A former prosecutor says Polanski out of luck, despite victim's pleas

26 October 2009 8:30 PM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

A former prosecutor, William Moran, claims that pleas of Polanski's victim will not change the legal course for the director. Roman Polanski's arrest has allegedly caused his victim Samantha Geimer health problems and job loss concerns, and she just wants to be left alone, her attorney wrote in a court filing. Attorney Lawrence Silver urged a California appeals court to dismiss the criminal case against the "Chinatown" director. The filing with the Second District Court of Appeal on Friday said Samantha Geimer and Silver have received over 500 media calls seeking comment since Polanski was arrested in Switzerland on Sept. 26. The victim in the Roman Polanski child sex case has renewed calls for the case against the director to be dismissed and urged the media to leave her alone, court filings showed.Lawyers for Samantha Geimer made the request in a court motion filed in Los Angeles on Friday, the latest of several pleas she has made for authorities to throw out the 1977 criminal case against Polanski. The motion said Geimer, who now lives in Hawaii with her husband and children, has suffered health problems and job worries after a media "frenzy" following Polanski's arrest in Switzerland last month. It cited calls by CNN's Larry King, Us talkshow queen Oprah Winfrey, "every" national network morning show, three Los Angeles Times reporters and "nearly every major newspaper" from the United States and around the world."Between Samantha and her counsel, they have received close »

Chinatown's 35th Anniversary Edition and the Polanski Scandal

24 October 2009 12:05 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

In one of the great ironies, the 35th anniversary edition of Chinatown came out this month, nearly at the same time that its director, Roman Polanski, was arrested in Switzerland after fleeing Los Angeles over 30 years ago following a downward guilty plea and brief imprisonment for unlawful sex with a minor. Chinatown, the tale of a smart, tough detective investigating what he thinks, at first, is a simple case of infidelity in late 1930s Los Angeles, is my favorite film. On the surface, it's a period detective picture, a big Hollywood movie with the trappings of film noir. Beneath, it's much more. Armed with an alarmingly intelligent screenplay by Robert Towne, brilliantly cast -- from stars Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway down through the extras -- the film creates its own mesmerizing world through evocative music, costuming, and... »

Polanski Watch – Further Updates

24 October 2009 9:32 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Roman Polanski may at last be facing his Chinatown moment as the Us authorities move ever close to extraditing him to face sentencing in connection with his 1978 conviction for unlawful sex with a minor.

Matters were complicated for the Director on Tuesday when Switzerland’s highest court formally rejected Polanski’s appeal to be released on bail. Judging that he posed a high flight risk, prosecutors ruled that The Ghost director must remain in Swiss custody “during the entire extradition proceedings.” Explaining their decision to back an earlier government ruling that Polanski would be highly likely to flout any bail conditions, Swiss authorities told the press that “The court considered the risk that Roman Polanski might flee if released from custody as high.”

Although Polanski must now await the result of a Us application to have him extradited, his lawyer, Herve Temime told the media that a further appeal would »

Swiss Officials Defend Polanski Arrest

21 October 2009 9:01 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

One of Switzerland's top judges has defended the authorities' decision to tip off U.S. officials about director Roman Polanski's whereabouts, leading to his arrest in Zurich last month.

The Chinatown moviemaker was taken into custody on a 1977 child sex charge after landing in the city for the Zurich Film Festival, where he was to be honoured.

Polanski is wanted by U.S. police after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl in Los Angeles and then fleeing to France before he was due to be sentenced in 1978.

But the law caught up with him in September when he was captured by Swiss authorities.

The director, who has had two requests for bail denied, is now awaiting a decision to see if he'll be extradited back to America to receive his punishment.

E-mail correspondence obtained by the press this week reveal it was officials at the Swiss Federal Office of Justice who sent an urgent fax message to the U.S. Office of International Affairs on 22 September, informing them of Polanski's plans to travel to Zurich and prompting them to issue an international arrest warrant.

Swiss authorities have been criticised for appearing to instigate Polanski's arrest, but Justice Ministry spokesman Folco Galli insists they were simply following proper police procedure in notifying their U.S. counterparts.

Defending the move, Galli says, "An arrest is a big operation. If we know a wanted individual is coming, we always ask if the arrest warrant is valid. The Americans immediately confirmed that was the case."

Meanwhile, Polanski's French lawyer Georges Kiejman admits the filmmaker may stop fighting extradition and return to the U.S. to face the consequences of his actions.

Kiejman says, "If the proceedings drag on, it's not completely impossible that Roman Polanski might decide to go explain himself in the United States, where there are arguments in his favour."

The director has until 29 October to appeal the bail decision, while U.S. police must file a formal extradition request by 25 November if they want Polanski to return to face justice. »

Roman Polanksi released from prison... for medical reasons

19 October 2009 2:20 PM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Roman Polanski has been released from prison to receive medical care.

