In the New York Times, Bill Carter writes ,"very few women make it inside the writing rooms for late-night television hosts, despite that women make up a larger proportion of their audience than men. There are no female writers on the new “The Jay Leno Show,” none on “Late Show with David Letterman,” none on “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien.”" Based on his article and Nell Scovell's personal account in Vanity Fair, I have come to understand why the odds are stacked against my wedging my paw in the door. I still have hope (also known as a delusions). The Top 10 Reasons This Woman Can't Write for Late Night Comedy Variety Shows 10) I will be overcome by desire for my male comedy writing peers and superiors, who are known for their off-white, pasty skin and muscle tonus minimus, akin to albino, soft shell turtles. 9) My lady sensibility. »

Andre Agassi, the onetime Wimbledon champ and $100-million Nike contract scion, hawked his new "explosive" (meth) memoir on The Late Show with David Letterman. As is de rigeur with selling a tell-all, the semi-somber tennis legend made big claims about himself: He never liked tennis and preferred golf and baseball; he didn't want to be a part of his marriage; his furry-porn fox haircut from an early '90s tennis match was a wig. Now, Agassi may have backed up some of these claims, but more importantly, he validated judgments made by another big-name memoirist of the past few months -- Kathy Griffin. »

Oye como wow: George Lopez's new TBS talk show got off to a solid start Monday in the ratings.
"Lopez Tonight" averaged 1.7 million viewers, just over 1 million of whom were adults 18-49. In the key demo, "Lopez" outperformed the season-to-date averages for veteran late-night staples such as "The Daily Show" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live," according to Nielsen data.
"Lopez" also did particularly well with adults 18-34, attracting 608,000 viewers in that deno. That's more than CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman" i... »

A U.S. producer accused of blackmailing TV presenter David Letterman has urged a New York judge to dismiss the extortion charge against him because the case has been "sensationalised".
Robert Halderman was charged with attempted first degree grand larceny last month after allegedly threatening to expose The Late Show host's affairs with employees unless the TV titan paid $2 million (£1.25 million) to silence him.
Halderman, who has been suspended from his job as producer of CBS news show 48 Hours, returned to court on Tuesday with his lawyer Gerald Shargel.
Shargel claims the case has been blown out of proportion since the news hit the headlines because it involves a "celebrity", reports TMZ.com.
In legal papers filed in court, the lawyer writes, "The sensationalism surrounding this indictment, fueled by the celebrity of the purported victim and the deference paid to that celebrity by the District Attorney's Office, has swallowed the only pertinent issue ...."
Shargel also defended Halderman against the extortion charges, insisting his client was attempting to sell the exclusive rights to a screenplay about Letterman's sexual exploits to the presenter, adding it was "a pure commercial transaction".
The case continues. »

When CBS promoted the 60 Minutes interview with Andre Agassi that aired this past Sunday, they said that he was only talking to one person, Katie Couric, as if this was the only place you'd be able to hear Agassi talk about his new book (Open) and the revelations that have surfaced (especially his crystal meth use in the late 90s).
So what exactly was so "only talking to one person" about this interview? Kvbc did an interview with him about the book, he's on Live with Regis & Kelly tomorrow morning, on The Late Show tomorrow night, and he's on Jimmy Kimmel Live on November 23. He also did an interview with People.

Several weeks after David Letterman was shaken by a sex-and-extortion scandal, CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman" has shown little sign of weakening audience support.
Far from hurting the host's popularity, the headlines seemingly have had little impact on his late-night show and possibly even helped the series grow its viewership compared with last year.

Today I made an executive decision and gave the podcast an oh-so-creative name: "The TV Squad Podcast." This was after we recorded it on Tuesday, so I still refer to it by its old Apb name. If you have any suggestions, let me know at tvsquad [at] gmail [dot] com.
In this episode, Late Show writer Bill Scheft joins me, Danny Gallagher and Kona Gallagher to talk about his new book Everything Hurts. Of course, there's lots of good behind-the-scenes info about what it was like to work at The Late Show, especially on how the events of the past month affected the staff and the show's writing, including the monologue.
He also tells some funny stories about being canned from Sports Illustrated (and spawns a new catchphrase), feeding lines to the guy who played Mike Singletary and more. It's 45 minutes of fun.
After the interview, Kona, Danny and I give our picks of the week. »
