; 8. Biggest Loser 4, NBC, 7.2/11; 8. (Tie) Two and a Half Men, CBS, 7.2/11; 8. (Tie) Without a Trace, CBS, 7.2/14.

Xmas Eve Will Find You ... Away from TV
26 December 2007 (StudioBriefing)
Christmas eve turned out to be the lowest-rated night of the season (and perhaps the lowest-rated Tuesday of the year) as CBS won with an lowly average 3.2 rating and a 7 share. NBC ranked second with a 2.7/6, edging out ABC's 2.6/6. Fox trailed with a 1.6/4. Amazingly, the umpteenth rerun of 61-year-old It's a Wonderful Life finished first in the 8:00 p.m. hour and stayed a competitive second at 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. In fact the final hour of the Jimmy Stewart starrer drew a 3.1/7 rating, the second-highest rating of the night. (The highest-rated show was CBS's CSI: Miami, which registered a 4.0/9 in the same hour.) Audiences returned to their sets on Christmas Day with NBC's Deal or No Deal averaging a 6.1/12 between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., followed by a Law & Order: SVU repeat at 10:00 p.m., which drew a 5.2/10.

CBS Returns to Top Spot in Ratings
19 December 2007 (StudioBriefing)
Ratings for CBS's Survivor: China may have been considerably lower than those for past Survivor series but they were strong enough last week to give the network an easy win over its rivals. Daily Variety observed that Survivor was one of the rare shows to win its time period every week during the season both in total viewers and among adults 18-49. The network's numbers were overwhelming on Thursday as a new episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation drew 20 million viewers, followed by a Survivor: China episode, which captured 14.5 million. Finally, Without a Trace closed the night with 15.1 million. Meanwhile, in the nightly news race, NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams pulled out ahead of ABC's World News With Charles Gibson. After weeks of running neck-and-neck, the NBC newscast drew over 400,000 more viewers than ABC's, posting 9.30 million to ABC's 8.86 million. CBS Evening News With Katie Couric remained well behind with 6.82 million.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 12.5/19; 2. Without a Trace, CBS, 10.0/17; 3. NBC Sunday Night Football, NBC, 9.5/15; 4. ABC Wins November Sweeps Week
5 December 2007 (StudioBriefing)
ABC unseated CBS from its usual throne as the most-watched network last week. Among the key demographic group of adults 18-49, it held down all five of the top positions on the Nielsen ratings list. It was the best performance with regular programming by the network in more than a year. The top two shows among younger viewers were the season's final broadcasts of Dancing With the Stars, followed by the half-hour animated special Shrek the Halls. Sunday's Desperate Housewives came in fourth, while the classic holiday special How the Grinch Stole Christmas landed in fifth place. Overall, ABC averaged a 7.7 rating and a 12 share for the week. CBS placed second with a 6.8/11. NBC and Fox tied for third with a 5.2/8.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 16.1/24; 2. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 15.7/23; 3. 'Dancing' Sweeps to the Top
28 November 2007 (StudioBriefing)
Last week's penultimate Dancing With the Stars competition show on Monday night hoofed it to the top of the ratings as 22.85 million viewers tuned in. It marked the fourth time in the last five weeks that the show had topped the Nielsen list (and Tuesday night's finale is virtually certain to do the same when this week's results are tallied). Nevertheless, CBS once again remained the most-watched network overall for the November sweeps week, even though none of its shows finished higher than fifth. Thanksgiving week, during which ratings usually decline, thereby signaling a plethora of repeats, actually saw relatively little ratings erosion. NBC's Sunday Night Football game between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles drew 21.8 million viewers -- even as ABC's Desperate Housewives on the same night attracted 18.6 million. Ratings for the evening newscasts were actually up significantly for the week, with NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams attracting an average of 9.91 million viewers. ABC World News With Charles Gibson finished second with 9.03 million viewers, while CBS Evening News With Katie Couric placed third with 6.94 million viewers.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 14.7/22; 2. Sunday Night Football: New England Patriots vs. Philadelphia Eagles, NBC, 13.4/21; 3. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 13.0/19; 4. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 11.5/17; 5. NCIS, CBS, 10.8/17; 6. 60 Minutes, CBS, 10.5/16; 7. CSI: Miami, CBS, 10.4/17; 8. House, Fox, 10.0/15; 9. Criminal Minds, CBS, 9.6/16; 10. Samantha Who?, ABC, 9.5/14.1.

