Brosnan's third Bond movie is a notch (just a notch) above his previous movie, the entertaining but shallow "Tomorrow Never Dies". This time around the plot is more complicated, characters are better defined, and situations are less predictable. The movie also marks a return to the griminess that defined films like "Dr. No" and "From Russia with Love". Brosnan kills in cold blood (in a realistic and quite mean manner), but the tone of the film is not too crude. In addition, the movie offers a few nice surprises, which I don't want to spoil. All I want to say is that the plot is strong, with lots of twists and turns. It is interesting to see so much of "M" (Judi Dench), and I even love how Samantha Bond handles the "Moneypenny" role (Samantha is a charming, clever and beautiful actress). Sophie Marceau has a terrific screen presence, and she commands the viewers' attention - it is inconceivable that she has not become a famous movie star. Unfortunately, Denise Richards almost ruins the second half of the movie with what I consider is the worst performance in a Bond film. I do not want to be too mean, but she cannot even run in a convincing manner. She is atrocious and the film suffers a great deal because of her awful performance. It is too bad, because Richards' mediocre work taints a lot of good scenes. This is "Q" 's last movie and he has one great exit line. I like how the title alludes to "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", which reminds audiences that we are dealing with the same character. I didn't like the title song, but I guess that is a matter of taste. Overall, the movie is rock-solid entertainment and recommended to action-oriented fans. Hardcore Bond fans will probably be less enthusiastic about the movie, mainly because of the ill-conceived casting of Richards in a pivotal role.
