Syfy has become known not just for cheesy sci-fi and horror flicks but also remakes, or "reimaginings," of several classic films and shows. They had Children of the Corn recently, they had Tin Man (a modern take on The Wizard of Oz), and they have an Alien Nation remake in the works (not to mention Quantum Leap).
They're also doing Alice, which is their take on Alice in Wonderland. Here's the trailer. It premieres December 6.

Humans, to John Cavil (Dean Stockwell), are just a bunch of cockroaches waiting to be squashed and if he -- or better phrased it -- has his way, mankind will be crushed by their very own creation, the Cylons. Cavil, of course, is a Cylon, and fans of Battlestar Galactica glimpsed the always-sardonic Cavil and several other Cavil models in action over the course of a dozen-plus episodes of the show. Now, the Cavils are back in the new direct-to-dvd movie Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, which fills in the blanks about the Cylons' infamous plot and reveals the hows/whats/whys of several popular characters' disturbing actions. In fact, two of the Cavils -- John and Brother Cavil -- are the central figures in The Plan, which stars Dean Stockwell as the Cavils, was directed by former Battlestar Galactica regular Edward James Olmos, and is out Oct. 27 on DVD. There are still a lot of "Battlestar Galactica" fans out there, especially in critics circles, but not everyone was a fan of the latest DVD that was released Tuesday: "The Plan." The telemovie was written by "Caprica" showrunner Jane Espenson and directed by "Battlestar Galactica" star Edward James Olmos, and provides backstory of the Cylon attack that started the critically acclaimed Syfy series through the eyes of the Cylons themselves. It starred Dean Stockwell from "Quantum Leap" fame as well as Tricia Helfer, Grace Park, Aaron Douglas and Michael Trucco. Here is a sampling of just some of the reviews for the DVD, which is available now through Universal Home Entertainment. "This 'Plan' seems built from all mortar and no bricks, despite a rich premise: revisiting the 'Galactica' ... »

I wasn't aware of this, but apparently there have been rumors flying that a movie version of Quantum Leap will get going at some point, with Scott Bakula reprising his role as Beckett. Now Moviehole has gone straight to the source to find out the truth on these rumors, and as it turns out, Scott Bakula knows just as much as we do. "That rumor's always out there," Bakula told them. "It would be fun. I would always - you know, you talk about this stuff, and you'd have to see how it would manifest, you know? In terms of a script. And - I always have joked that they'll do it, but it won't be with me and Dean, you know? Because that's just the way that Hollywood is. If they did a feature, they would recast it. And make it better." So in the same way you sit »

A Quantum Leap feature film or revival series have been reported or rumored so many times over the years that fans like yours truly get increasingly bitter at each new mention. Show star Scott Bakula is much more zen though. Lucky bastard. Talking to the folks of Moviehole this week, the actor mentioned he'd sure like to see his old show be revived, but has made his peace with the fact that the show is done with him. "I always have joked that they'll do it, but it won't be with me and... »

The Informant!
Directed by: Steven Soderbergh
Cast: Matt Damon, Scott Bakula, Melanie Lynskey, Joel McHale
Running Time: 1 hr 48 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: September 18, 2009
Plot: Based on the book by Kurt Eichenwald and true events … Mark Whitacre (Damon) chooses to side with the FBI in an investigation into agri-business (mainly corn) price fixing at Adm. Unfortunately Mark has a problem with keeping his truth straight.
Who’s It For? It’s an adult comedy. The Hangover is also an adult comedy. These are two completely different things. The comedy is of the chuckle variety in The Informant! and there’s a lot of it. And if you’re willing to watch Damon in non-Bourne movies, then get in line.
Expectations: Damon is at the top of my list for “if I could only pick one guy’s movies for the rest of my life including the ones he has already made. »

The Informant!
Directed by: Steven Soderbergh
Cast: Matt Damon, Scott Bakula, Joel McHale, Melanie Lynskey
Running Time: 1 hr, 48 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: September 18, 2009
Plot: The story of conniving business man Mark Whitacre, a man whose many ulterior motives nearly bring down both his high-paying company, and the F.B.I. Though presented as a true story, the film insists there have been various entertainment-inducing liberties that were taken to present a more light-hearted depiction of the events that transpired from 1992 to 1996.
Who’s It For? Those who still aren’t convinced Matt Damon has any relative range as an actor. Soderbergh has yet to include “spoof comedy” to his illustrious directorial career, and even the greats have muffed such opportunities up. This is a film you should see if you are curious about what happens when two popular Hollywood talents put their reputations on the line, and spread their wings a bit. »

Matt Damon in The Informant!
Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures The trailers for Steven Soderbergh's The Informant! are a great example of why I do my best to avoid film marketing. While they don't necessarily spoil the film, they create an impression for a film you just don't get. Sure, there is a jaunty score and a bumbling performance by Matt Damon as the corporate whistleblower Mark Whitacre, but it's more than that... while at the same time... it's not. Let me explain... As much as I would love to place the blame solely on the marketing division at Warner Bros., I really can't. For starters, the trailers are fantastic and hopefully will get people into the theaters to watch this film over the other dogs opening this weekend. On top of that, there really isn't much of a way to sum up The Informant! in a short amount of time. »

Matt Damon is The Informant
The Fix Is In. That is the title of episode 168 of “This American Life” where the story of Mark Whitacre was first heard by screenwriter Scott Burns and eventually made into a movie. Such is Hollywood. After seeing the film yesterday, I looked up the Chicago Public Radio program and listened to it this morning. I would have appreciated hearing the episode before seeing the film for most of the same reasons that I think the second viewing of this film will be more satisfying then the first. I didn’t get to the screening early so I sat fairly close to the front (the only seats that were available). Behind me slumped a group of irritating kids who spoke loudly to each other and said “Matt Damon” in the Team America voice every time he came on screen. Idiots behind me and, on screen, »

