Better than you think it will be..., 31 March 2003

Okay, this is a pauly shore movie, and it is actually good. It is a mockumentary about Pauly faking his death and getting caught and how his life/career go into a downward spin as a result.

SPOILERS BELOW, JUST TO WARN YOU

Anyway, what struck me about this is how it seemed that he has a sense of humor about his "weasel" days. The guy openly makes fun of himself and his movies. Maybe this is just a shallow attempt to re-invent himself, but more likely, i think he has a sense of humor and it's a mea culpa.

Funny bits involve running clips from Kurt Loder, E! TV as well as a subplot about an obsessed fan, it's all woven together pretty well.

Lots of cameos, I mean lots! Tommy Lee, Heidi Fleiss, Bill Maher, Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Vince vaughn, and Vern Troyer (mini me) just to name a few. In fact at times, all the celebs kind of took me out of the story, but in the end, it is pretty funny and well done.

Pauly openly mocks his Fox TV Show and ends up m,ore or less being saved by Todd Bridges, who is pretty funny as himself. Anyway, I don't know if a distributor will pick this movie up, but it should no doubt be on HBO or Showtime, where i think it would be very well-received. If you get a chance, check it out, even if you hated Pauly shore, yo might actually get a kick out of it.

An inspirational story, 5 February 2005

Pauly Shore is Dead is inspirational not because of the story it tells, but because of the story of the film and it's creator. I only bought the DVD on the most extreme suggestions of people I respected, due to my hatred of the man's previous performances. All I can say is that I was stunned.

Somebody that I viewed as talentless turned out a performance that is nothing short of classic. It's probably been 3 years or more since I laughed so much at a single movie. Everyone, from Pauly to every single cameo, makes fun of themselves. That is what makes this movie great. Whenever you see a celebrity, you know they are going to make fun of themselves and not try to put themselves over. That kind of selfless comedy is what makes this film great.

I guess sometimes people who get famous for shtick really are talented beyond what we have seen. This movie proves, to me, that in at least one case that is true.

You might be surprised..., 9 January 2007

First off, let me say that I was never a fan of Pauly Shore. In fact, I could never understand how it was even possible that someone this unfunny was able to have a career as a comedian, but hey ... Despite my claims of hatred, though, I still managed to watch everything he'd done, in some kind of a masochistic, painful cycle, and my hatred for him continued to grow and grow.

So it was inevitable that I would eventually catch 'Pauly Shore Is Dead', but what was surprising is how truly funny the film turned out to be. It's not perfect, by any stretch, and has a few moments that seem a little forced and even sentimental (such as the guardian angel visits), but all in all, I have to say this is one hell of a funny movie, and whether you like him or not, I think it would be hard not to admit some kind of respect for a man who is so willing to make fun of himself.

It is his sense of humor about himself that ultimately makes the film work, and I must admit that between the self-effacing plot line and the surprising amount of work that went into making the film, Shore has really gone up in my book. I still think he might be in the wrong line of business, but at least he's grounded enough in reality to realize that possibility as well.

Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys watching any celebrity spoof themselves, as the film is loaded with numerous amusing cameos. Also check out the deleted scenes, a highlight being the rendition of the song 'It's Been A While'. Check it out, and you may be as pleasantly surprised as I was.

Good work, Wiez!

It's always great to see someone who can laugh at himself, and even make fun of himself in ways that most people aren't brave enough to do. Pauly is totally exposing what has to be at least a little painful: His "has-been-ness". It's too bad this wasn't able to be released in theaters. My boyfriend even thought it was really funny, and he's always despised Pauly Shore's movies and "weasel" stuff. Many will also find it at least somewhat inspirational, his being so vulnerable and open. Lots and lots of familiar faces too, plenty of great cameos. It's hard to believe how many people came on board to help out with this project. Check it out, chances are you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Could have ended it at Jury Duty, 17 September 2005

Pauly Shore is one of the actors you love to hate; so much so that it got to the point where his whole career was based on people's dislike for him. But, Pauly Shore is Dead proves that it's not funny when he's in on the joke.

The film is a self-mockery, where Pauly Shore – played by himself – fakes his own death for credibility. Not a bad concept, but in the end just comes out arrogant and obnoxious. It certainly proves that Pauly Shore shouldn't have any control over direction or screenplays, as the jokes are stale, lame and predictable. The only way it holds itself up is by the various cameos.

Even though this is an obvious self-mockery, Shore seems to take himself very seriously to think people actually want to see him write and direct his own film, as if to say "hey, guys - I'm in on the joke too!" while looking down at his fans who are portrayed as obsessive rednecks.

Even though Pauly Shore clearly can't write, I think I'm one of the few that really enjoyed his early films. But, from early on to now, they're really went downhill: Encino Man: The first film where Shore had leading role. Easily his best film, and shows that it's probably best for him to be a secondary character.

Son in Law: Certainly no Encino Man, but still some funny moments.

In the Army Now: I'd stay away from this if you've seen Stripes and care about originality. Overall, pretty good film, though.

