I admit my bias up front; I adore Leigh's films. They may have flaws, but what I love about them is the way they focus on tiny little moments of real life. Those exquisite, raw moments of unguarded feeling. Leigh makes them tangible. He does not do grand, sweeping epics. He deals with the small, everyday ache of living. In High Hopes the young couple are drifting. The man sees himself as a valiant Socialist, leading his life as an example to the masses. His uncertain partner trying to find her place in his life. The man's mother who in the past was cold and critical, now failing in health, needy, dependent and angry, has became a guilty, dreaded obligation. To deal with profound themes in minute interactions is very powerful. Yes, scenes sometimes stagnate because Leigh gives actors the situation, but lets them use their own words and actors love to hear themselves talk. It can be annoying, but for me it is a minor complaint. Leigh's films touch me profoundly; I hope they do the same for you.
