Indira Gandhi, India's first and only female Prime Minister, is getting a much-deserved biopic, and big name actors are being wooed for star-studded cameos. According to The Daily Telegraph, Helen Mirren is in talks to return to the role of Queen Elizabeth II, who she won an Oscar for playing in 2006's "The Queen." Emily Watson, meanwhile, has been cast as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Other expected -- or at least sought-after -- portrayals include Tom Hanks as Lyndon Johnson, Tommy Lee Jones as Richard Nixon and Albert Finney as British actor Peter Ustinov.
The biopic, titled "Mother: The Indira Gandhi Story," will be released in two parts, a la Steven Soderbergh's "Che" films. Both will be directed by Indian filmmaker Krishna Shah, who last helmed a pair of American B-movies called "Hard Rock Zombies" and "American Drive-In" back in 1985. Since then he seems to have primarily »

Don't believe in rumours - it is wisely said. Hours before Sir Ben Kingsley was to arrive in Panaji for the 40th edition of the International Film Festival of India (Iffi), the venue was abuzz with rumours of Shah Rukh Khan dropping by at the Iffi venue at the same time.By afternoon, even mediapersons were bitten by the Srk bug. Some insisted that the Bollywood superstar and Sir Kingsley would be addressing a joint press conference.King Khan finally did not arrive for the Iffi. Turns out that the confusion had arisen after the organisers had flashed messages that Sbk (initials of Sir Ben Kingsley) would be addressing the media on Monday afternoon. And Sbk had mutated into Srk (Shah Rukh Khan's initials) in a matter of minutes, which had the rumour mills working furiously.'We had heard that Srk was coming. There were messages floating around that »

Of all the great qualities of cinema, its ability to evoke empathy is probably its best. I have never been to India, but it’s easy to gain an appreciation for the country when the spirit of it is captured on film. That’s what I felt while watching Gandhi. People can talk about dramatic license and inaccuracies, but it’s really a beautiful film. According to The Guardian, the star of Gandhi, Ben Kingsley, is now planning to produce and act in a new movie about Shah Jahan, who ruled over the Mughal empire in present day India between 1628 and 1658. The name of the film, Taj, comes from the Taj Mahal, which was built during his reign. Ben Kingsley is quoted as saying: “With my passion for India and the Taj Mahal now becoming one of the seven wonders of the World, I am compelled to ask ‘why’ and »

Back in 1982, Ben Kingsley gave a world renowned Oscar winning performance playing Gandhi in Richard Attenborough's Gandhi. He's never played him again, and probably never will, leaving that performance to live on forever. However, according to The Guardian, Kingsley is now attached to play another "instrumental figure in Indian history" as Shah Jahan, the man who built the Taj Mahal back in the 1600s. Sbk Pictures, Kingsley's company, made the announcement recently and confirmed that Kingsley would be producing as well. Taj, as the project will be titled, will have a $25 to $30 million budget (which is pretty big for India). "With my passion for India and the Taj Mahal now becoming one of the seven wonders of the World, I am compelled to ask 'why' and 'how' this scream of grief frozen in marble came into being," Kingsley said in the statement. "It is an indelible monument to ... »

Anglo-Indian actor Sir Ben Kingsley - real name Krishna Pandit Vhanji - is to be seen rebuilding the Taj Mahal in the epic period movie Taj. He will be playing the role of Shah Jahan who created the monument in honour of his wife Mumtaz, who dies whilst giving birth to his 14th child. "With my passion for India and the Taj Mahal now becoming one of the Seven Wonders of the World, I am compelled to ask 'why' and 'how' this scream of grief frozen in marble came into being," said Sir Ben. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will play Mumtaz.
Although famous for his Oscar-winning role in Gandhi nearly thirty years ago, Sir Ben’s first Bollywood movie won’t appear until next year. Teen Patti is due for release on February 12th. In 1982, Ben Kingsley became Mahatma Gandhi in Richard Attenborough's Gandhi. The film instantly became a classic and went on to dominate the Oscars, earning Best Picture, Director, Actor, Writing, Editing, Costume Design, Cinematography, and Art Direction. And even though those are ridiculously enormous shoes to fill, the Guardian reports that Kingsley is heading back to Indian history to play Shah Jahan, the emperor who built the Taj Mahal.
Back in the mid-1600s, Shah Jahan was a Mughal Emperor who was devastated when his favorite (third) wife Mumtaz Mahal died while giving birth to their fourteenth child. In her honor, he decided to erect a grand mausoleum that would not only be epically impressive and beautiful, but also so glorious that sins would be washed away. It took roughly 21 years to create and has been included on some Seven Wonders of the World lists.

Gandhi star Sir Ben Kingsley will travel back in time to delve deeper into Indian history - he's set to portray the emperor who built the Taj Mahal.
The Oscar-winning actor has signed to play Shah Jahan in Taj, opposite Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as his wife Mumtaz Mahal.
The emperor ordered the construction of the Indian landmark in 1632 in memory of his third wife, who had died while giving birth to their 14th child.
Mahal's body was later stored in the tomb of the architectural wonder.
Kingsley's production company Sbk Pictures will back the project, which is estimated at between $25 and $30 million (£15.6 and £18.75 million).
In a statement, Kingsley says, "With my passion for India and the Taj Mahal now becoming one of the Seven Wonders of the World, I am compelled to ask 'why' and 'how' this scream of grief frozen in marble came into being." »

Today marks the birthday of Mohandas Gandhi, the worldwide father of civil disobedience and peaceful revolution. It's a national holiday in India, as well as a day where the world is meant to reflect on non-violent alternatives. Gandhi began his professional life as a lawyer who fought for civil rights in South Africa, then returned home to his native India for a spiritual and political career that saw him fight for the rights of women and religious freedom. The centerpiece of his work were the peaceful protests he organized, many of which were to stand against the tyranny of outside influences and taxes from the British. Through the power of fasts, sit-ins and other forms of non-violent protest, Gandhi laid the ground work for a number of other peaceful movements worldwide — including the civil rights movement in the United States. Tragically, the man who made his life setting aside violence »
