L.A. Film Festival '08: Tragedy and Comedy, "Spaced" and the Reitmans

30 June 2008 8:15 AM, PDT | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

By Stephen Saito

It's hard to say whether it's been the stifling heat or former Warner Independent chief Mark Gill's much-talked about "the sky really is falling" speech (published in full at indieWire here) that gave attendees of this year's Los Angeles Film Festival a sense of their own mortality. Then again, it could just be the way in which the effects of life-altering events have been examined in several of the festival's films, particularly in the narrative section.

When Gill, now heading up the indie shingle The Film Department, spoke at the adjoining film financing conference on the first Saturday of the festival, he decried the indie film marketplace as standing on the brink of oblivion, saying, "if you decide to make a movie budgeted under $10 million on your own tomorrow, you have a 99.9% chance of failure." On that basis, it's possible that "Winged Creatures," an ensemble drama

After Snubbing Ipods, NBC Embraces Zunes

6 May 2008 10:36 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

NBC Universal, which stopped selling TV shows on Apple's iTunes Store when Apple refused to allow it to set the prices for its product, has made a deal with Microsoft -- in which it will sell shows that can be viewed on Microsoft's Zune portable video player for $1.99 -- the same price that Apple was charging for them on ITunes. Shows from Nbc's sibling cable networks will also be offered for downloading onto the Zune, including Comedy Central's South Park and Mtv's The Hills. The Zune has been trying to make a dent in the portable media market, which is dominated by Apple's iPods and iPhones -- but without much success.

29 April 2008 9:18 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Cartoon classic The Simpsons has been named the best comedy TV show of all time in a new poll.

Seinfeld was named second, followed by All in the Family, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Cheers.

None of the top ten shows are still running - and only 7 of the top 50 are currently on the air; The Simpsons, The Office, South Park, Curb Your Enthusiasm, 30 Rock, Scrubs and Family Guy.

The top ten is as follows:

4. The Mary Tyler Moore Show

South Park Creators Twit WGA

4 April 2008 11:36 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have lampooned the recent Writers Guild of America strike. As described by the website Hollywood Today, Wednesday's episode of the animated series featured the head of the "World Canadian Bureau" leading Canada into a costly and pointless strike. Characters in the episode also remarked that more money was lost by striking than could ever be realistically gained. (Animated shows like South Park are not covered by the Writers Guild of America contract.)

South Park: All The Shows, All The Time

26 March 2008 10:04 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

For reportedly the first time, every episode of every season of a TV series will be streamed online in its entirety with the official launch Tuesday of the new South Park website at southparkstudios.com. In a statement, Comedy Central said that since a beta version was launched last Wednesday, it had delivered more than a million streams of full South Park episodes. The show's creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, said in a statement that they had pushed for the site because "we got really sick of having to download our own show illegally all the time so we gave ourselves a legal alternative." Due to contractual issues, the episodes will not be available in the U.K., Australia and a few other countries, "but we're not far off from making that happen," South Park Digital Studios General Manager Anne Garefino said.

Spears Set For South Park

18 March 2008 12:05 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Britney Spears has landed another TV spot just days after filming an episode of U.S. comedy How I Met Your Mother - on South Park.

The pop singer will join Marilyn Manson and Tom Cruise among the stars who have been parodied on the cult cartoon series, when her likeness appears in an episode which airs in America on Wednesday.

In the hilarious episode, South Park regulars Stan and Kyle take on a mission to get troubled Spears to the North Pole.

In a news release, a spokesman for the show says, "Britney Spears is trying to get away from it all in the mountains near South Park when the boys have a run-in with her.

"Stan and Kyle get caught up in Britney's celebrity and the never-ending feeding frenzy that follows her wherever she goes."

The Celebrity Apprentice: Bizarro Edition

11 March 2008 9:34 AM, PDT | From buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news

The Celebrity Apprentice has been a success for NBC.  The Apprentice was supposed to be a dead franchise, remember.  But, thanks to the writers' strike and the gimmicky celebrity premise, the reality series returned with its most successful season in years and earned an early renewal for another celebrity edition, which will premiere next season.  As we know from Dancing with the Stars, these celebrity reality shows like to find certain types of contestants and re-cast each season in a repetitive manner.  On Dancing with the Stars, there are always a couple of athletes, always the random barely famous hot chick, and the funny old guy.  They even cast Beverly Hills 90210 cast members in consecutive seasons.  This got me to thinking about how NBC will cast the next celebrity edition of The Apprentice.  It's been such an unexpected success that I doubt Trump and team will stray too much from this season's formula.
