Naples shorn of its rags, 10 April 2000
Author: Eric Sayettat (sayettat@hotmail.com) from Auckland, New Zealand

Only one comment... and negative. The movie was not a great one but one has to remember it is based on the novel of Malaparte who liked to shock in his tales of the second world war (most of them true !) and who observed the advance of Allied Armies from his villa on the cliffs of Capri (nice view !). Liliana Cavani in her turn has some kind of fascination for the bizarre sides of life...remember Night Porter (Portier de Nuit).

1944 was a time when Naples had nothing else but her skin to sell in order to survive... the allied troops (US, French,...) where a bonanza for many... they behaved like a mammoth in a China shop... but who blames them, the agenda was to win the war !

La Pelle is interesting and quite harrowing, not a modern Holywood style more like New York cinema... and altogether a sensible testimony.