Jury Duty: His last watchable film. It really, really should have stopped there.

If it had stopped there, there would still be a few remaining strands of credibility left, but, unfortunately, he had to pull an arrogant and pretentious stunt by making Pauly Shore is Dead.

Pauly Shore uses his star power and career to carry this dark comedy., 26 March 2006
10/10
Author: gestl from United States

This movie deserves much more than the public is giving it. It shows that Pauly Shore is much more than the annoying character that we were all getting tired of. It shows that Pauly can act and make fun of himself (wich are two very hard things to do). Plus when Pauly really does die he will get similar treatment of Andy Kaufman when he died. Some people will spend all of their lives waiting for him to return and make a comeback. That is the kind of feat (if he does) that only one other comic genius has ever done. I personally hope that people take notice to how good this movie really is while Pauly is still with us. The star power alone in this movie should be enough to be worthy of something more than a 5 on the rating scale. If Mike Moore had directed this movie and through in a few cheep shots at President Bush, everyone would be bowing down to him in worship. But, because this movie was directed by Pauly Shore dumb asses all over the world immediately think its going to be the same old weasel crap. If you take time to watch this movie you will have more respect for Pauly and maybe laugh your ass off at the same time. That is why I believe this movie deserves a lot more than a 5 out of 10.

So Terrible it made me FURIOUS, 4 December 2005

Let me start by saying I have never had the urge to make a comment on IMDb yet - not for a great movie, and certainly not for a bad one. But this movie was so horrible I HAD to warn people.

I thought Pauly Shore was reasonably funny until this. Half of this movie isn't even trying to be humorous. It's Pauly Shore's desperate attempt at saving his career.

Yes there are tons of celebrity "cameos", but they are all so short, and I'd say maybe two of them are slightly funny. This movie plays as if it was written and directed by a no-talent former MTV "VJ". And it is.

best Pauly shore movie, 6 August 2008

Author: colinmcsloy from Here

That may be damning this thing with faint praise. However, this is one of the funniest flicks I have seen in a while and I think it is an indication of the perverse nature of IMDb that it didn't rate higher. If this had been scripted by Charles Kaufman then all you sports jacket wearing mofo's would be worshipping like some kind of object of worship.

Great performances, and the alternative ending on the DVD is even funnier than the one in the film. This gives you a real feeling that there is more to Pauly Shore than sub Bill and Ted Fare like Bio-dome and hopefully he will get some better projects as a result of this film.

I don't know whether this movie is extremely stupid or extremely clever. Probably both., 3 October 2005

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS STARTING IN THE 2ND PARAGRAPH.

As I said in my summary, this movie is like watching two different movies mixed up into one. If you can appreciate the movie for what it is (and I'm not sure I myself accomplished that with the first viewing), then you should actually find the movie to be pretty funny.

Half the story is your typical Wiezal fare- extra trite plot, courtesy-laugh jokes, Pauly blatantly mugging for the camera like a 10th grader who's never been on TV before. There's not much to say about this plot line except that it's basically about Pauly's #1 redneck fan who's seen Son in Law 200 times and is devastated at Pauly's "death." Then finds out it's a hoax, and sets out to kill Pauly himself as revenge for playing such a cruel trick.

The other half of the story is a jarringly clever commentary and satire about being a Q-list has-been actor in Hollywood, getting recognized by the great unwashed yet desperately trying to resuscitate a career that's more over than mall hair. The platitudes, the glad-handing, the hangers-on, the competition, and the fickleness of the industry are on display in all their banal glory. Pauly Shore's brutal analysis of his own career and downfall is hilariously harsh but refreshingly honest and dare I say it? Kind of deep. Pauly Shore commentary- deep? I barely believe it myself, but I think it could be so!

This part of the movie is chock-full of cameos which aren't only entertaining for the sheer celebrity factor, but hilarious once you realize that nearly every one of them is famous for some schtick they've either done or still do, famous for being famous, or heading down the road to formerly famous. Whoopie Goldberg, Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Paris and Nicky Hilton, Britney Spears, Carrot Top, Bill Maher, Charlie Sheen, Tommy Lee, Fred Durst, Jay Mewes, Verne Troyer, the list goes on and on. Not to mention the nice sprinkling of 15-minute famers and notorious characters like Kato Kaelin, Rico Suave, Heidi Fleiss, and Todd Bridges in hilariously self-deprecating parts. You have to give all these guys credit for having a pretty darn good sense of humor about themselves.

Pauly Shore actually co-wrote this movie in addition to directing and starring in it. I guess that's why it's such a mixed message- it's about Pauly instinctively capitalizing on still being The Wiezal, yet also trying to separate himself from that character so he can be reinvented. Yet that's exactly the reason why the movie doesn't quite work. It tries to be a clever satirical movie but hedge its bets as a Wiezal movie, but neither is quite enough.

So, Pauly, a message about your latest direction: Your movie is still pretty retarded, but I think you're really onto something. But next time, if you really don't want us to think you're The Wiezal, then don't put The Wiezal in your movie. Pauly Shore's not dead. The Wiezal? Dead.