Opening tomorrow is the new Steven Soderbergh movie “The Informant!” The film is based on the true story of the highest-ranking corporate whistleblower in U.S. history and the film stars Matt Damon, Scott Bakula, Joel McHale and Melanie Lynskey. While I’d love to go into detail about the film, it’s one of those movies the less you know the better, so I’ll just say I really liked the movie and I recommend checking it out this weekend. Especially if you enjoy surprises….
Anyway, a few days ago I got to speak with Scott Bakula about playing FBI Special Agent Brian Shepard and working for Steven Soderbergh. Of course I also worked in some “Star Trek” and “Quantum Leap” questions, and I also asked him about being on “Chuck” last season and if he might be coming back. If you’re a fan of Scott’s work, »

Scott Bakula specializes in characters that exude a throwback masculinity tempered by a warm, easygoing trustfulness. It's not surprising, then, that Steven Soderbergh hand-picked the star of Quantum Leap and Enterprise for the part of Special Agent Brian Shepard in his fact-based corporate caper, The Informant!. Shepard is a good-natured lawman investigating a lysine price-fixing scandal, to whom it quickly becomes apparent that his star witness -- played by a doughy Matt Damon with demented abandon -- isn't exactly working with both cornholders. We talked to Bakula about the risks and rewards of playing the straight guy, his not-so-secret identity as an accomplished song and dance man, and the legendary magazine shoot that follows him wherever he goes. »

Nikolaj Arcel is the man that Warners and Guillermo del Toro have selected to handle the Deadman film. Our hero is Boston Brand, a circus trapeze artist who is murdered by a mysterious killer while performing. In the afterlife, he's given the ability - by a Hindu goddess, no less - to possess the living (think Quantum Leap meets Ghost) and uses his newfound power to help people while tracking down the man who offed him. Gdt has been developing this one for a while now - back in 2006, when his slate was only slightly less crowded,...

I feel like a hole in the time-space continuum ought to open around this image. You've got Jason Bourne (ie Matt Damon), "Quantum Leap" protag Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula) and "The Soup" host Joel McHale looking very serious over their diner food in Steven Soderbergh's "The Informant!," based on the 2000 book by Kurt Eichenwald.
In the movie, Damon stars as Mark Whitacre, former company man VP-turned-corporate corruption snitch. Whitacre worked for years to gather evidence of price-fixing against Adm, an Illinois-based agri-business. He remains the highest-ranking executive officer to ever blow the whistle on an employer's corrupt practices. Hit the jump for the intrigue.

The movie did so well, that now Audrey Niffenegger's novel The Time Traveler's Wife will be adapted into a series by ABC. No word yet on casting. I haven't seen the movie but have read the book and given the ending of the book (which I won't spoil for those who haven't seen the movie or read the book), I don't see how a sequel series is possible.
Most likely, it will be a remake and not a sequel, but that could be confusing for the audience as well. Perhaps they should keep the title and have it be a complete different couple?
Seriously, how can they do this successfully as a series? Will it be something like Quantum Leap except rather than trying to change history Henry DeTamble is just trying to get home before Claire's pot roast gets cold?
While I think it was a good concept for a movie, »

After The Time Traveler's Wife scored a fairly respectable little pile of poker chips at this weekend's box office, the news is breaking that the story is next headed to the small screen. Marta Kaufman, co-creator of Friends and Veronica's Closet, is set to write and executive produce an ongoing series that can take time spinning out the decade long romance of the novel at the same time as giving us stand alone narratives tied-up on an episode by epidsode basis. Quantum Leap, anyone? Or maybe Journeyman is more on the nose. According to The Wrap, ABC and Kaufman have been talking about the project "for years." Of course, it's no surprise that the light came on just now, when the film has proven itself in the marketplace. I was definitely not impressed with Robert Schwnetke's direction of the film adaptation. At best it was quite perfunctory stuff, while some »

The last time we were “Crushing On” someone, it was Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright) from the Harry Potter films. The “Crushing On” series focuses on one relatively unknown or underappreciated actor/actress that may not be popular with mainstream audiences (yet) but that we feel should get some exposure for their work. Today we continue our new semi-regular series “Crushing On” with a name that most people have heard but few people know anything about: Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
It’s really a shame that mainstream audiences haven’t had a chance to fully appreciate Jgl’s work. He has quite an extensive background in acting and is only 28 years old, but has been acting since he was 7 with his first TV debut, Stranger on My Land. For the next four years he played various roles in a gambit of TV shows: Family Ties, Murder She Wrote, China Beach, Quantum Leap and L.A. Law. »

The usually underwhelming Emmy Awards telecast Q & A ran a strong anchor leg for CBS at the TCA press tour on Monday. In addition to a typically (and winningly) glib Neil Patrick Harris via satellite, Executive Producer Don Mischer and ATAS President John Schaffner discussed in detail their plan to make a few nips and tucks to the somewhat bloated awards by "time-shifting" eight of the acceptance speeches. Rereading through the transcript today, the phrase "time-shifting" was uttered so many times that the more tired critics in the audience (or those who hadn't hit the sundae bar) must have thought CBS was updating Quantum Leap for the new generation (Scott Bakula is available). The nominees in the shortened categories definitely have a gripe, but is losing 10 minutes and 25 seconds from the broadcast and showing clips from popular but unnominated programs going to cause an uptick in viewership? Doubtful. But not »
