There's some good news and some bad about The Golden Girls. First the good: Betty White will be returning to The Bold and the Beautiful to resume her recurring role as Stephanie's mother, Ann Douglas. She'll be appearing on a few episodes of B&B, but it could be extended even longer depending on storyline developments.
Sadly, the bad news is that Betty's Golden Girls costar, Rue McClanahan had to cancel a Castro Theater event in San Francisco on November 14 -- a salute in her honor called "Golden: A Gala Tribute to Rue McClanahan" -- because she's had to undergo heart bypass surgery in New York.

Everyone knows Golden Girls' Blanche Devereaux wasn't one to miss a party. So it's no wonder star Rue McClanahan is "devastated" after heart trouble forced her to cancel next week's gala celebration of her Golden days. The actress had successful bypass surgery Wednesday in a New York, her rep says. "My darlings, I'm just devastated that I'm going to have to miss my own tribute," the 75-year-old Emmy winner said in a statement. "Unfortunately, my doctor has laid down the law and I'm currently having some maintenance on the old ticker. Trust me, I'd much rather be in San Francisco having fun and being adored by all of you." Worry not, Rue! We all can... »

Actress Rue McClanahan, best known for her roles on The Golden Girls and Maude, is doing well after undergoing unplanned heart bypass surgery in New York.
The hospitalization and surgery came after McClanahan made a visit to her doctor for a physical and the physician didn't like what he found.
McClanahan's representative told Access that the 74-year-old actress, "is doing absolutely great" and would likely be released in a week.
Having been ordered to stay in bed, McClanahan won't be able to attend a special event being held in her honor. Golden: A Gala Tribute to Rue McClanahan was set to be held on November 14th at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco.
In a statement to her fans from her hospital room, McClanahan told The Advocate, "My darlings, I'm just devastated that I am going to »

Former Golden Girls star Rue McClanahan has cancelled an event in her honour next week after she was hospitalised suffering from a cardiac illness.
The 75-year-old actress, best-known for her role as Blanche Devereaux on the hit series, was scheduled to appear at Golden: A Gala Tribute to Rue McClanahan at San Francisco, California's Castro Theatre.
However, McClanahan has revealed she was recently hospitalised with heart trouble, and doctors have ordered her to remain in their care until her health improves.
The star did not elaborate on her condition, but assured fans she was in good spirits.
She writes in a statement: "My darlings, I'm just devastated that I am going to have to miss my own tribute at the Castro Theatre. Unfortunately, my doctor has laid down the law, and I'm currently having some maintenance on the old ticker. I have a new obsession and her name is Barb. If you haven't been watching ABC's new series Cougar Town, then you might not know her but she's kind of amazing. Played by Carolyn Hennessy (General Hospital), Barb is the ultimate cougar but also an incredible scene-stealer. She usually just has one or two scenes per episode but completely dominates with her campy line delivery; imagine a modern-day version of The Golden Girls' Blanche Devereaux. Barb is currently competing with Glee's Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) as my favorite new character on television. Plus, this has introduced me to the fabulous Hennessy, »

In ChristWire.org's blistering exposé The Golden Girls: How One TV Show Turned A Generation Of American Boys Into Homosexuals, noted cultural theorist Stephenson Billings ("an Investigative Journalist, Motivational Children's Party Entertainer and Antique Soda Bottle Collector all in one special, blessed package!") blows the lid wide open on how Miami's beloved quartet of man-hungry retirees converted an entire generation of American males to practitioners of the slinky, sinful, apliquéd-sweater-dress-wearing homosexual lifestyle. This is powerful stuff, and certainly going to ruffle some feathers, but with passages like this one -- "Played by noted liberal activist and Archie Bunker-foe Bea Arthur, Dorothy had a hard, masculine voice. She was cold and quick-tempered. She taught our modern butt rompers to disparage everyone in their orbit" -- it simply demands to be read. [christwire.org] »

With only a few hours to bid remaining, Estelle Getty's 1988 Emmy for The Golden Girls was still listed for sale on eBay this morning, despite avowals from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences that it would seek to quash the auction. With an opening bid set at $15,000, the trophy had received no bidders. One reason may be that a similar trophy, awarded to producer Raymond Katz for The Miracle Worker in 1979, was quietly auctioned off by Bonham's just three years ago for $5,975.

