Synopsis and Art: Xavier Gens' The Fallout

4 November 2009 12:18 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Director Xavier Gens, best known within the genre for Frontiere(s), is following up his harrowing little horror film (Hitman doesn't count) with a hearty slice of post-apocalyptic nuttiness, and we have some art and the plot crunch for you.

Synopsis

Director Xavier Gens follows his $99 million grossing ‘Hitman’ with The Fallout - a high concept post-apocalyptic thriller that opens with pandemonium and a chaotic sprint towards the basement of a New York apartment building, just moments before the city outside is decimated…

When a cataclysmic explosion devastates New York, eight strangers take refuge in the basement of their apartment building, a converted fallout shelter designed by their paranoid superintendent Mickey. With just three connecting rooms it’s barely big enough, but with stockpiles of food and water, the group are at least safe from the horrors outside, and they settle in and attempt to fathom the catastrophe that has »

Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (Film Review)

3 November 2009 3:27 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Note: This review does contain minor Spoilers

Cheerfully gory and revolting, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever is the fun sequel to Eli Roth's cult classic that recently made it's debut on the last night of Screamfest L.A.

Starting immediately after the events of the first film, Paul (top-billed Rider Strong in a two-minute cameo) climbs out of the creek with the virus eating away at him, and he's promptly mowed down by a schoolbus (hardly a 'spoiler', having been revealed in the film's marketing materials).

The bottled water company from the first film delivers drinks contaminated with the flesh-eating virus to a local high school, where likable John (Noah Segan) and his nerdy friend Alex (Rusty Kelley) attend class. John has an unrequited crush on Cassie (Alexi Wasser), but is afraid of her angry kickboxer boyfriend.

By the plot, you can see the sequel is a classic John Hughes movie set-up, »

Trailer: The Darkening Sky

2 November 2009 12:28 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

We first told you about Rider Strong (Cabin Fever)'s new flick The Darkening Sky way back in August, and now, just in time for Afm, the flick has gotten itself a brand spankin' new trailer.

Ezra Buzzington (Halloween 2, The Hills Have Eyes), Charley Rossman (Superbad, "CSI"), Sally Berman (Angels and Demons), Daniel Kirschner, and Lashan Anderson have all signed up to join Strong in Victor Bornia's new flick.

Synopsis

When an alien abduction nightmare is revealed to have been much more than a dream, a skeptical grad student studying the “modern mythology” of UFOs and ETs finds himself confronting an impossible reality involving shape-shifting extraterrestrials, implanted objects, organ harvesting, and humans possessed by a malevolent alien presence unlike anything he has ever heard about... All while dealing with a growing suspicion that he is somehow the center of the aliens' plan.

Horror Review: ‘House Of The Devil’

31 October 2009 11:30 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

House of the Devil is now playing in limited release. You can also access it on demand through many cable providers, and it is available to rent on Amazon.com.  So, just in time for Halloween, I give you this review.

If you are a fan of 80’s horror movies, you’ll probably be delighted by this movie. I fear that today’s fickle horror fan, who is accustomed to frenetic stylings à la the Saw franchise, will be bored to tears by this very deliberately paced thriller. College student Samantha (perfectly cast Jocelin Donahue) is desperate to get an apartment in order to get away from her slutty dorm roommate who feels free to have sex in their room all the time.  She finds an apartment, and a kindly landlady (scream queen Dee Wallace) who requires a modest deposit.

Samantha answers a dubious ad for a babysitter in order to make some cash. »

Horror Icon Lee Hates 'Obscene' Modern Horror

27 October 2009 3:01 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Horror movie icon Sir Christopher Lee has branded modern fright films "obscene".

The British actor, who was a regular in the cult Hammer horror films of the 1960s and 1970s, tells CNN that movies like the Saw franchise, The Hills Have Eyes, Halloween and Cabin Fever leave him feeling sick.

Lee says, "I find it quite nauseating what they do. The blood is all over the screen like an avalanche - the mutilation - dreadful things, and I just don't enjoy that."

The actor insists scary movies were much better when the blood and the gore weren't shown on screen: "What you don't see is far more frightening than what you do see."

Lee considers Roman Polanski's 1968 supernatural thriller Rosemary's Baby the scariest film he's ever seen. »

We’ve been telling you about The House of the Devil, the buzzy new horror film hitting theaters on Friday. Well, the film’s rising director Ti West (he also helmed Cabin Fever 2) is getting in the Halloween spirit this week by offering a Web series, Dead & Lonely, on IFC.com. The project launched Monday and a new episode will be added each day through Friday (for a total of five, five-minute episodes). The story follows two single people in Los Angeles trying to find love on DateOrDie.net (what, was Match.com not depressing enough?). Oh, one of them happens to be a vampire. »

Excl: Ti West Takes Us into The House of the Devil

27 October 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Filmmaker Ti West has built up an interesting catalog of films within the horror genre over the course of the last several years. Having debuted with the impressive indie creature feature The Roost , then followed by the minimalist yet tense Trigger Man and eventually moving on to Cabin Fever 2 , West is back with his most ambitious effort, The House Of The Devil . The film follows college student Samantha Hughes, who is desperate to get out of her living situation and takes an odd babysitting job to help pay the deposit for her new pad. Unbeknownst to her, it also happens to be the evening of a rare full lunar eclipse, and her new employers aren't all that they seem to be. We sat down and chatted with Ti about the origins of the project, how he pulled off such an... »

