10 Most Fascinating 'End of the World' Movies

8 November 2009 4:59 AM, PST | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

There are many theories, ideas or should I say 'schools of thought' on how the world would end. At the height of the Cold War, nuclear annihilation ranks at the very top. While others argue it will not be man who will destroy the world (directly) but - an epidemic of global proportions (most probably from a potent strain of virus - think: I am Legend) or severe climactic change (another ice age perhaps? That would be Day After Tommorow right?) or mechanical uprising (The Terminator, anyone?) or even attack from the outside - conquering aliens (Mars Attacks!) or perhaps an asteroid. And let's not forget zombies!

Forgotten Performances: Tom Hanks As Brainwashed D&D Nerd

6 November 2009 5:30 PM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

· Topless Robot reminds us that before Angels & Demons, Saving Private Ryan, and Philadelphia, there was Mazes and Monsters -- a made-for-tv movie starring Tom Hanks as an RPG enthusiast who lurks in alleyways, stabbing stuntmen in really shoddy-looking lizard suits. The climax takes place on the roof of the Wtc, further underscoring the movie's underlying message that virgins cause terrorism. »

Deep Inside Pearl Jam's 'Ten Club' In The First Installment Of Fandemonium

2 November 2009 10:01 AM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Sometimes being a fan only involves cranking up tunes in your car or having a poster on your wall. But some groups attract a whole different sect of enthusiast, which is why we've invented Fandemonium, a new feature devoted to the deep crevices of musical devotion. In the opening salvo, a Pearl Jam superfan makes a pilgrimage to see her favorite group and meet some like-minded folks along the way.

By Carrie Pierson

When I received special some special "Pearl Jam fans only" coupons upon arriving at my hotel in Philadelphia last Friday (October 30), I knew I had crossed the line from ardent admirer to superfan. After all, I was checking into the hotel under the special Pearl Jam Ten Club discounted rate available only to fan club members. You know the scene in "Best in Show" where all of the dog owners check into the hotel with their dogs? »

New York City & Philadelphia Go Head-To-Head In The World Series -- And In Cinema History!

28 October 2009 2:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies aren't exactly the fiercest of rivals, but there is sure to be blood — or maybe just some home runs, botched calls and heated arguments with umpires — when the two baseball teams collide for Game 1 of the World Series this evening (so long as the rain stays away that is!).

As New Yorkers and Philadelphians prepare for battle, we got to wondering about some of the other rivalries already in place between the two cities — in motion picture form, that is. I'm not necessarily talking about fictional competitions between NYC and Philly, so much as stacking movies set in those cities against one another.

Through that framework, you'd be surprised at how many competing movies there are between the Empire and Keystone States — just hit the jump and see the head-to-head match-ups for yourself!

Music: Review:Alec Ounsworth: Mo Beauty

19 October 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

There’s a song on Mo Beauty, the debut solo album from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah frontman Alec Ounsworth, called “South Philadelphia (Drug Days).” In it, Ounsworth sings of “cheap thrills” and running away, and like many of the tracks on the record, it’s coated, enamel-like, with symphonic bombast. A churning song about the streets of Philadelphia? A veritable army of session musicians? Indeed: Mo Beauty owes a great debt to Bruce Springsteen at his most baroque. Cyhsy’s last album, Some Loud Thunder, dropped hints at this kitchen-sink creative direction, but Mo Beauty is something else entirely ... »

Review: Law Abiding Citizen

15 October 2009 4:15 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The opening shot of Law Abiding Citizen swirls around the statue of William Penn, one of the most well-known pacifist thinkers of early American history, as he stands atop the courthouse in Philadelphia. The camera will return to him once or twice more during the film, an interesting reminder amidst the violence and willingness to sink well below the human base and deep into the realm where taking another person's life seems the only logical recourse on which the film feeds. There are some interesting ideas here - What do you do to fight against a system? How can there be true justice? Was Denzel Washington busy? Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) loses his entire world when two home invaders kill his wife and daughter. Instead of working the long hours and fighting for justice, rising legal star Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) cuts a deal for a confession and preserves his conviction rate while one of the killers »

A Career-Spanning Conversation with Joe Dante

11 October 2009 4:32 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

We recently published Glenn Kay's interview with Joe Dante discussing the full details on his upcoming film The Hole (read it here). Now, Jason Anders caught up with the director to go back even further. All the way back to 1978, and the recently remade Piranha...

Jason Anders/Fangoria: Let's start with one of your earliest films, 1978's Piranha; what originally inspired you to become involved in filmmaking, and what roads led to you directing one of your first motion pictures, which garnered the respect of major Hollywood names like Steven Spielberg? Also, tell me about the challenges you faced on the production of this film, which was shot in just 30 days.

Joe Dante: I had originally planned to become a cartoonist; it was only during art school that I came to realize I was more inclined toward filmmaking. This was the mid-'60s when the idea of "film school »

"Paranormal Activity" Succeeds in Giving Audiences Sleepless Nights

28 September 2009 4:18 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

This past weekend, the new horror movie sensation Paranormal Activity did its best to scare the wits out of people (read our review here). In an unusual release strategy, the film only played in 13 college towns, where the film only showed in late-night screenings on Friday and Saturday. The hope is for the college students in these areas to build a hype that would create a demand in other cities later on. It worked splendidly, leading to an expansion.

