Full disclosure first: I have not seen the previous versions of this film, but have long been aware of the basic plot, inasmuch as it is a cultural icon, and often referenced. This was okay, no more, no less. Perhaps being aware of the plot kept that feeling of dread from taking hold. I have always really liked Meg Tilly, but with such an odd role here, it is difficult to rate her performance. R. Lee Ermey was wasted on his part, and anyway, he is forever type-cast as the quintessential drill instructor. Gabrielle Anwar, with whom I was unfamiliar, played the point-of-view character, and did pretty well with it. She was fairly cute, too. This film is worth checking out on cable or something, but it's no classic.
