This is the new DVD of Full Metal Jacket (1987), digitally restored and remastered.
The film master used is in good shape with very little artifacting and good image steadiness. The aspect ratio is open matte 4:3.
Color and contrast rendition are very good. Images are sharp and the noise and grain level is low. Compression is solid.
In the video artifacts department it's looking good as well. While there is some minor edge enhancement apparent and noise reduction artifacts are visible at times it's never distracting and images are film-like throughout.
The sound has been remixed to DD 5.1 for a contemporary soundstage. Purists might object since the original is mono as per Kubrick's fear of multi channel sound not being presented correctly in theaters and out of this control. Purists might also dislike the 4:3 format which shows the film differently from the theatrical version which is widescreen. This also prevents 16:9 enhancement and a sharper picture for the part that was shown in theaters. Well, I like the 4:3 version but an enhanced 1.88:1 version some time would be welcome too.
