Updated: We have added a production still and a concept piece which has been provided for us, both of which are after the break. We have also been informed that this is not a "retro-futuristic thriller" (although the synopsis sounds like it) and it's more in the vein of The Prestige or The Elephant Man.
Eugenio Mira (The Birthday) is at work on his second feature length film entitled Agnosia which stars Eduardo Noriega, Bárbara Goenaga, Felix Gomez, Lluis Homar and Martina Gedeck. Billed as a baroque, retro-futuristic thriller, it's about an optician who designs a massive deadly lens and is set in Spain in the late 19th century. With a screenplay written by Antonio Trashorras (The Devil's Backbone). Word is that shooting will start this month (if it's not already underway).
I'm trying to get more details, so stay tuned!
To boot, you can check out Mira's incredibly stylish »

John Hurt has been one of Britain's finest acting talents since his career began in the 60s, but it's his roles in films like Alien, Midnight Express and The Elephant Man -- to name a few -- which put him on the international map and for which he's best remembered. At the Dinard Festival of British Film last month to screen An Englishman in New York, a biopic of gay writer Quentin Crisp's time in the Big Apple, Hurt sat down with Rt to talk about the film and his wider career, including Alien, Indiana Jones and his upcoming turn... »

As part of the 53rd London Film Festival the BFI will be making John Hurt its latest Fellow, according to the BBC.
Hurt has acted in over 150 film and TV productions, from the fuzzy black and white of early UK tv series to the biggest Hollywood blockbusters of the day, he is an outstanding actor who brings a sublime, gentle energy to each role. From his iconic turn in The Naked Civil Servant to the role of Mr Ollivander in the Harry Potter films, every role is as unique as the last. That the BFI have chosen to single out one of our finest actors is testament to the quality of his work.
Coincidentally I watched Hurt suffer a heart stopping Heimlich in Ridley Scott’s Alien last night and am now watching the 1997 Robert Zemeckis film Contact, in which Hurt plays a billionaire philanthropist with cosmic ambitions. In both films he steals every scene, »

Chicago – Start planning your Halloween marathon now. Last week, we highlighted the Universal wave of titles that included greats like “Shaun of the Dead” and “Army of Darkness” and we’re back with another wave of modern horror classics, including Oscar winners “Silence of the Lambs” and “Misery”.
The Blu-Ray Round-Up, HollywoodChicago.com’s regular column that highlights synopsis, tech details, and special features for titles that might otherwise fall through your Blu-Ray buying cracks, doesn’t usually play favorites, but every good horror fan should have “Manhunter,” “Silence,” “Child’s Play,” and “Misery” in their collection. Whether or not you need to own the “Wrong Turn” films is something only you can decide.
All five titles were released last week, September 15th, 2009. Both “Child’s Play” and “Misery” are presented in a Bd/DVD combo pack with both HD and standard versions of the film.

The idea of Adam Sandler backing a horror film (under his new Scary Madison banner) needn’t automatically be a negative one; after all, funnyman Mel Brooks’ productions have included the modern classic The Fly, the darkly brilliant The Elephant Man and best-selling zombie author Max Brooks. And, as is revealed on the DVD (coming September 29 from Anchor Bay) of Scary Madison’s first feature The Shortcut, Sandler—who doesn’t take an onscreen credit—and co. were all about making it an R-rated feature; it was the financiers who came on board during preproduction who insisted it be watered down for youth-audience consumption.
The result is a movie that feels awkwardly caught between competing ambitions. It dances around dark territory without fully committing, putting an equal emphasis on typical screen-teen behavior; people die, but little onscreen blood is shed. (There are any number of action flicks, and even horror films, »

Filmmaker Jennifer Lynch
Jennifer Lynch Turns Her Eye On Surveillance
By
Few filmmakers have survived the professional excoriation that writer/director Jennifer Lynch had to face with her film debut Boxing Helena, in 1993. In spite of being nominated for a Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, the film was universally massacred by critics and tanked at the box office (it has since garnered an impressive cult following, with more than a few of its naysayers penning re-evaluations of the film and its merits). Having penned the script of Boxing Helena at the age of 19, and seeming to be washed up in show business by 25, Lynch spent the next decade and a half surviving a near-fatal car accident which left her with severe spinal damage, adjusting to life as a single parent with a young daughter, and getting sober after years of alcohol and drug abuse. Modern Primitives Films has announced the second feature film by writer-director Michael Z. Wechsler, entitled The Red Robin. Pitched as a blend of The Celebration and The Manchurian Candidate, the plot focuses on a family reunion which goes very awry when the youngest son accuses his ailing father, a famed psychiatrist, of using his own adopted children as guinea pigs for psychological experiments for the CIA.
The cast includes Jeremy Sisto ("Law and Order", Waitress, "Six Feet Under"), Claire Forlani (Meet Joe Black), Hill Harper ("CSI: N.Y.", Get on the Bus ), and Roger Guenveur Smith (American Gangster). Jonathan Sanger (The Producers, The Elephant Man) is on board as executive producer.
Wechsler has directed series for the BBC and Bravo and previously helmed the feature film Slaves of Hollywood, which also starred Harper. Slaves of Hollywood was a selection at 35 international film festivals and was awarded “Best »

Moby has released a music video for the "Shot in the Back of the Head" song from the "Wait for Me" album. The animated video is directed by David Lynch (Dune, The Elephant Man, Mulholland Dr) and you can watch it below. Moby spoke about the album and working with David Lynch: "I started working on the album about a year ago, and the creative impetus behind the record was hearing a David Lynch speech at BAFTA, in the UK. David was talking about creativity, and to paraphrase, about how creativity in and of itself, and without market pressures, is fine and good. The first single is called 'Shot in the Back of the Head,' and I'm happy to announce that David Lynch has done the video for it. I sent him the music and said, 'please do whatever you want.' So he sat down and drew »

A list like this is highly subjective; there's no way around it. But I think we can all say that some bests are better than others. How many of us would argue that Rex Harrison gave one of the greatest performances ever in My Fair Lady? Exactly. Don't make me bring up Roberto Benigni...
So ranking the best Best Actors involves an awful lot of conjecture. There are a couple on our list that might not be as high on your list and vice versa, but the real question is how well this year's winner - whether it's Sean Penn or Mickey Rourke - stacks up against the others. On first glance, I've gotta say the advantage goes to history in this case.
1 - Robert De Niro - Raging Bull (1980)
Without a doubt, this is the most significant performance in one of the most significant acting careers of the 20th century. »