'Stars' Dances Back to First Place
21 November 2007 (StudioBriefing)
ABC's Dancing With the Stars, which was tripped up a bit last week by CBS when it aired a drama that began on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and concluded on Without a Trace, took the lead again this week. The network also scored strongly with Grey's Anatomy, Samantha Who? and the American Music Awrds, all of which landed in the top-20 list. Nevertheless, CBS placed 12 shows on that list, and wound up with a 7.7 average rating and a 12 share for the week. ABC placed second with a 6.8/11. Fox placed third with a 5.2/8, just edging out NBC with a 5.3/8. In the nightly news ratings, Nielsen Research called it a draw, saying that ABC's World News with Charles Gibson and NBC Nightly News tied with 9.08 million viewers. The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric was well behind with 6.67 million viewers.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 14.0/20; 2. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 13.3/20; 3. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 12.5/18; 4. Without a Trace, CBS, 9.5/16.

NFL Game Oddly Blacked Out -- In Ratings
7 November 2007 (StudioBriefing)
In its release of ratings for the week of Oct. 29-Nov. 4, Nielsen Media Research observed that the most-watched telecast of the week was Sunday night's 7:00 p.m. half-hour overrun of the New England Patriots-Indianapolis Colts football game on CBS, which drew a 19.3 rating and a 31 share. With 33.8 million viewers, it was also the highest-rated regular-season NFL game in 20 years. Curiously, however, the telecast was not even listed among Nielsen's top ten, which put ABC's Monday-night edition of Dancing With the Stars in first place in overall households (14.1/21) and ABC's Grey's Anatomy on top among adults 18-49. In households, CBS again finished first with an average 7.8/13. ABC was a close second with a 7.4/12 (and held the lead among the 18-49 demo). NBC placed third with a 5.0/8, while Fox, the previous week's winner as a result of its World Series coverage, dropped to last place with a 4.3/7.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 14.1/21; 2. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 12.6/19; 3. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 12.3/18; 4. 60 Minutes, CBS, 11.9/19; 4. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 11.9/18; 6. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 11.8/18; 7. NCIS, CBS, 10.4/16; 8. House, Fox, 10.3/15; 9. Sunday Night Football, NBC, 10.2/16; 10. CSI: Miami, CBS, 9.8/16; 10. Samantha Who?, ABC, 9.8/14.

No Misstep for 'Dancing'
7 November 2007 (StudioBriefing)
ABC didn't miss a beat with last night's (Tuesday) edition of Dancing With the Stars. The first hour of the show registered a 13.8/20, while the second hour (actually 45 minutes) managed a 13.4/19 -- more than a full ratings point ahead of last week. Nevertheless, they represented the highest-rated hours of the night and in each hour bettered the combined ratings of the other three networks. CBS won the 10:00 p.m. hour, however, with a solid 9.6/16 for CSI: Miami.

Mondays Are for 'Dancing'
6 November 2007 (StudioBriefing)
ABC again danced away with the ratings Monday night as its Dancing With the Stars recorded a 13.4 rating and a 20 share in the 8:00 p.m. hour and a 13.8/19 at 9:00 p.m., according to preliminary figures released by Nielsen today. (Due to technical difficulties, some major markets were not included in the initial results.) CBS took the 10:00 p.m. hour with CSI: Miami drawing a 10.6/17. In the same hour NBC's Journeyman appeared close to the end of its journey as it wound up with a 3.8/6.

Sox Rock Fox
31 October 2007 (StudioBriefing)
For the second week in a row, post-season baseball gave Fox a hefty lead in the ratings. Three of last week's top-ten winners were Red Sox/Rockies World Series telecasts, according to Nielsen Media Research. ABC's new Samantha Who? also proved to have strong running legs as it continued to produce the best ratings of any newcomer. Fox's House continued to generate big numbers as it topped ABC's Grey's Anatomy among younger viewers for the first time, thereby becoming the No. 1 drama in that demo. For the week, Fox led with an average 8.6 rating and a 14 share. ABC placed second with a 7.4/12, slightly ahead of CBS with a 7.2/12. NBC trailed with an average 4.4/7.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 13.7/20; 2. MLB World Series Game 4, Fox, 12.6/21; 3. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 12.2/18; 4. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 11.8/18; 4. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 11.8/17; 6. MLB World Series Game 2, Fox, 11.1/18; 7. NCIS, CBS, 10.9/17; 8. House, Fox, 10.8/16; 9. MLB World Series Game 1, Fox, 10.5/18; 10. CSI: Miami, CBS, 10.4/17.

