As Rumors of a "Southland" Save Continue, Some Bloggers Blame Gay Content for Demise

27 October 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Rumors continue to swirl that Southland is going to be picked up by TNT. And it makes sense – Southland is a Warner Bros. Show, and TNT is a Warner Bros. network, so there are some obvious cost synergies. Plus, TNT has had some success with police shows – The Closer, Dark Blue, and Saving Grace all come to mind.

It would also be extremely unusual for a broadcast show to be saved by cable. Then again, NBC wiping out their entire 10 p.m. block of scripted television in favor of Jay Leno was unsual, too. And not having a late slot for the gritty drama is what killed Southland.

Most rumors put the show back on the air this year with TNT's plan being to take advantage of what’s left of the fall premiere promotional buzz that NBC got for the show. The network would lump the seven episodes from »

Southland Might Be Heading to TNT

13 October 2009 11:08 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Last week, in a somewhat surprising move, NBC stopped production on the gritty cop drama Southland and canceled the sophomore series before airing a single episode of the six episodes it had already filmed.  The show's executive producer also seemed shocked and vowed to search for a home for his ground-breaking series on another network, and they just may have found one.  TNT has not only showed some interest in picking up Southland, sources indicate that talks between the two sides have begun and are advancing.

This is fantastic news for fans and gives some hope that such a fantastic scripted drama won't be lost due to the ignorance of NBC.  And as it turns out, TNT is closer to Southland than one might have thought.  Southland is produced by John Wells Productions and is a part of parent company Warner Bros. TV, which is also the corporate parent for the network TNT. »

Southland to Continue on TNT?

12 October 2009 12:05 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

A recently canceled NBC drama might live on with a cable network. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Southland might have found a new home at TNT.

It was reported that talks between the network and Warner Bros. TV, which produces the show, were advancing. Only six episodes of the series' second season were produced and none of them had aired on NBC yet, as its season premiere was slated for an October 23 debut.

TNT is no stranger to the police drama with the network's biggest hit being the police show The Closer and its most recent series, Dark Blue, a cop drama as well.

We'll be sure to keep you posted on whether or not a deal is struck for Southland to air on TNT as soon as we have more information.

Billy Bob Thornton Goes Pound for Pound

According to the trades, Billy Bob Thornton has signed on to star in Pound for Pound, a boxing drama based on a novel from F.X. Toole. Ron Shelton (Dark Blue, Tin Cup) is attached to write and direct. The project centers on the parallel lives of a retired and widowed boxer beset by depression after his grandson is killed in a car accident and an up-and-coming teenage Latino fighter from a difficult background. The lives of the two intersect in unexpected ways. Thornton will play the retired boxer, while producers are out to cast on the younger role. Toole, the pen name for the late boxing cutman Jerry Boyd, gained fame two years after he died when the stories in his collection "Rope Burns," became the basis for the Clint Eastwood-Paul Haggis drama "Million Dollar Baby." SyFy Channel Renews Warehouse 13

20 August 2009 7:32 AM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

SyFy channel has ordered a 13 episode second season for Warehouse 13. In its first season, Warehouse 13 rose to the top of the cable channel's offerings, becoming its most watched original series ever – surpassing even Battlestar Galactica. Warehouse 13 seems to fill the void for 'fun' science fiction, offering quirky episodic stories with an easy-going mythology that doesn't demand the level of scrutiny and dedication as shows like Lost.  This simple formula has struck a chord with fans, who are no doubt rejoicing at the renewal.  The second season will reunite the current leads Eddie McClintock, Joanne Kelly, Saul Rubinek and Allison Scagliotti. Warehouse 13 season one will air its finale on September 22 at  9pm Et/Pt with guest stars Ch Pounder (The Shield) and Roger Rees (West Wing).

Here are some quick facts from SyFy on Warehouse 13's various milestones:

Hawthorne Gets a Season Two

10 August 2009 6:10 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Despite very negative reviews, TNT has renewed fledgling medical drama Hawthorne for a second season. The show, starring Jada Pinkett-Smith as Christina Hawthorne, a Chief Nursing Officer at Richmond Trinity Hospital, will air the penultimate episode of its first season tomorrow night.

The show, one of TNT's nine current original shows, three of which started this year, has been recieved poorly by critics. The Boston Herald called the show "a mess," and the New York Post called the cast "flat and one-dimensional." It's been continually called "weakly written," and "unconvincing"  by many critics, and the titular protagonist has been criticized for being too much of an advocate. "She can’t always be in an uproar about everything or always play the hero. The show cannot center around her at the expense of everyone else," said Amy Amatangelo of Zap2it.

All that criticism really makes me wonder why exactly the show was renewed. »
