Blockbuster said Wednesday that it plans to go directly to independent film producers to purchase video-rental rights for new releases. It said about 35 films would come from its Viacom sibling, Showtime, each year, including those produced exclusively for the pay-TV network and those that Showtime acquired that could not get major theatrical releases, like Lolita (1997/I) and Bastard Out of Carolina (1996). Indie producers signing up with Blockbuster would grant the video chain exclusivity for a period of time. »
