This was a very popular series in the late 60's and early 70's set in
the mythical area of Wyvern ( Possibly the Bristol area ). It features
the work of a Regional Crime Squad. Initially the two Stars were
Stratford Johns as Charlie Barlow and Frank Windsor as John Watt.
Barlow was a Detective Chief inspector in Z cars but on transfer to the
Regional Crime Squad he is now Detective Chief Superintent. Watt is
also promoted on transfer to Detective Inspector and by the time the
programme ends he is also a Detective Chief Superintendent. This was
presented as the 'Bee Knees', being a perfect example of how the modern
Police Force operates. I found it very clichéd, with the lower ranks
portrayed in a very wooden fashion. Garfield Morgan, as a Detective
Chief Inspector, had an excellent rehearsal for his role in the
Sweeney, 10 years later.

Actually filmed in Kent around the Medway Towns. How do I know, came
home to Prospect Row Chatham after school one afternoon to find the
place overrun with cops & cameras. Found out they weren't real cops &
my Mother was giving coffee to a cop with a dog (Snow? > the cop not
the dog). All I know is the dog was nice & he hated dogs, he was scared
of them. After that got used to them being around the place. Would love
to see some photos or shots of the series as they filmed around my
home.
I now have to waffle as this dumb system says I have to submit a
minimum of 10 lines.
Enjoyed Softly Softly Task Force as well as the original Z Cars.

Sunday night on the Auntie Beeb. Just another hackneyed cop show
churned out to show that the British government could outdo the
Americans in the crime drama department. The lower budget show Z Cars
-- presumably its predecessor, since they re-cycled actors -- was way
grittier and routinely featured the rozzers bitch slapping stroppy
tarts in roadside cafes. There was something about the accent used by
the lead dick that simply screamed "bad actor." However, since it was
filmed around Maidstone it was popular at my school, but I refused to
get into it.
This lame act had to compete with the sophisticated spy show Rat
Catchers on ITV, and I made my choice early on in the game. Since I
lived with my grandmother who loathed the filth, the choice was a
no-brainer.
