Clash of the Titans Trailer Goes to Hell

10 November 2009 8:00 PM, PST | E! Online | See recent E! Online - Movies and Television news »

The gods must be crazy. And who can blame them? This pure sensory overload trailer is enough to make anyone crazy: scorpion-like monsters, brutal carnage and so many quick cuts you'd think they used one of the swords to edit the damn thing. Not to mention it's got the heaviest soundtrack since This Is Spinal Tap. In this redo of the 1981 campfest Clash of the Titans, Sam Worthington plays Perseus, the half-divine son of Liam Neeson's Zeus who's on a gamer mission that finds him leaping into the underworld of Hades, played by Ralph Fiennes. Depending on your cinematic needs, this could be the best thing since 300 or the worst rip on it. What say you?... »

The World Series, Hideki Matsui and Mariah Carey In Today's Twitter-Wood

5 November 2009 3:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Yankees supporters were out in force last night, and a few Twitter-Wood citizens were right by the field uploading pics. Brody Stevens may have shot the most enviable of the day, apparently getting soon-to-be-mvp Hideki Matsui in the dugout before the game. Jeremy Piven caught another high-quality photo-op, though, standing with his fellow Chicagoan Brian Urlacher.

Poor John Favreau was stuck in the editing room for "Iron Man 2," though, which he noted on his account. Larry King, Eliza Dushku and other added their thoughts after Phillies finally went down. Check out all of their tweets, along with Brett Ratner's pic with Mariah Carey after wrapping her video and Andy Milonakis. They're all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 5, 2009.

Entertainment Weekly Lists the 25 Best Soundtracks from the Past 25 Years

3 November 2009 2:34 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I’m no music expert what with their fancy degrees and ability to appreciate music beyond “This sounds good.”  But I do know lists and lists generate controversy and controversy equals traffic!  And with their patented “slideshow” format which creates more hits based on an itemized story, EW.com has a real racket going!

Well, we just listed it like normal people after the jump.  Take a look, see if you agree, and scream your disbelief at how a certain album you love wasn’t included.  Also, remember that this is a list of soundtracks which are usually a collection of songs used in a movie as opposed to a score which is usually the instrumental accompaniment to the film created by a single composer (although there are obviously scores created by more than one composer).

If you want to click through the list like a chump, click here. It »

Sound On Sight Radio #164: Anvil the story of Anvil

26 October 2009 11:54 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Now that it's finally hit DVD, Sound on Sight takes a long-delayed look at a documentary that some are lauding as one of the year's best: Anvil: The Story of Anvil, which chronicles its titular Toronto metal band as they attempt to stage an ambitious European comeback tour after years of complete obscurity. To tie in to that film, we'll also be talking about the similarly inclined doc Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, as well as the legendary mockumentary that winds up informing both docs quite a bit : Rob Reiner's This Is Spinal Tap. From 'Spinal Tap' to 'Machete' to 'Black Dynamite': My favorite movie parodies put the machete to reality

16 October 2009 3:27 PM, PDT | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

When you think about movie parodies -- we could be talking Airplane!, the Austin Powers films, or one of those great old Mad magazine satires, which were really the first place that a lot of us, as kids, got to "see" movies made for adults -- the key to a terrific send-up would seem to be the art of exaggeration, pure and simple. But there’s a particular brand of cinematic parody that I love, at this point, almost more than any other. And though it does employ the art of exaggeration (in very, very deadpan ways), far more than that, »

Watch This: 'Guardian' Writer At (Sort Of) Real-Life Fight Club

13 October 2009 12:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

"Like many of you, I was stuck," narrates Guardian writer Paul MacInnes in his best Chuck Palahniuk-style monotone. "I looked at blog after blog, trying to find some Star Wars fan site that would justify my existence. This was my life, and it was ending one minute at a time." In a very funny take on Fight Club, MacInnes' short video has the frustrated blogger receiving an e-mail that invites him to a "dodgy warehouse," and finds him taking part in a stage-fighting workshop where he gets the chance to beat up a writer from Men's Fitness magazine.