Baseball Hits One Out of the Park for Fox
24 October 2007 (StudioBriefing)
The American League Championship Series playoff games, which went the full seven games and ended with the Boston Red Sox overcoming a three-game-to-one deficit against the Cleveland Indians, made ratings champions out of Fox last week. Last week's five telecasts averaged 13.14 million viewers, giving Fox its first weekly ratings victory in the fall season since 2004 when the Red Sox scored another comeback win to defeat the New York Yankees. (Even without baseball, Fox performed well last night -- Tuesday -- as House returned after a one week absence with a 10.7 rating and a 16 share. Although slightly behind ABC's Dancing With the Stars in households, House was slightly ahead in total viewers and well ahead in adults 18-49.) Last week's Nielsen ratings also revealed that ABC's Samantha Who? had become the season's most-watched premiere with 14.42 million viewers. For the week, Fox ranked first with an average 7.5 rating and a 12 share. CBS and ABC tied for second place with a 7.1/12, while NBC trailed with a 5.3/9.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 12.9/19; 2. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 12.8/19; 3. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 12.0/18; 4. CSI: Miami, CBS, 10.5/17; 9. Samantha Who?, ABC, 9.9/15; 10. Criminal Minds, CBS, 9.5/15.

CBS Stays Ahead in Ratings But ABC Dances Closer
17 October 2007 (StudioBriefing)
CBS's old standbys overshadowed new programming on rival networks as it captured 10 of the top-15 positions on the Nielsen ratings chart. But ABC gave it a close run for the money thanks mostly to oversized ratings for Dancing With the Stars, Grey's Anatomy, and Desperate Housewives. CBS averaged a 7.9 rating and a 13 share for the week, while ABC placed second with a 7.2/12. NBC was a distant third with a 5.2/9, while Fox trailed with a 4.9/8.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 12.8/19; 2. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 12.4/19; 3. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 12.3/19; 4. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 11.8/18; 5. 60 Minutes, CBS, 11.3/17; 6. House, Fox, 10.8/16; 7. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 10.7/16; 8. NCIS, CBS, 10.4/17; 9. CSI: Miami, CBS, 9.6/15; 10. Criminal Minds, CBS, 9.3/14.

New TV Shows Fail To Draw Viewers
10 October 2007 (StudioBriefing)
There was something for each of the broadcast networks to boast about in last week's Nielsen ratings race. CBS once again attracted the most viewers, but ABC and NBC tied for a win among the advertiser-prized adults 18-49 demographic. Fox, meanwhile, saw another strong performance from House. Not a single new show landed in the top ten, however. For the week, CBS averaged a 7.3 rating and a 12 share, down 10 percent from the comparable week a year ago. ABC placed second with a 7.1/12, off 3 percent from last year. NBC continued to struggle with a 5.8/10, down 11 percent from last year. Fox trailed with a 4.3/7, plummeting 16 percent from last year.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 13.1/19; 2. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 12.8/19; 3. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 12.5/19; 4. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 11.2/17; 4. (tie) Sunday Night Football, NBC, 11.2/18; 6. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 10.4/16; 7. House, Fox, 10.3/16; 8. NCIS, CBS, 10.2/16; 9. CSI: Miami, CBS, 9.8/16; 10. Criminal Minds, CBS, 9.5/15.

'Dancing' Light on Its Feet; Other Shows Stumble
9 October 2007 (StudioBriefing)
ABC's Dancing With the Stars continued to dominate on Monday night, averaging a 12.8 rating and a 19 share between 8:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Many of the shows on other networks, however, saw significant ratings erosion. CBS's Two and a Half Men at 9:00 p.m. dropped to an 8.4/12, down 24 percent from the comparable Monday a year ago. Likewise, the network's CSI: Miami was down 18 percent to a 10.1/16. NBC's new comedy Chuck saw its ratings decline to a 4.9/7 following its debut two weeks earlier with a 6.4/10. The network's new Journeyman dropped to a 4.8/7, a 29-percent plunge from its opening week.