The 76-year-old director - who faces being extradited to America from France after fleeing to the country in 1978 when he was convicted of unlawful sex with a minor - was taken to an undisclosed hospital from his Swiss jail to get the necessary treatment.

His French lawyer Herve Temime said: "All I know is that he has been taken from prison for medical attention. I don't know where he is or when he will be returned to prison."

A spokesperson for Switzerland's Federal Office of Justice insisted the filmmaker is still under legal supervision, saying: "He is still in detention. If necessary he has all the medical care needed. It can be in prison or in hospital, in general."

Polanski was arrested in Switzerland last month and taken to jail, where he is awaiting to find out whether he will be extradited. »

Polanski Undergoes Medical Treatment

18 October 2009 7:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Director Roman Polanski has been removed from a Swiss prison for medical treatment.

The moviemaker, who fled to France in 1978 as he awaited sentencing for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl, has been behind bars since he was arrested in Switzerland while attending a film festival in Zurich last month.

But now the 76 year old has been granted leave from jail to seek treatment for an unknown medical condition, according to his French lawyer.

Herve Temime says, "All I know is that he has been taken from prison for medical attention. I don't know where he is or when he will be returned to prison."

Polanski is fighting extradition to America, where prosecutors hope to conclude his sentencing.

Temime told reporters last week he was worried about the incarcerated Chinatown director's condition, insisting Polanski was "tired and depressed" and in an "unsettled state of mind" when he last visited him. »

Roman Polanski Attempting to Finish Latest Film Ghost From Prison

16 October 2009 12:53 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It’s nothing new that prisoners will try to control their affairs on the outside despite their imprisonment.  Some prisoners conduct a relationship with their sweetie, some prisoners conduct their drug cartel, and some prisoners conduct their sweetie’s drug cartel.  But it’s rare that a prisoner tries to complete his film while in confinement.  However, that’s exactly what recently incarcerated director Roman Polanski is trying to do from his cell in Switzerland in an attempt to finish post-production on his latest (and possibly last film, depending on how long he’s locked up), “The Ghost”.

Hit the jump for details and to wonder if Polanski’s fellow inmates will choose their treatment of the director based on a love of “Chinatown” or a love of raping sex offenders.

Before his arrest, Polanski had already finished a rough cut of the film.  The film stars Pierce Brosnan as »

Director Roman Polanski is finishing work on his latest film from a Swiss jail where he is fighting extradition to the United States on a 1977 sex charge, writer Robert Harris was quoted as saying on Wednesday.Harris, who wrote the screenplay for the movie, "The Ghost," told The Times newspaper in London Polanski wanted to finish the movie in time for its planned premiere at the Berlin film festival in February."He (Polanski) can make his wishes known from his cell. I don't think he can make phone calls, but he can communicate," Harris told The Times."What people think of the film is another matter. Whether the film can rise above the circumstances in which the director now finds himself I don't know. We will test to the upper limits the notion that there's no such thing as bad publicity," he added.Polanski, »

Wes Anderson's Absence Angers Fantastic Mr. Fox Crew

13 October 2009 2:56 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

All is not well in the world of Fantastic Mr. Fox. The stop-motion animation feature — which is based on the children's book by Roald Dahl — is still due out in a little over a month. But according to recent reports, the project has been hampered by unhappy relations between director Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, and Darjeeling Limited) and his crew.

Digital Spy writes that Anderson apparently took a hike for most of the on-site production's one-year duration, choosing instead to correspond with crew members by email from a residence in Paris.

Understandably, many of the crew members are a bit upset, perhaps none more than director of photography Tristan Oliver. Speaking to the press, he seemed to release some pent-up resentment when he lashed out at Anderson, and he made sure he pulled no punches:

It's not in the least bit normal. I've never worked on a picture »

Polanski 'Depressed' Behind Bars

12 October 2009 1:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Incarcerated director Roman Polanski is "tired and depressed" as he battles extradition to the U.S. to face sentencing for a child sex conviction, according to his lawyer.

The Chinatown filmmaker has been behind bars in Zurich, Switzerland since 26 September, when he was arrested in connection to a 1977 child sex crime.

Swiss officials denied his appeal for release on Tuesday.

But his attorney remains hopeful Polanski will soon be able to leave prison while waiting for a decision on his extradition - because the ageing filmmaker is suffering behind bars.

Herve Temime says, "I found him to be tired and depressed... Roman Polanski, who is 76, seemed very dejected when I visited him. Polanski was in an unsettled state of mind."

Temime expects authorities at the Swiss Federal Penal Court will decide "very soon" if Polanski can be released on bail, adding, "He would fulfil all the conditions and stay in Switzerland until the extradition proceedings are decided." »

Polanski Appeal Branded Irrelevant By Prosecutors

10 October 2009 7:21 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Prosecutors in Los Angeles are asking a judge to dismiss Roman Polanski's appeal against child sex charges - insisting his original objections in the case no longer apply.