The workshop, it turns out, was a publicity event put on by Jameson's Irish Whiskey's Cult Film Club, a London film series that features movies like Trainspotting, This is Spinal Tap and, of course, Fight Club. The movies are all free, and the website promises a complimentary glass of Jameson's, »

Heavy Metal Band Anvil Gets Cameo in Green Hornet

12 October 2009 2:56 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

It seems Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry are Anvil fans. The La Times writes that the heavy metal band, which achieved its peak popularity in the '80s, will get a cameo in The Green Hornet. The newest adaptation based on the comic-book hero is being directed by Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) and stars Rogen, who also helped draft the script.

Apparently, Anvil will make an appearance in a rock club as themselves. They'll play some songs and then ... explode? Well, that's what's written. We'll have to wait and see what that means.

The band was the focus of a recent critically acclaimed documentary directed by Sacha Gervasi. A tragicomic then-and-now look at faded stardom, Anvil! The Story of Anvil is often times cited as a real-life counterpart to This Is Spinal Tap. The movie won an Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature at the La Film Festival. »

Top 5 Movies That Scared the Hell Out of Me

3 October 2009 8:07 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Ya’ know, since it’s Halloween coming up at the end of the month, I thought it would be appropriate to make a list of the top 5 movies that, for whatever reason, just scared the hell out of me. It may not be the entire movie, maybe it was just a particular scene/moment; they may not be the technically Best horror movies (they may not even be strictly “horror” per se.), but just something about them had me hiding behind the pillow, jumping at every noise, looking through the cracks in my fingers, thinking about it for days afterwards, and… changing my underwear — okay, too much information…

Before I get on with the list, just know that (like every list) this is purely opinion and therefore it obviously isn’t going to match Your list. If a movie that you find particularly scary isn’t on my list then »

Gil Birmingham Playing On The Set Of 'Eclipse' And Miley Cyrus Is Feeling Better In Today's Twitter-Wood

2 October 2009 4:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Warmoth's out again today. He hates me, you see. Really though, he busts his rear for this column and he gets a break whenever he wants it. The Twitter-Wood was relatively quiet today, but not so quiet that I've got nothing for you. Aubrey O'Day made some noise with a fairly scandalous TwitPic, the one that earned today's Twitter Pic of the Day honors. There were some strong runner-up contenders however from Danny Masterson and Fred Durst.

On the text tweet front, Amber Benson talks about her painful future as a roller derby girl, Rainn Wilson makes a startling observation, Michael McKean comes up with a brilliant movie idea and Ice-t addresses a very personal rumor. Plus, Gil Birmingham from the totally unpopular "Twilight" series brings an update from the set of "Eclipse." I'm @geminibros and this is your Twitter-Wood for October 2, 2009. Have a kickass weekend, y'all.

Watch:[p]Anvil! The Story of Anvil

1 October 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

'It's the best metal band I've heard play live in a movie theater.' No, this isn't a line from a This is Spinal Tap sequel. It was one attendee's reaction to Tuesday night's screening of Anvil! The Story of Anvil at the Village East Cinemas - which was followed by a live (and very loud) performance by the members of Anvil. For those unfamiliar with '80s Canadian heavy metal, Anvil was one of the 'heaviest'; they influenced some of the biggest bands in the genre: Anthrax, Metallica, Slayer. They shared the stage with the likes of Judas Priest and The Scorpions. But unlike them, Anvil fell into obscurity. Fast-forward 30 years, and the band's founders, Steve 'Lips' Kudlow and drummer Robb Reiner (no relation), are struggling to keep their dream of a comeback alive. Since their seminal 1982 release Metal on Metal, the boyhood friends still play in and around »

Anvil! The Story Of Anvil! DVD Review

26 September 2009 7:22 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Anvil! The Story of Anvil! is the most entertaining behind the scenes look at a heavy metal band since This is Spinal Tap, which is saying a lot.  In fact, the two movies are so similar, one could easily assume Anvil is as fictitious as Spinal Tap.  But it’s not.  Funny, heartbreaking, inspirational and insightful, Anvil! The Story of Anvil! is a true, uncompromising look at a shot of near-stardom. My review after the jump:

The band, comprised of Robb Reiner (ironically sharing the same name - but different spelling - of the director of Spinal Tap) who performs drums and Steve Kudlow (aka “Lips”), who plays lead guitar and sings lyrics, was once upon a time - the 1980s, too be more specific - on the verge of heavy metal rock band greatness.  Exactly when groups like Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer were crushing the airwaves on the headbanging music scene. »

Henry Gibson, 'Toy Story 3' T-Shirts And Carrying Kristen Stewart In Today's Twitter-Wood

17 September 2009 3:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

If you haven't seen the T-shirts being given out to the crew for "Toy Story 3," you're definitely going to want to check out director Lee Unkrich's posts today. They're must-sees Disney and Pixar fans. I almost gave him Twitter Pic of the Day status, too, but Kevin Nealon's shot with Sarah Silverman in a headlock edged them all out. Furthermore, I couldn't pick just one side of one of the shirts to spotlight.

