The vampire has been a key figure in folklore, literature, television and cinema. Its popularity, at present, has never been so high. It is easy to see the appeal: immortality and sex. Since death is the fate that awaits us all, a creature that we invent and imbue with an indeterminate lifespan, captivates the collective imagination like no other. Due to sexual liberalism and relaxed censorship of the 1960s, the erotic sensibilities inherent in the mythology were allowed to fruition in cinema. What once was implied, could now be shown in all its sexy glory (see the films of Jean Rollin). Gothic horror and romanticism may be the classic home of the vampire, but in cinema, they have found a new place to spread wider-reaching nightmares.
In recent times, the everlasting monster has been tamed. Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Saga saw them turn into something akin to vegetarians and teen heart-throbs, »

It's been about a year since we last brought you guys up-to-speed on Jim Spanos' vampire tale Maidenhead. Thankfully there's a lot more to talk about now, including the synopsis and even a new trailer!
The House of the Devil's A.J. Bowen and From Dusk Till Dawn's Michael Parks star in Maidenhead, which is truly an off-kilter vampire movie. Look for more headlines soon and be sure to check out the official Maidenhead site while you wait!
Synopsis
Poor Martin doesn't have much of a life. He doesn't have a girlfriend, he hasn't been sleeping well, and he still lives at home ... with his father, who is an obnoxious, bloodthirsty monster strapped to a bed. Did we mention he isn't sleeping well? Martin (A.J. Bowen of House of the Devil and The Signal) spends his days going numbly about the business of tending to his Dad's grisly needs. »

Twilight is out of control, and now its floodgates have burst, spilling its contents everywhere. Bit players such as Ashley Greene from the Twilight films are now getting genre work — in this case, it’s The Apparition for Joel Silver’s Dark Castle production house.
(To be fair, I have no idea how big or small of a role Greene plays in the Twilight films, because I haven’t seen either of them yet. All I know is that she isn’t one of the dynamic duo the films center around.)
The Apparition is apparently (*yawn*) based on true events, and revolves around “a young couple haunted by a supernatural presence unleashed during a college experiment.” Ooh. The Stanford Prison Experiment with a supernatural twist?
Production will start in early February with writer/director Todd Lincoln at the helm. He’s pretty much a newbie, only having done effects work »

Ashley Greene - currently better known to the world as Twilight's Alice Cullen, is looking to star in Dark Castle's Apparition. If she locks in a deal, she'll be playing one half of a couple who get seriously haunted by an evil supernatural presence unleashed during a college experiment. We're guessing it's not a beer monster, though we would probably watch that. Todd Lincoln, whose credits to date include being a production assistant on From Dusk Till Dawn and the producer of a documentary about a muscle-car enthusiast has been...

Now that she's gained the kind of notoriety most actors only dream of by portraying Alice Cullen, adopted "sister" of Edward, in The Twilight Saga, Ashley Greene is undoubtedly fielding offers left and right. It's good to see her sticking with our genre as she appears to be in final talks to star in a new film entitled Apparition.
As Variety reports, Apparition, which is being readied by Joel Silver's Dark Castle for a February 1, 2010, start date, centers on a young couple haunted by a supernatural presence that's unleashed during a college experiment. [The] story's inspired by true events.
Todd Lincoln, who penned one of the screenplay drafts for the long-delayed Hack/Slash film adaptation and served as a production assistant on From Dusk Till Dawn, is writing and directing the hopefully spooky thriller.
With its production kick-off fast approaching, look for more on Apparition soon, especially who might be »

It's about time, we say! Rodrigo Gudiño of Rue Morgue Magazine and The Facts In the Case of Mister Hollow fame is finally cutting his teeth on his first feature film Cut Throats Nine . Rue Morgue Cinema and Someone at the Door Productions are spearheading this endeavor, a remake of the Spanish/Italian grindhouse western Condenados a vivir . Toplining the project is star Harvey Keitel ( Bad Lieutenant , From Dusk Till Dawn ), Mads Mikkelsen ( Casino Royale ) and Roy Dupuis ( La Femme Nikita ). Hell of a trio. Gudiño scripted the remake with Joseph O'Brien ( RoboCop: Prime Directives ) which, in turn, is based on a story by the original film's helmer Joaquin Romero Marchent and co-writer Santiago Moncada. Cut Throats Nine follows a wagonload of convicts as they travel... »

