  • Haruki Kadokawa was the heir to a major publishing empire. He entered the film business in the mid-1970s with some high profile features. This was to be his big breakthrough in the international market. He tried to insure its success by casting some U.S. stars and doing major international promotion (under the international title "Virus"). It became a major failure. Although it may have had some special showings in the United States, it did not receive a general release. It was sold directly to pay-tv in an edited 108 minute version.

  • Haruki Kadokawa originally wanted John Frankenheimer to direct this film.

  • This film gained some international publicity when a Swedish ship, the MS Lindblad Explorer, transporting a production unit to Antartica for location shooting, struck a submerged reef and almost sunk. Passengers were rescued by Chilean navy ships.

  • The Chilean Navy gave strong support in filming this movie. The two submarines that appear in some scenes are in fact the same one, the CNS Simpson.

  • Interior shots for the two submarines were filmed aboard the Canadian submarine HMCS Okanagan. One of her officers also has a small role in the film.
