The baseball players are shown drinking at a roadhouse.

The manager Jimmy spends much of the first half of the film intoxicated. He is also shown carrying and sipping from a bottle/flask. Several characters refer to him as a drunk or a lush.

Most of the baseball players are shown "sneaking" cigarettes at a road-stop. When interrupted by their chaperone, they conceal their lit cigarettes, and when the chaperone leaves, they all exhale a huge cloud of smoke.
