Fall Frights: 28 Weeks Later (Film Review)

20 October 2009 12:15 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Originally published, 05/01/2007

Sequels aren’t supposed to be as good as 28 Weeks Later, which does what more follow-ups should, and so few do: It uses the concepts introduced in its predecessor as the spine for a fresh dramatic story, instead of simply rehashing the elements that made the original work. In so doing, it manages at numerous points to be every bit as scary and intense as the original, while maintaining an even bleaker and more uncompromising outlook. This is not the kind of cinematic second helping that hedges its commercial bets by scaling back the confrontational stuff.

28 Weeks Later was directed and co-scripted by Spain’s Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who won significant acclaim for his 2001 debut feature Intacto. I admired that film »

Catching Up With... The Hurt Locker's Jeremy Renner

4 August 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Ninety percent of all war movies can be summed up in three words: "War is hell." But for Jeremy Renner's character in The Hurt Locker, Staff Sargent William James, it's more than that. It's a purpose, a calling, and when he dons the suit—the bulky protective gear of the elite Explosive Ordinance Disposal (Eod) unit—it's also a rush. He's at his best when he's defusing bombs in Iraq. It's the rest of life that's difficult. Renner's intense portrayal has already earned him his second Independent Spirit Award Best Male Lead nomination (his first came in 2003 for his portrayal of the psycopath in Dahmer). He's also one of the stars of the new ABC series The Unusuals, and if the rumors are true, he'll be the new Mad Max. TV Review: ABC’s Quirky ‘The Unusuals’ Off to Promising Start

8 April 2009 10:15 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Television Rating: 3.5/5.0 Chicago – After the failure of the underrated “Life on Mars,” ABC brings another bizarre cop show to the same timeslot called “The Unusuals”. Like the program it’s replacing, this is an intriguing premiere, a show with serious potential that just needs a bit of tinkering behind-the-scenes to become appointment television.

ABC has thrown several new shows up against the wall to see what sticks, including “Castle,” “Better Off Ted,” “In the Motherhood,” “Cupid,” “Surviving Suburbia,” and, now, “The Unusuals”. With “Castle” treading water and still needing improvement and the other new entries disappointing, “The Unusuals” is the clear frontrunner of the bunch.

An odd mixture of zany comedy and grounded drama, a blend that still needs a little more time in the TV writing Cuisinart, “The Unusuals” is not your average NYC cop show. The personality disorder of this »
