The Good, The Bad And The Wtf: Sands of Not My Freakin' Dime

4 November 2009 1:09 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

It's the mid-week report of the good, bad and you-know-what-the-what here, as we compile the movie news from the past week and a half. Yes, you'll have more at the end of the week—but for now, let us all cringe together as we see stomach news of the 2012 motion sickness experience, an Mib without Will Smith, and the audacity of some people to shoot a barely visible topless scene and hype it up like it was Basic Instinct 3.

The Good

• For years, there have been several attempts to do a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, none of them ever came close to moving ahead. Speaking to MTV last week, director Robert Zemeckis set the record straight: that this time he is personally involved and really excited to do the sequel, and that he has commissioned original scribes Jeffrey Price and Peter Seaman to write the screenplay. Let's hope »

Matrix Producer to Tell the Story of Muhammad

3 November 2009 12:47 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Producer Barrie Osborne might be asking for trouble with this one. As anyone who watches Family Guy knows, visual depictions of the prophet Muhammad, the founder of the religion of Islam, are prohibited. This isn't explicitly stated in the Qur'an, there are a few traditions of Islam that forbid him from being depicted in a manner other than oral or written descriptions. Despite all of this, Osborne, who produced both The Matrix and the Lord of the Rings trilogies, is setting off on a quest to bring the story of Muhammad to the big screen. Budgeted at around $150m , the film will chart Muhammad's life and examine his teachings. Osborne told Reuters (via Guardian UK) that he envisages it as "an international epic production aimed at bridging cultures. The film will educate people about the true meaning of Islam." Osborne's production will reportedly feature English-speaking Muslim actors, and is backed by the Qatar-based production company Alnoor Holdings »

Seriously? Matrix Producer Wants to Make a $150m Biopic of Islamic Prophet Muhammad

3 November 2009 9:26 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

It's not every day I get to tag a /Film story with 'Muhammad'. So I guess I should thank evident crackpot producer Barrie Osborne, one of the men behind The Matrix and Lord of the Rings, because he wants to make a giant film about Muhammad. Yes, that Muhammad -- the founder and prophet of Islam. A couple of cartoons depicting his image were once enough to generate a global outcry. (Visual depictions of the prophet are forbidden by Islamic law in some sects.) How will things work out when a producer puts up twenty-four pictures of him every second? Poorly, which is why Muhammad will not be seen in the movie that depicts his life. In a way, this could be an interesting formal exercise: how do you make a movie about a person without ever putting them on screen? (Answer: get the Coen Brothers to make The Muhammed »

Hollywood Producer Barrie Osborne Making Muhammad Bio-pic

3 November 2009 8:27 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

American producer Barrie Osborne has done a lot of things right — producing “The Matrix” with the brothers Wachowski and the “Lord of the Rings” franchise with Peter Jackson, for example. That’s a pretty good resume right there, but apparently Barrie Osborne would like some controversy with his breakfast, because he’s planning what he calls an “international epic” bio-pic on Islam’s Prophet Muhammad. The International film, budgeted at $150 million, is aimed at “bridging cultures” and “[educating] people about the true meaning of Islam”. In a not-surprising twist, the movie will not actually show the Prophet or his family (in accordance with Islamic law), and will instead just show his effects on people and the world. Which begs the question: How do you make a bio-pic about someone’s life without showing that person? And if you can’t show the person you’re making a whole movie about, what’s the point? »

Lord Of The Rings Producer Making A Muhammad Movie

3 November 2009 12:16 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

If you know him, now might be a really good time to unfriend Barrie Osborne on Facebook. He.s a Hollywood producer, probably best known for his work on films like The Matrix and Lord of the Rings, and now he.s producing a movie which may make him the target of religious extremists. The Guardian says Osborne.s making a biopic about the prophet Muhammad. People have been murdered for simply drawing pictures of the Islamic religious figure, now just imagine how well his biopic will go over. Hell, I.m nervous just reporting on this movie.s existence. The comments second on this post will now inevitably fill up with people claiming Islam is a religion of peace, and that may well be true, but the world.s recent track record when it comes to depicting this particular dude isn.t exactly cheery. Still, Osborne has managed to »

Muhammad Movie Planned: Film Brings Together Hollywood Producer Barrie Osborne And Banned Muslim Cleric Sheikh Yousef al-Qaradawi

2 November 2009 1:53 PM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

A movie about the prophet Muhammad is in the works, according to Reuters. According to reports, the $150 million film will bring together a major hollywood producer and a Sunni imam banned from entering Britian. Producer Barrie Osborne, a producer of both The Matrix and The Lord Of The Rings is organizing the film. The Times reports that Sheikh Yousef al-Qaradawi will work as the film's theological consultant. Al-Qaradawi hosts a show on the Arab-language network al Jazeera. According to the BBC, Al-Qaradawi was denied entry to Britain in February 2008. The UK's Home Office said that it would not tolerate those who sought to justify acts of terrorist violence. The Times: [Al-Qaradawi] is also a highly controversial figure who was refused entry to Britain last year because of his views. He has reportedly condoned the Holocaust, supported the stoning of homosexuals... »

'Matrix' And 'Lord of the Rings' Producer To Make Movie About The Founder Of Islam

2 November 2009 11:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Oscar-winning producer Barrie M. Osborne is best known for fantastical films employing messianic characters, specifically "The Matrix" and the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Lately though, he's focusing directly on religious material rather than stories that reference those texts. Osborne is already at work on "Kingdom Come," a Biblical epic about the life of Jesus, which will be directed by "Lord of the Rings" visual effects artist Dean Wright. And now, according to The Guardian, he's planning a $150 million film about Muhammad, the founder of Islam.