ABC Dances to First-Week Victory
3 October 2007 (StudioBriefing)
ABC, which stumbled on the comeback trail last season, strode to the head of the pack in the first week of the new season, landing at the top of the Nielsen ratings lists among both overall audiences and adults 18-49. The network got a big lift from Grey's Anatomy and Dancing With the Stars, with Grey's the top-rated show among young adults and Dancing taking second-place honors among the overall audience. ABC's Private Practice was the highest-rated new show of the season in the overall rankings, while NBC's Bionic Woman topped the list among 18-49-year-olds. Meanwhile, it was announced that the Disney Channel, ABC's corporate sibling, rose to the top of the ratings among cable channels during the third quarter, thanks mostly to the success of High School Musical 2, Hannah Montana, and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. The Disney cable outlet also continued to draw solid ratings for each repeat of the original High School Musical.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 14.9/23; 2. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 13.5/20; 3. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 13.2/20; 4. Dancing With the Stars (Wednesday), ABC, 12.2/19; 4. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 12.2/18; 6. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 11.1/18; 7. Without a Trace, CBS, 10.9/18; 8. House, Fox, 10.7/16; 9. CSI: Miami, CBS, 10.0/16; 10. Heroes, NBC, 9.9/14.

'Dancing' Dominates; 'Bang' Fizzles, 'Chuck' Chokes
2 October 2007 (StudioBriefing)
The second week of ABC's Dancing With the Stars once again dominated Monday night's ratings as it drew a solid 13.2 rating and a 19 share between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Those numbers were down only slightly from last week's season premiere, which recorded a 14.0/21. Dancing had little competition from its rivals in the 8:00 p.m. hour, with CBS's combination of How I Met Your Mother and the new The Big Bang Theory averaging a 5.8/9. At NBC, the new action comedy Chuck tied the CBS shows, down nearly 10 percent from a week ago. But at 9:00, NBC's Heroes performed strongly among adults 18-49, eking out a slight ratings win in that demographic group over Dancing. At 10:00, NBC's new Journeyman captured a respectable 6.8/11 tying for second place with ABC's The Bachelor. CBS continued to own the hour, however, with CSI: Miami registering an 11.0/17.

ABC Hot to (Fox) Trot on Monday
25 September 2007 (StudioBriefing)
ABC waltzed away with a ratings victory on the first Monday of the new season, thanks to a strong performance by the season premiere of Dancing with the Stars. The 90-minute show recorded a 13.4 rating and a 21 share during its first hour at 8:00 p.m., peaking at 9:00 p.m. with a 13.7/21. But viewers deserted the network when a 90-minute version of The Bachelor came on at 9:30 p.m. The first half-hour drew only a 7.2/11, then dropped to a 6.3/10 during the 10:00 p.m. hour. Meanwhile, the premiere of Chuck on NBC wound up in second place with a 6.0/9 at 8:00 p.m. At 10:00 p.m. the debut of NBC's time-traveling Journeyman registered a 5.9/10, walloped by CBS's CSI: Miami, which opened the season with a 9.8/16.

NFL Crushes Emmy
19 September 2007 (StudioBriefing)
In past years, a gentlemen's agreement by the networks removed heavy competition from whichever network was airing the Emmy awards. The result was that the awards ceremony was generally one of the highest-rated shows of the year. Not so these days as the Emmy telecast was forced to compete Sunday against an overrun of a CBS NFL telecast and later NBC's Sunday Night Football -- and was thrown for its biggest loss since 1990. Final weekly ratings figures from Nielsen Research showed that Sunday night's telecast drew 13 million viewers, down significantly from last year when it drew 16.1 million. Last year's telecast had already been designated the second-lowest-rated Emmy affair in history. In fact, Sunday's show beat the 1990 telecast by just 700,000 viewers. (Some analysts pointed out that the earlier telecast aired less than four years after Fox went on the air and that the network had far fewer affiliates then than it does today.)

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. NBC Sunday Night Football, NBC, 9.8/16; 2. 59th Primetime Emmy Awards, Fox, 8.4/14; 3. 60 Minutes, CBS, 7.6/12; 4. Sunday Night NFL Pre-Kickoff, NBC, 7.2/12; 5. Without a Trace, CBS, 6.6/12; 6. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 6.4/10; 7. CSI: NY, CBS, 5.9/10; 8. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 5.8/10; 9. Big Brother (Thursday), CBS, 5.7/10; 10. CSI: Miami, CBS, 5.6/9; 10. Football Night in America, NBC, 5.6/10.

