Dudes. If this wasn't straight-up the worst episode of Top Model ever, I don't know what was. Really and truly: I think this was rock bottom. Which is maybe good, because that means next week (and next cycle, I guess? hope?) will have to be better, and that gives us all something to look forward to. But for now, we'll have to do the difficult -- the nearly unthinkable, really -- and look back, back, back into the bleak abyss that was this week's episode. I call it H-to-b recapping: head to barf. On the way back from last week's elimination, »

Cast and crew of ABC's heavily diluted Witches of Eastwick retread, Eastwick, have just learned that the network will not order more episodes than the original 13 -- meaning we'll soon be bidding a fond adieu to the series most likely pitched as Supernatural Housewives. Sadly, with it goes Paul Gross -- aka Constable Benton Fraser from Due South -- who seems to be rapidly morphing into his generation's Alan Thicke. Also axed by the network: Let's Dance, the Kathy Griffin-hosted reality show in which celebrities re-enact famous dance sequences from the movies. Apparently casting was a major hurdle, as the big top-hat number from A Chorus Line requires more than the severely limited number of Kardashians currently available. On a cheerier note, Christian Slater procedural The Forgotten (no cracks, please) stays with us, for another five episodes at least. [The Feed] »

The show broke countless box office records and won every theatre award imaginable, including 12 Tonys in 2001, more than any production in history. It began as a movie, made its way to Broadway, and then found itself back on the silver screen. Now, the smash-hit musical comedy The Producers comes to the Frederick stage for the very first time!
From 2001 to 2007, the hottest tickets on the Great White Way were for Mel Brooks' first musical, which was based on his 1968 film about a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant who come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all "little old ladies") out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive Springtime For Hitler), hiring a director, »

DVD Playhouse—October 2009
By
The Wizard Of Oz 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner Bros.) A true highlight in digital restoration technology, Warner Bros. restoration of the 1939 classic is cause for celebration. The Technicolor of the late ‘30s looks as though it was shot yesterday, and is especially stunning on Blu-ray, which was produced by scanning each of the film’s original Technicolor camera negatives using 8K resolution. From this scan, a final “capture” master was created in 4K, yielding twice the resolution seen in the master utilized for the film’s previous DVD release. Judy Garland’s Dorothy is charming as ever, and the entire cast: Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley and Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch, are all stellar. Four disc set bonuses include: Sing-along track; Documentaries and featurettes; Two 1914 silent films produced by Oz author L. Frank Baum, based on his stories »

If you've been lamenting the lack of DVDs of specifically queer interest in the past few weeks, now would be a good time to check out the New Releases shelf for a song-and-dance documentary, an international romance and a potty-mouthed animated musical.

You don't have to be a Broadway fanatic to love the fascinating documentary Every Little Step, about the audition process for the 2005 revival of A Chorus Line. The directors were granted unprecedented access to the months of tryouts—and since A Chorus Line itself is a musical about an audition, the movie has a fascinating meta quality as it mirrors itself throughout.
If you're one of those people who wish the film had spent more time talking about the original production conceived by gay producer Michael Bennett in the 1970s, don't miss the DVD extras, which include lots more interviews — Donna McKechnie (above, with »

Australian playwright and Fangoria contributor Lee Gambin talks to about his brand new rock ‘n’ roll horror musical set to be unleashed on an unsuspecting public this Halloween….
How did you come to write “Oh The Horror!”? How was it conceived?
“Oh The Horror!” came from my absolute pure love for horror movies and the monsters that inhabit them. It also came from my obsession with musical theatre. I wanted to create a fun, bloody, irreverent and also heartfelt show that embraces the monster and sympathizes with the misfit. There’s something absolutely magical and comforting in the misunderstood creatures that have graced the silver screen from day one and to bring an ensemble of them together in a musical excites me and overwhelms me with sentimentality. I grew up on horror films and musicals and to marry the two genres seemed to happen extremely organically and it was a »

There's an old saying on Broadway that "the show must go on," and while that's certainly true, the adage doesn't necessarily apply to the troubled "Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark" production quite yet.
A recent report pegged the "Spider-Man" musical as back on track thanks to two new investors joining the fray to rescue our friendly neighborhood wallcrawler from his financial woes—but according to James D. Stern, one of the two alleged investors, nothing is a certainty yet.
"Yeah, I think that it would be good if people would actually talk to me before they write that sort of thing," Stern told MTV News. "It's not really—I mean, I don't know. Whether I'm involved in it or not, I don't have any idea yet."
While Stern's involvement in "Turn off the Dark" is speculative at best at this point, he nonetheless has more than enough Broadway credibility to potentially save the show. »

Bebe Neuwirth knows fame.
She was already an established (and Tony-winning) stage actress and dancer when she was cast as the hilariously emotionally repressed Dr. Lilith Stern in in the 1980-1990s TV show Cheers. The character was a huge hit with both audiences and critics, eventually landing her two Emmys.
Still, when the producers of Frasier, a Cheers spin-off, approached her to continue the role of Lilith on a regular basis in that show, she declined, choosing instead to go back to Broadway.
Boy, did she go back to Broadway! Her triumphant Tony-winning turn as Velma Kelly is the 1996 revival of Chicago is the stuff of legend.
Since then, Neuwirth worked consistently, mostly on the boards, such as the upcoming Broadway adaptation of The Adams Family, in which she plays Morticia opposite Nathan Lane’s Gomez.
But Neuwirth still acts in television and film as well, as in the new movie Fame, »

Q: Does Lucy Lawless regret that they killed Xena? – Craig, Norfolk, Va
A: In fact, she does. In “A Friend in Need,” the two-part Xena: Warrior Princess series finale back in 2001, Xena allows herself to be killed, so she can become a ghost and fight a spiritual being. Later, after Gabrielle finds a way to bring Xena back to life, the Warrior-Princess heroically chooses to stay dead in order to make amends for past sins. The series ends with Gabrielle, a full-fledged warrior at last, carrying on Xena’s legacy.
Gabrielle bids farewell to Xena
But as I’m sure you know, Craig, fans were livid – both at the death itself and over the way she died, which included, um, decapitation.
“At the time, we thought that was a really strong choice, »

...there were scrapbooks (prev. pt 1)
Let's continue that silly reveal of my "Movies of the Eighties" scrapbook. I'm still hoping to locate the "Movie Stars of the Eighties" companion volume in which I ranked all the actors and actresses of the decade. Wouldn't that be a Rotfl experience? If I can find it I will share, despite the loss of dignity it will surely occasion.
Behold! To your left is the tv guide cover that started it all. I guess it wasn't an actual TV Guide as my personal mythology has always relayed but whatever television magazine thingie was inserted into the Detroit Free Press back in the day. That cover right there started my whole Oscar obsession -- look how worn, damaged and fingered it is. I thumbed through it so many times. What is this naked gold man they call Oscar??? This cover unlocked my latent awards mania. »