Osborne's film, which will follow Muhammad's life from birth to death and His teachings, will not feature an on-screen depiction of the Prophet. The New Zealand-based producer is working with a production company out of Qatar and has employed Muslim scholar Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi to oversee the project throughout shooting. The producer told Reuters it will be "an international epic production aimed at bridging cultures. »

Review: Did you ever see… Assassins?

22 October 2009 1:11 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Cirque de Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant is unearthed this week. John C Reilly stars as a vampire who performs at the Cirque Du Freak. He meets a young boy, and agrees to take him on as an apprentice.

The screenplay is written by Brian Helgeland. I recognised the name, so i looked up his filmography. It turns out he has written the screenplay’s of many films, including La Confidential, Conspiracy Theory and Payback, having also directed the latter. And along with the Wachowski brothers (The Matrix), he has a screenplay credit for a personal favourite of mine. So join me as i look back at Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas, as they play Assassins.

I knew nothing of Assassins myself when it was released in 1995. It was only a couple of years later that i spotted it on video, intrigued by this movie i’d never heard of. »

Legendary action choreographer Yuen Woo Ping might be best known for his work on The Matrix and Kill Bill(s), but he's been a noted filmmaker in Hong Kong for decades (see Iron Monkey or Wing Chun for a sample of the man's capabilities). He hasn't spent too much time in Hollywood lately, getting back behind the camera and the kicking for old-school action (and sound effects!) in the period martial arts epic True Legend (Su Qi-er). 'Varsity Blues' Doesn't Want Your Life In Today's Sick Day Stash

14 October 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Call them "cult classics." "Guilty pleasures." "Comfort movies." We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that may not be terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. Here are some of ours.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that 1999 was a definite turning point in cultural history. The music of '99 was truly excellent (the entire year was soundtracked by Tlc's "No Scrubs," Kid Rock's "Bawitdaba," 702's "Where My Girls At?" and Rage Against the Machine's "Guerilla Radio"), television saw the beginning of its new golden age ("The Sopranos," "Futurama," "SpongeBob Squarepants," "Angel," "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "The West Wing" and "WWF Smackdown! »

Fight Club

Fight Club was a box office disappointment ten years ago, but it has gained a Huge cult following since - and it must have made an absolute mint on DVD. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton star in this David Fincher directed adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s now-famous novel. The film is another example of world perspective from a late 90s view point. »

James McTeigue Confirms Superman Involvement

1 October 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

FirstShowing caught up with director James McTeigue (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin) to ask him a few questions about the new Superman movie, which he has been rumored to helm and the Wachowskis (The Matrix) to produce. He first revealed that his involvement is not a rumor. "Maybe [there's] some truth to [it]," he said. "I've had some discussions, the Wachowskis to a lesser degree, but the Superman franchise is in a strange kind of place at the moment. I think they're still trying to work out the mechanics of how that can come together." Warner Bros recently lost rights to Superman's origins and two weeks ago, DC Entertainment head revealed that there are currently no plans to develop another installment. But that hasn't stopped McTeigue from talking about his plans for the reboot. "I think I would be interested in doing it if they let me do it the way I wanted to do it, »

Surrogates Review

26 September 2009 11:28 AM, PDT | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

In “Surrogates,” FBI agents (Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell) investigate the mysterious murder of a college student linked to the man who helped create a high-tech surrogate phenomenon that allows people to purchase unflawed robotic versions of themselves—fit, good looking remotely controlled machines that ultimately assume their life roles—enabling people to experience life vicariously from the comfort and safety of their own homes. The murder spawns a quest for answers: in a world of masks, who’s real and who can you trust?

Willis still takes a beating better than any action star in the business. But there are really only two significant action sequences in what’s otherwise a murder mystery set in a future world. Oh, and pretty much everyone now owns a surrogate robot body—usually a blandly prettier version of themselves—through which they can live vicariously, feeling everything good that the surrogate experiences, »

Blu-Ray Round Up: Jet Li, Jackie Chan Highlight ‘Ultimate Force of Four’

21 September 2009 8:56 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Attention martial arts fans, Buena Vista Home Video recently released a wave of martial arts films on Blu-Ray under the title “The Ultimate Force of Four” box set, including one of Jet Li’s best films, the spectacular “Hero,” from director Zhang Yimou. “Hero” is easily the highlight of the quartet of recent HD releases but “Iron Monkey,” “The Legend of Drunken Master,” and “Zatoichi” will all satisfy fans in 1080p (as long as they’re not purists about audio tracks).

Three of the four titles are merely HD imports of special features and films already available on standard DVD. The exception is “Hero,” which includes an all-new featurette and a digital copy, but is actually one of the most divisive Blu-Rays of the year. Miramax/Buena Vista has made the baffling choice to include a higher caliber quality of audio for the dubbed tracks on “Hero,” “Iron Monkey, »

Scenes We Love: The Matrix

21 September 2009 8:33 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Time hasn't necessarily been kind to the Wachowski Brothers sci-fi trilogy, The Matrix. Granted, most of the blame can be placed at the doorstep of the Wachowskis themselves, thanks to some rocky sequels, although, I know I'm in the minority when I say that I kind of liked the final installment, Revolutions. But that probably had more to do with a soft spot for William Gibson styled techno-babble than anything else. But for today's Scenes We Love, let's all think back to the the spring of 1999, when the world was new, and you didn't have a clue what the Matrix was.

Now, whether this comes down to my extraordinary powers of observation or I've just seen too many movies, I can usually spot a plot turn coming a mile off. But in a million years, I couldn't have guessed that when Keanu swallowed that red pill he was about to »
