Physicist Brian Greene has written dialogue for 'Lithgow, John''s character.
In the first episode where William Shatner plays The Big Giant Head, he talks about the dreadful experience he had aboard an airplane, whereupon 'John Lithgow' exclaims, "So did I!" This is an inside joke about the "The Twilight Zone" (1959) episode Nightmare at 20,000 Feet (1963). William Shatner played the lead role in that episode of the 1959 TV series and John Lithgow played the lead role in that story in Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983).
During its five-year run on primetime, the show underwent more than 15 time-slot changes.
During one episode, Dick ('John Lithgow') and Sally (Kristen Johnston) are trying to talk to each other in the kitchen. However, Tommy and his friends are down in the garage practicing their speed-metal song. Dick goes down into the garage and begins to preach about the sins of rock music to the teens. Lithgow gave this same sermon in Footloose (1984).
In an episode dealing with the 'secret' relationship between Dick and Dr. Albright, the family becomes agitated that Mary is staying over so much. Sally complains, "Last night she forced us to watch an A&E Biography on Susan Saint James!" Jane Curtin (Dr. Mary Albright) and Susan Saint James were co-stars on the CBS sitcom "Kate & Allie" (1984).
The three main male characters' names are Tom, Dick and Harry.
In the episode where they go to New York to start a different life, Harry gets a job as the President of NBC. As president he arranges a new schedule for the spoof of "Will & Grace" (1998). ("Will & Grace" (1998) is produced by NBC).
In the episode in which Dick ('John Lithgow') accidentally hits a chipmunk and rushes it to the vet, he has a very dramatic scene next to the examining table where he rants about his chipmunk being in pain. He yells "Give my chipmunk his shot!", a reference to Terms of Endearment (1983), in which Lithgow also appeared.
The character Dick Solomon was ranked #24 in TV Guide's list of the "25 Greatest Sci-Fi Legends" (1 August 2004 issue).
95% of all episode titles are a play on the word "Dick".
A lot of the sets are used more than once, hence the similar designs in some places. Eg the classroom used for Harry's night school is in fact Mary's classroom.
Cancelled on 8 April 2001 due to falling viewing figures in its final season.
'John Lithgow''s son from his first marriage, Ian Lithgow, played Dick Solomon's student Leon throughout the series