NBC Kicks Off Season at No. 1
12 September 2007 (StudioBriefing)
What a difference football makes for NBC's standing in the ratings. Two NFL games last week, on Thursday and Sunday, pushed the network to the top of the ratings list with an average 5.4 rating and a 9 share. Nevertheless, both games attracted significantly smaller audiences than the first games of last season did. CBS, the usual weekly winner, came in second with an average 4.6/8. Fox and ABC tied for third, each with a 3.6/6.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. Sunday Night Football, NBC, 11.6/17; 2. NFL Thursday Special, NBC, 11.5/17; 3. NFL Thursday Pre-Kick-Off, NBC, 8.8/15; 4. Sunday Night NFL Pre-Kickoff, NBC, 8.0/15; 5. 60 Minutes, CBS, 7.1/12; 6. Without a Trace, CBS, 6.8/12; 7. The OT (postgame), Fox, 6.6/12; 8. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 6.5/11; 9. Football Night in America, Pt 3, NBC, 5.9/10; 10. CSI: Miami, CBS, 5.8/10; 10. NFL Opening Kick-Off Show, 5.8/10; 10. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 5.8/9.

Peacock Takes Swan Dive
6 September 2007 (StudioBriefing)
Last week, the average ratings for NBC programs sank to their lowest level since Nielsen's current method for determining audience size was instituted some 20 years ago. The network averaged just 4.17 million viewers per hour in primetime. Ratings among adults 18-49 also fell to a record low for the network. (Fox also recorded record lows in that demographic group last week, while ABC tied its previous record low.) CBS led its rivals with an average 4.5 rating and an 8 share for the week. For NBC, It Was Almost Like "Must See TV"
29 August 2007 (StudioBriefing)
The final competition among the contestants on NBC's America's Got Talent, won by ventriloquist Terry Fator, drew 13.9 million viewers last Tuesday, making it the most-watched show of the week -- and of the entire summer. It also helped lift NBC to first place among adults 18-49, the group most courted by advertisers. Fox has held the top spot among that demographic group every week since last February but drew its smallest audience in two years, thanks in no small part to the debut of the network's Anchorwoman, which drew just 2.7 million viewers, the lowest-rated new show of the summer. It was canceled two days later. Still, CBS remained the favorite network overall as it averaged 6.9 million viewers for the week, translating to a 4.7 rating and an 8 share. NBC averaged 6 million (3.8/7), followed by Fox, with 4.7 million (3.0/5) and ABC with 4.5 million (3.0/5).

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. America's Got Talent, NBC, 8.4/14; 2. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 7.0/12; 3. Cable Show Outdraws All Network Shows
22 August 2007 (StudioBriefing)
NBC's America's Got Talent got No. 1 on the Nielsen ratings list last week, tying with CBS's 60 Minutes but edging out the news magazine in total number of viewers and beating it handily in the key 18-49 adults category. The show drew 10.83 million viewers. However, had cable shows been included in the list, the Disney Channel's High School Musical 2, which drew 17.2 million viewers on Friday -- the largest audience ever to watch a show on basic cable -- would easily have come out on top. Overall, CBS continued to chalk up wins for drawing more viewers to its primetime summer schedule than any other network. However, all of the networks remained in the summer doldrums for the week. CBS averaged only a 4.5 rating and an 8 share. Fox placed second with an average 3.8/7. NBC was close behind with a 3.5/6, while ABC trailed with a 3.0/5.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. America's Got Talent, NBC, 6.6/12; 1. 60 Minutes, CBS, 6.6/12; 3. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 6.4/11; 4. NBC Singing Praise of Talent Shows
8 August 2007 (StudioBriefing)
NBC continued to notch up the kind of ratings during the summer that it probably dreamed about getting during the regular season. Tuesday night's 90-minute performance episode of the network's America's Got Talent, combined with The Singing Bee on the same night proved to be a potent punch. Nevertheless, CBS remained the most-watched network during the week, even with a nearly full schedule of reruns. ABC, however, continued to struggle, with its nightly newscast turning out to be the highlight of its schedule. Indeed ABC World News With Charles Gibson produced higher ratings than any program on the network's primetime schedule. Overall, it was another week of dismal ratings, with CBS winning it with just a 4.4 rating and an 8 share. Fox placed second with a 3.5/7, edging out NBC's 3.5/6. ABC trailed with a 2.9/5.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. America's Got Talent, NBC, 6.7/12; 2. 60 Minutes, CBS, 6.1/12; 2. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 6.1/11; 2. NBC's a Must-See Again
25 July 2007 (StudioBriefing)
For one week, it must have seemed like 2004 again to NBC executives. After falling into the ratings cellar during the regular season, three of the network's summer shows landed in the top ten, with one of them, The Singing Bee, holding on to the No. 1 position for the second week in a row, according to Nielsen Research. (In its third outing last night, the show slipped significantly, coming in second for the night behind its lead-in, America's Got Talent.) Nevertheless, despite NBC's comeback, CBS remained the most-watched network overall for the week as it registered an average 4.3 rating and an 8 share. NBC was close behind with a 3.9/7. Fox placed third with a 3.5/6, edging out ABC's 3.2/6.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. The Singing Bee, NBC, 6.8/11; 2. America's Got Talent, NBC, 6.5/11; 3. Law and Order: SVU, NBC, 6.3/11; 4. 'Fifth Grader' a Smart Move for Fox
24 July 2007 (StudioBriefing)
Fox's Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? showed once again on Monday that it didn't need to ride the coattails of American Idol to garner top ratings. The show led the 8:00 p.m. hour with a 5.2 rating and a 9 share -- well above the 3.6/6 for ABC's Wife Swap and the 3.5/6 for the combined CBS's How I Met Your Mother and The New Adventures of Old Christine. Hell's Kitchen slightly improved Fox's ratings at 9:00 p.m. as it posted a 5.8/10 -- also good enough for first place in the hour. CBS took over first place at 10:00 p.m., however, with a 5.4/10 for a rerun of CSI: Miami.