Did you know that there was a sequel in the works for 2006’s Smokin’ Aces, with practically none of the original cast? Neither did we, until this trailer came across The Flickcast desk. It would be an interesting take, if it had any of the same people involved as the original film.
While the film doesn’t look like it will do much justice to Joe Carnahan’s original, the trailer was quite clever. It starts off by making sure we see some of our favorite faces from the original, such as Jeremy Piven, and then it throws a record scratch in to tell us that we won’t see them anymore.
Instead of a well-rounded cast consisting of Piven, Ray Liotta, Ben Affleck, Ryan Reynolds, Alicia Keys, and tons others, we now treated to the all-star cast of Vinnie Jones, Ernie Hudson, Tom Berenger, and the guy who had »

Given man's unwavering fascination with woman, it's no surprise that the female star acts as the anchor to a dominant portion of horror pictures. I mean really, who wants to see a bare chested man tearin ass through the woods screaming at the top of his lungs while a bladed assailant nips at his heels? I don't - I know that much, although I'm certain there are plenty of men who would disagree (and that's okay with me, to each his own!). The simple fact remains however, women bring a unique appeal and certain sensual atmosphere to film that no man ever could. And it's not all about gratuitous T&A.
There's a comforting quality in the hands of the heroine; a fascinating maternal strength that, as a man I cannot genuinely relate to. I can however admire, and in many cases it's nearly impossible to not admire the lone »

In second place was Christopher Lee for his portrayal of Count Dracula, while Wesley Snipes was third with Blade, followed by Tom Cruise for his role in Interview With A Vampire.
Gary Oldman came fifth with Bram Stoker's Dracula and the rest of the top 10 were: Kate Beckinsale as Selene in Underworld, Kiefer Sutherland for his role in The Lost Boys, Salma Hayek in From Dusk Till Dawn, Max Shrek as Count Orlok in Nosferatu and, in 10th place, Bela Lugosi's portrayal of Dracula.

Either it’s a sign of the end times or a sign of Twilight’s undying popularity (pun intended) but Robert Pattinson’s Edward Cullen has been named moviedom’s favorite vampire.
In a survey conducted by ad agency Pearl & Dean, Twilight’s Cullen received 38% of the vote from more than 3,000 movie-going fans. Behind Cullen is Christopher Lee’s classic Dracula and Wesley Snipes’ Blade. Fruity fanged one Lestat, played by Tom Cruise in Interview With the Vampire, was No.4.
Kate Beckinsale’s Selene from the first two Underworld films napped top prize for a female with Salma Hayek’s snake-charming and hip-shaking Santanico Pandermonium (From Dusk Till Dawn) taking second amongst women.
“People love to be scared witless, particularly at this time of year,” said Pearl & Dean CEO Kathryn Jacob. “Edward Cullen being voted firm favorite movie vampire is testament to the fact that people still enjoy a good bloodsucker. »

In the Robert Rodriguez-scripted/directed first of its two conjoined movies, Grindhouse is the ultimate sugar rush for horror fans, a high-calorie, low-nutrition blast of cheap thrills wrought on a big budget. In the second, Quentin Tarantino upends the framework and traditions of exploitation fare to craft a film that’s just as much a showcase for his gift of (writing) gab as it is for action. And in both Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof, a love and respect shines through for the B-movie tradition that too many others “homage” with snarky irony. The wholeheartedness with which they express their devotion to the form almost amounts to a kind of innocence, and for all the explicit mayhem on screen, »

There's no denying that vampire popularity is at an all-time high or that, thanks to the likes of Stephenie Meyer, it's still on the rise. But despite the popular perception that vampire movies have been taking a "dirt-nap" since the '90s, that's not exactly true.
We look back at the two decades of movie undead that preceded the Cullens, a period that offers some awesome fanged films — and a few that should have stayed buried — in our Vampire Movie Timeline.

Admission to the movies is $16 for ghouls and $20 for regular humans; more info on the Walk can be seen here, and on the screenings here.

Fangoria Musick is going back in time... all the way to 1980. After all, if Fango Musick was bringing the rock in the 80's there's a good chance that Zz Top would've been covered quite a bit. Fangoria Musick has a trio of DVD's to give away, and we want You to win!

At long last, the bygone era of the 1980s creature feature has made its long-delayed and splashy return to the big screen with John Gulager’s Feast, a rock-’em-sock-’em gross-out bloodbath that echoes the days of Evil Dead II, Return Of The Living Dead and maybe a smidgen of Gargoyles. But here’s the heartbreaker: It’s apparent this film is the malicious, placenta-devouring offspring of three individuals (Gulager and writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton) who have created something—thanks to Project Greenlight—expressing their fervid obsession with the genre. However, it just falls short of delivering the double-barrel blast of cult flavor that would make this one an eternal midnight fix. Gulager came close, »