I've also got a nice memory of actor Henry Gibson, who passed away yesterday, thoughtfully tweeted by actor Michael McKean. You can check that out at the top of the Twitter-Wood rundown today, along with a David Slade "Eclipse" tweet, a TwitPic from Peter Facinelli out in the forest, and a note about Tom Arnold's bachelor party. I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter-Wood report for September 17, 2009.

Five Rules for Great DVD Commentaries

10 September 2009 4:15 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Whenever someone asks me what my favorite DVD special feature is, I always pick audio commentary. But from talking with other cinephiles and casual film fans alike, I've begun to feel like I'm in the minority. I hear the same complaints, over and over, about filmmaker tracks: they're boring, they're uninformative, and so on. To which I always reply, you don't like them because you're not listening to the right ones.

There are plenty of bad commentary tracks out there, but there are plenty of bad movies out there too; the trick is to find the good ones. From my highly subjective perspective, here are the rules that govern all great DVD commentary tracks.

1. Don't Just Tell Us What's Happening on the Screen

Just about the worst thing you can do on a commentary track is simply reiterate what the audience is seeing. Thankfully, it's not an especially common phenomenon nowadays, »

Watch The Trailer For 'Le Donk And Scor-Zay-Zee'

TotalFilm.com favourites Shane Meadows and Paddy Considine - the team behind the fantastic Dead Man's Shoes - have been hard at work on a brand new project; a music mockumentary called Le Donk. Recently retitled, Le Donk and Scor-zay-zee follows Paddy Considine's legendary roadie Le Donk as he attempts to get his protoge, up coming Nottingham rapper Scor-zay-zee (Dean Palinczuk), on stage with the Arctic Monkeys. Sitting somewhere between This Is Spinal Tap and Steve Coogan's Tommy Saxondale, this is the first of...

Hello, Cleveland: UK 'Spinal Tap: Up to 11' Blu-ray

6 September 2009 12:40 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

I had no idea this was immenent: A new DVD and Blu-ray version of This is Spinal Tap is headed to stores next week. Seriously, how did I not know about this? It's the appropriately named Up to 11 edition, and you can get it starting Monday the 7th instead of the traditional Tuesday release.

Here's what you can get: Five discs, including the re-mastered film, a 25th anniversary documentary featuring Ricky Gervais, Eddie Izzard, and more, the Return of Spinal Tap concert at Royal Albert Hall, Stonehenge interviews with Nigel Tufnel produced by National Geographic, tons of unused video features and outtakes, the soundtrack, and more.

Certainly, this is just for the collectors. The DVD/Blu-ray has been done several times for Tap over the years, so if you already have a recent version, all you'd be getting is filler, even if it is good filler.

Here's one quirk: This is apparently a UK-only release, »

Russell Crowe Solves Crime, Soderbergh Does Sexy And More, In The DVD Report For Tuesday, September 1

1 September 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

As the summer season closes out, what's probably the slowest week of the year for DVDs has arrived. Only one wide release film is on the slate, and even the catalog titles and television box sets are light. Regardless, we'll stifle a sigh and press on like always with this week's DVD Report.

"State of Play" is a murder mystery whodunit, subbing in reporters for cops. Russell Crowe plays an old school, boots-on-the-ground investigative journalist who doesn't get the whole blogging thing. He also happens to be old college roommates with a powerful politician who, whoops, just had his mistress offed, sending Crowe on a mission to uncover a growing conspiracy behind the killing. The film comes from director Kevin MacDonald, who showed great promise with "Last King of Scotland," and its cast roster is filled with heavy-hitting names like Rachel McAdams, Helen Mirren, Jeff Daniels, Robin Wright Penn, Ben Affleck and Jason Bateman. »