Ratings Fizzle During 4th of July Holiday
11 July 2007 (StudioBriefing)
While network ratings for the 4th of July week have traditionally been lower than they are at any time of the year, last week's numbers were the lowest ever. CBS won the week with an average of just 6.27 million viewers. That translated to an average 4.3 rating and an 8 share for the week. NBC placed second with an average 3.3/6. Fox followed with a 3.0/6, while ABC could only produce a 2.8/5. Nevertheless, among adults 18-49, Fox emerged for the 22nd straight week as the No. 1 network.

Even With All-Reruns, CBS Wins
4 July 2007 (StudioBriefing)
Although it aired a virtually uninterrupted schedule of reruns last week, CBS remained the most-watched network overall. But NBC, the lowest-rated network during the regular season, rose to second place, thanks in large measure to America's Got Talent -- the No. 1 show of the week -- and the Concert for Princess Diana special. Fox also scored strongly with two editions of So You Think You Can Dance and its game show, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?. ABC, however, was left out in the cold, placing only one show in Nielsen's top 20 -- Wednesday night's unscripted The Next Best Thing, at No. 18. (The finale of Univision's Spanish-language La Fea Mas Bella ranked higher, coming in at No. 15.) In overall ratings for the week, CBS led with an average 4.6 rating and a 9 share; NBC placed second with a 3.7/7. Fox followed with a 3.5/6, while ABC trailed with a 3.0/6.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. America's Got Talent, NBC, 7.2/13; 2. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 6.6/11; 3. CSI: Miami, CBS, 6.2/11; 4. Network Ratings Plummet to Lowest Levels Ever
27 June 2007 (StudioBriefing)
It was the worst of weeks for the television networks last week as they produced some of their lowest numbers since the modern ratings system began some 20 years ago. Surprisingly, the top-rated show of the week was NBC's Monday-night edition of Dateline, the magazine show that has become mostly a place-keeper for shows that have been canceled. But Monday night's show in which Matt Lauer interviewed British princes William and Harry attracted 12.2 million viewers -- the largest number of viewers to tune in since an interview with Amber Frey, the girlfriend of convicted killer Scott Peterson, aired more than two years ago. NBC also scored with its Deal or No Deal game show, which pulled in 12.1 million viewers. Nevertheless, CBS once again led in the ratings with an overall 4.8 average and a 9 share. Fox placed second with a 4.2/8. NBC came in third with a 3.5/6, while ABC trailed with a 2.7/5.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. Dateline (Monday), NBC, 8.4/14; 2. America's Got Talent, NBC, 8.0/14; 3. Deal or No Deal (Monday), NBC, 7.8/14; 4. NCIS, CBS, 6.4/11; 5. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 6.3/11; 5. Law and Order: SVU, NBC, 6.3/11; 7. CSI: Miami, CBS, 6.2/10; 8. 60 Minutes, CBS, 5.9/12; 8. So You Think Can Dance (Thursday), Fox, 5.9/10; 8. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 5.9/10.

NBC's Got No. 1 Again
20 June 2007 (StudioBriefing)
NBC, which struggled during the regular season just to place any of its shows on Nielsen Research's top-ten ratings list, had the No. 1 show on the list for the second week in a row. The show, America's Got Talent, drew 11.82 million viewers. Among adults 18-49, Fox's Hell's Kitchen took top honors. Nevertheless, CBS won the week among overall households, thank