The Chinatown filmmaker has been behind bars in Zurich, Switzerland since 26 September, when he was arrested in connection to a 1977 child sex crime. He is currently fighting extradition to the U.S. to face sentencing.

In May, prior to his arrest, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Peter Espinoza rejected a request by Polanski's attorneys to dismiss the criminal case, based on allegations of unethical and improper acts by a judge and prosecutor at the time of the director's original charges.

Lawyers for Polanski have refused to give up, but head Deputy District Attorney Irene Wakabayashi and Deputy District Attorney Phyllis C. Asayama have written to the California Second District Court of Appeal arguing the court just needs to decide whether to hold a hearing without the Polanski's presence.

Polanski's lawyers have asked the court to schedule expedited oral arguments on the issue of whether the director must be present in a California court for consideration of his appeal.

The letter says, "Because of petitioner's subsequent arrest, the question posed is now academic. Petitioner will be extradited and able to be physically present to make the request and to be present at a hearing." »

Forget It Bob, It’S Chinatown

Robert Towne looks back on Chinatown’s 35th anniversary

By

Alex Simon

The haunting trumpet wailing plaintively over the closing credits. The bandage covering star Jack Nicholson’s nose. The best last line of a movie, ever: “Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown"; all elements of a film now regarded by scholars, critics and cinefiles alike as one of the greatest pieces of American celluloid ever made. Chinatown was a collaboration between a who’s-who of ‘70s film icons. Directed by Roman Polanski, produced by Robert Evans, written by Robert Towne, starring Nicholson and Faye Dunaway, shot by John Alonso, and scored by Jerry Goldsmith, Chinatown was nominated for 11 Academy Awards in 1974, but brought home only one: for its writer. Robert Towne was barely 40, and Chinatown his first produced original screenplay, his previous efforts having been literary adaptations, such as 1973’s The Last Detail. »

Polanski Refused Jail Release

6 October 2009 9:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Incarcerated director Roman Polanski has lost his bid for freedom after the Swiss Justice Ministry denied his appeal for release.

The Chinatown filmmaker has been behind bars in Zurich, Switzerland since 26 September, when he was arrested in connection to a 1977 child sex crime.

He is currently fighting extradition to the U.S. to face sentencing for having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor - a charge he pleaded guilty to before fleeing to France in 1978.

Polanski's lawyers argue U.S. authorities' attempts to fly the star back to America to face punishment are illegal.

But their request for the Swiss Justice Ministry to release him until an official decision is made on the extradition was rejected on Tuesday - because he is deemed to be a flight risk.

Swiss ministry spokesman Folco Galli says, "We continue to be of the opinion that there is a high risk of flight."

Galli admits U.S. officials have yet to formally request Polanski's extradition, but he's adamant it's only a matter of time.

He adds, "I assume this is a priority case in the United States." »

Embattled filmmaker Roman Polanski has been given a star on a Walk of Fame in Poland - one week after he was arrested over a 1977 sex crime.

The Chinatown director was taken into custody by Swiss officials on 26 September and is now battling extradition to the U.S. to face sentencing for having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor - a charge he pleaded guilty to before fleeing to France in 1978.

But the controversy has done little to keep Polish film bosses from honouring the controversial director, who was honoured with a plaque in Warsaw at the weekend (03-04Oct09).

The sidewalk tribute, which sits alongside stars for film icons like Marilyn Monroe, is emblazoned with a quote from Polanski reading, "Nothing is too shocking to me". »

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Platinum Edition) I just posted my review of this one (read it here) and I tried to keep it as short as possible all while managing to gush all over it. Seriously, this baby is packed with goodies and the film simply looks spectacular as Walt Disney's first feature length animated film comes to life in high definition. Snow White is 72-years-old and boy does it age well.

I reviewed the two-disc edition (or three-disc if you count the included DVD version of the film), but there are a ton of additional versions to buy including the collector's pack featured in the image to the left and then one that comes with a bunch of stuffed toys. Director Pulls Swiss Film Premiere In Support Of Polanski

5 October 2009 9:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Director Jan Kounen cancelled the Swiss premiere of his new movie Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky at the Zurich Film Festival on Friday to protest the arrest of Roman Polanski.

The Chinatown filmmaker was taken into custody by Swiss officials on 26 September in connection with a 31-year-old child sex case.

Polanski, who was due to collect a top honour at the film festival, is now fighting extradition to the U.S. to face sentencing for having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor - a charge he pleaded guilty to before fleeing to France in 1978.

A host of his Hollywood pals have come out in defence of Polanski, and Kounen showed his support for the controversial director by withdrawing his movie from the festival's line-up.

The film, about a 1920s love affair between the French fashion designer and Russian composer Stravinsky, was due to be screened on Friday night, but the showing was pulled at Kounen's request, festival spokeswoman Nadja Schildknecht confirmed. »