Paramount reports that all showings of the film were sold out, save for the Saturday night one in State College, Pa which was at 75% capacity—and that's due to a football game going on the same night. With such a positive buzz, Paranormal Activity plans on hitting 20 more cities later this week. Get ready if you're in one of these cities:

Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, DC/Baltimore, Denver, Detroit, Houston, La, Las Vegas, »

SAG Moderates Win Presidency, Secr. + Additional 4 Natl Seats

24 September 2009 6:39 PM, PDT | Digital Media Law | See recent Digital Media Law news »

In a victory for the SAG moderate coalition (Unite for Strength / Usan / independents), the Ufs candidates for president, Ken Howard, and secretary, Amy Aquino, won the union's national offices.

However, the election was close: Howard's total was slightly less than the two hardline candidates added together (Anne-Marie Johnson and Seymour Cassel) and Aquino's was slightly more than that of incumbent Connie Stevens. So the union is still very divided, and Howard acknowledged that the results were not a landslide and that the union is very divided, while saying that he planned to reach out to Mf supporters.

On the national board, the moderates showed strength as well: They picked up 4 of 11 seats in Hollywood and held all of the NY and regional (Rbd) seats. I estimate that this brings the moderate's board majority to around 60%, vs. 40% for Mf, but that's a very rough calculation and I'm not sure at this point. »

‘The A-Team’ Picks Its B.A. Baracus - But Still No Murdock

7 September 2009 10:02 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Well our friends in the Great White North are going to be seeing a lot of military action in the upcoming couple of months. Joe Carnahan, the director that brought us Smokin’ Aces and Narc, should be ready to start a six-week shooting schedule shortly in Vancouver for the upcoming feature film of  The A-Team. As an added bonus, it looks like Mma fighter Quinton “Rampage” Jackson has been selected to play the iconic, gold-chain-covered B.A. Baracus.

Mr. “Rampage” joins the already cast Liam Neeson as Col. John “Hannibal” Smith and this summer’s Hangover star, Bradley Cooper as Lt. Templeton “Faceman” Peck. Yet to be announced is the actor chosen to play H.M “Howling Mad” Murdock. We could easily speculate on who has been rumored to play the chopper pilot turned psychiatric patient, but frankly the list has gotten ridiculous and a bit tedious.

Iconic Gay Movie Roles

18 August 2009 6:59 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

It’s not exactly news that as a mass medium, cinema has the power to dramatically influence and change public attitudes toward minority groups, often making them accessible and relatable to the mainstream.

Unfortunately, that power works the opposite way as well and the movie industry, under a strict legion of ‘so-called’ decency laws commonly referred to as the Hays Code enacted in the 1930s, tended to frown upon positive representations of the gay community up until the 1960s. Gays were still present on screen, but more often than not, they were limited to stereotypes such as the drag queen/transvestite, the degenerate, the depraved killer and so forth.

As The Celluloid Closet (1995) brilliantly revealed, many gay and bisexual men had their motivations buried in subtext – virile characters like Ben Hur, for instance, were blatantly bisexual, but had to be inconspicuous about their love for the boys.

Demme 'Quits Marley Biopic'

14 August 2009 5:21 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A planned biopic of Bob Marley's life has been thrown into doubt again - director Jonathan Demme has reportedly followed in Martin Scorsese's footsteps and quit the project.

The Raging Bull legend was originally signed up to helm the story of the late reggae icon's life, with Marley's family heaping praise on the moviemaker for taking charge of the production.

In a statement, Marley's son Ziggy said, "I am thrilled that the Marley family will finally have the opportunity to document our father's legacy and are truly honoured to have Mr. Scorsese guide the journey."

But due to prior commitments, Scorsese was forced to drop out of the film in May, leaving Philadelphia director Demme to lead the project.

However, Demme has reportedly quit the movie following a disagreement with producer Steve Bing, who was left unimpressed with the footage filmed so far, according to New York gossip column Page Six.

The movie was slated for a February release - to mark what would have been the No Woman, No Cry hitmaker's 65th birthday - but production is expected to halt until a new director is hired.

Marley died of cancer in 1981 aged 36. »

Monkey Uncaged: The Ten Most “Important” Gay-Related Movies

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)

A Note from the Flying Monkey: Of the many emails I receive every week for my column, some are so good that they simply can’t be answered in just a few words. So from time to time, the editors have decided to let me out of the “cage” of that regular column, in a feature we’re calling Monkey Uncaged! (What I didn’t tell the editors, of course, is that now they’ve let me out of my cage, do they really think I’m ever going back inside again?! Editor’s Note: Monkey no listen to his editor, Monkey no get fed.)

Q: I just watched a movie that had several references to old movies that are very popular in gay culture, and that made me think of »