Special Feature: Interview with the Cast and Crew of 'Cabin Fever 2'

26 October 2009 10:52 PM, PDT | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

While this weekend we brought you brief interview from BC, beyond the break you'll find a full-blown feature article for Lionsgate's Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever. Bloody Disgusting's Chris Eggertsen hit up the red carpet premiere of the event, which took place this past weekend as part of the Screamfest Horror Film Festival. 'Cabin Fever', Eli Roths stomach-churning homage to the exploitation horror films of the 70s and 80s, surprised industry observers in 2003 when it managed to gross over $30 million worldwide after being shot on a measly $1.5 million budget. At the time, it was a welcome change of pace from the tiresome post-'Scream' era of the late 90s/early 00s, where the teen characters invariably spouted irony-laden, self-conscious dialogue in films that began to feel less like horror movies than extended episodes of 'Dawsons Creek'. Why You Really Should Experience 'The House of the Devil'

26 October 2009 9:20 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

From its synth-heavy opening song and freeze-frame-filled beginning credits, Ti West’s The House of the Devil is a loving, respectful ode to the horror films of the 1970s and '80s. But don’t expect to get a warm, fuzzy feeling from all that affection; The House of the Devil is a gory, eerie film that doesn’t follow the templates set up by recent remakes of period favorites such as Halloween, Friday the 13th, and My Bloody Valentine. Instead of repackaging a familiar tale for contemporary audiences, director Ti West’s film revisits the era in a surprisingly fresh and authentic way.

Bearing a striking resemblance to Suspiria-era Jessica Harper, newcomer Jocelin Donahue plays Sam, a New England college student desperate for rent money so she can escape her roommate from hell. When she sees ads for a babysitter around campus, she thinks she may have found her salvation. »

Noah also talked up his character as a “sociopathic maniac” in his upcoming co-produced horror/comedy All About Evil, as well as hinted at some of the film’s bloodier moments. Check out the video below, as well as pics from the carpet.

Spreading the (Cabin) Fever!

26 October 2009 2:48 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Forget Swine Flu, the only illness you want to be innoculated against is the flesh-rotting sickness that spread through Cabin Fever!

When Cabin Fever opened in 2002, with it's audacious mix of horror, gore and comedy, it was a surprise hit. Introducing the world to Fango reader-turned-filmmaker Eli Roth and scream queens Cerina Vincent & Jordan Ladd, Cabin Fever got strong reviews and the cover of Fangoria. Even though it had an ending that left itself open for one in a genre that thrives on them, Cabin Fever never got a sequel... until now.

Seven years after the original, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever made it's world premiere at Screamfest Horror Film Festival at Hollywood's Mann Chinese 6 this past weekend. Directed by Ti West (House Of The Devil), it picks up where the original left off.

Screamfest La’s The House of the Devil Premiere Report

22 October 2009 2:10 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

This scribe hit Rachel Belofsky’s Screamfest La in Hollywood, CA, last night (as I do every night – extensive video and stills below), where Ti West, the director of The House of the Devil (review here) (screening as the fest’s "Centerpiece Film"), talked up his new series "Dead and Lonely", which begins airing on IFC Monday, October 26th, as well as the dust-up surroundng his Cabin Fever 2 (sort of).

Star of The House of the Devil Jocelin Donahue chimed in about her role in West’s legitimate recreation of early 80’s horror as seen in The House of the Devil , and Icelandic director Julius Kemp of the Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre (the film plays at Screamfest La tonight) spilled on the distribution of that film (which will be at Afm – hopefully American audiences will see it soon).

Eli Roth Returns to Horror and Tries His Hand at Sci-Fi

18 October 2009 1:16 PM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

It's been two years since Eli Roth directed a feature, but he's kept busy on the side with writing, producing, and acting. After his recent appearance as Sgt. Donny Donowitz in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, Roth is returning to horror, the genre that made him famous with his Cabin Fever and Hostel movies. He's also readying himself to take on science fiction.

At the Morelia International Film Festival in Mexico, Roth announced that he is finishing a script for a new sci-fi movie called Endangered Species, which he also plans to direct. He also mentioned that he's writing and directing a feature-length version of his Thanksgiving mock-horror trailer that appeared in Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's Grindhouse double-feature. Roth said that he needed the time away from directing to revive his creativity.

Something deadlier than swine flu is about to infect our nation's school systems. The virus from Eli Roth's Cabin Fever is spreading. And it's spreading fast in the Ti West-directed Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever . Remember those contaminated bottles of water from Cabin Fever ? The shipment's reached its final destination: a high school where the students will experience a prom night to remember - assuming they survive the night without succumbing to the flesh-eating virus or being shot by the government forces trying to contain the outbreak. Stuck in the middle of the mayhem are John (Noah Segan), his mouthy pal Alex (Rusty Kelley), and his childhood crush, Cassie (Alexi Wasser).