Emmys chiefs are fuming over an online auction of late actress Estelle Getty's award for her supporting role in The Golden Girls.
Executives at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences are battling with bosses at eBay.com to remove the star's 1988 Emmy award from the website, reports Variety.
The Academy's guidelines state statuettes must be returned to the organisation if the winner or their heirs no longer want the award.
However, the golden prize has been placed up for auction by a private bidder with a starting price of $15,000 (£10,000).
Getty died last year at the age of 84.
As WENN went to press, there were no bidders on the item. »

Prior to being cast on The Golden Girls, Estelle Getty had worked on stage but had very little on-screen experience. She struggled for a long time to make it as an actress but being cast as Sophia Petrillo was a career-changing event.
When the popular sitcom ended after seven years on NBC, Getty continued playing the role on the short-lived CBS spin-off, The Golden Palace, and then back on NBC for Empty Nest. The actress continued to act in a few projects but retired in 2000 because of illness. She died in July 2008 at the age of 84.
Getty won an Emmy Award for her work on Golden Girls in 1987. That sitcom, as well as All in the Family and Will & Grace, are the only shows in history in which all four main actors won the coveted award. »

Estelle Getty, the matriarch of The Golden Girls and general wise-ass of the bunch passed away last year. Now, her family has put the Emmy she won for her role of Sophia Petrillo in that show up for sale on eBay. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences have strict rules about such things. If the family no longer wants the award, they are supposed to return it to the Academy.
Ms. Getty's family would hardly be the first to try and raid the treasures of a dead celebrity relative for some cash. It does seem in somewhat bad taste to sell such an honor.
On the other hand, the item hasn't even received any bids yet according to the Variety article (although that may have changed given the increase in publicity). Is it a bigger insult to sell an Emmy or that the Emmy in question hasn't received any interest from the buying public? »

Veteran actress Betty White is making a cameo in Tina Fey's show 30 Rock - after Alec Baldwin decided the veteran actress should join the comedy series.
The Golden Girls star agreed to appear as herself on the forthcoming season after she was approached by the series' creator to film scenes.
But Baldwin reveals cast members weren't choosy about who they landed for a star turn - because they drew the names of potential candidates at random.
He tells Access Hollywood, “We all put names in a hat, and we took a vote, if you could have one guest star for the whole season, who would it be? And Betty White was the winner!”
And White isn't the only star lined up for a role - Fey is convinced Justin Timberlake would be an ideal choice to appear on 30 Rock.
She adds, “We should track him down. He’d be good. I’m sure he’d totally do it - he’s not busy.” »

While theatre-goers knew Bea Arthur for her work in Mame, Fiddler on the Rood, and Bea Arthur on Broadway, those of us who love television will always remember the actress for her roles on shows like All in the Family, Maude, and The Golden Girls.
Arthur, who died in April, was indeed a veteran of both stage and television. Those two worlds will come together later this month for a special tribute to the Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress. Longtime friend and Mame co-star Angela Lansbury will host the event.
Among those either performing or offering remembrances will be Norman Lear (creator of All in the Family and Maude), Adrienne Barbeau (Maude), Rue McClanahan (The Golden Girls), Zoe Caldwell, Chita Rivera, and Billy Goldenberg, Arthur's longtime accompanist.
Celebrating Bea Arthur will be held on September 14th at the Majestic Theater »

For the second class in our EW University course on TV Auteurs, Prof. Adam B. Vary offers this overview of the TV career of Joss Whedon, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Dollhouse. Also, check out this photo gallery of our favorite shows by four legendary showrunners. What Stephen Bochco (Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, NYPD Blue), Norman Lear (All in the Family, The Jeffersons), and Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone) were in the 20th century television, Joss Whedon has become today: Nothing less than a television brand. His name alongside the "Created by" credit during the opening titles guarantees you are about to watch a show that swings for the fences; a show as keenly attuned to its female characters as its male ones; a show that tackles Big Ideas and Big Themes without skimping on Great Entertainment; a show that is unafraid to Go There, from allowing the »

On September 2 1990, just in time for the beginning of my junior year of high school, Fox debuted a new show called Parker Lewis Can’t Lose. With cautious optimism I, along with millions of other American teenage girls, watched and calculated whether or not we’d have to make room on our walls next to Corey Haim and Jason Bateman for a Corin Nemic “Tiger Beat” poster. The next day, pushpins in hand, I started making new holes in that wall.
With Ferris Buehler still fresh in our minds, and starving for some teen comedy after years of The Golden Girls, Roseanne and Cheers, Parker Lewis showed up just in time to offer some blatant silliness with memorable characters, timely jokes and creative effects. Taking place at Santo Domingo High School, Parker (Corin Nemec) who narrates the show, and his two partners in crime, Mikey (Billy Jayne, better known as »
