Fabulous novel of Ismael Kadaré (Albania) and a great idea to put it on screen. Unfortunately the symbolic value of the novel does not appear so clearly on the screen. it is the criticism of a Stalinist state where commemoration of past "victories" and people's supposed uprisings was taking precedence over the management of present life and the preparation of the future. We all know the outcome...
An Italian general looking for the bodies of men fallen in a past conflict and roaming the bare and cold mountains of Northern Albania.... Great cast, great idea but there is something missing to turn it into a good movie.
Perhaps Kadaré would know.
