Doctor Who fans can once again rejoice. Episodes of the classic series are now available on YouTube. These are officially sanctioned by the BBC, so there's no piracy in this instance.
In this case, it's a selection of a single episode from four of the ten existing Doctors. There is The Edge of Destruction with William Hartnell, The Krotons with Patrick Troughton, Carnival of Monsters with Jon Pertwee and The Caves of Androzani and The Twin Dilemma with Peter Davison and Colin Baker, respectively.
Classic episodes have been available online before. Netflix had a few in their library for subscribers. This is the first instance I recall in which the episodes are available to anybody in the world at any time.
I note that a bunch of the available stories are written by the fantastic Doctor Who scribe Robert Holmes. This guarantees quality writing to compensate for the poor special effects of the era. »

It looks like The Beatles are going to get a good dose of Doctor Who in the coming year. Variety reports that in a rather nice twist, the man who kicked off the Who revitalization, Christopher Eccleston, is slated to star as John Lennon for an upcoming BBC Four biopic called Naked Lennon. The story will focus on the big turning point for Lennon between 1967 and 1971 -- the dissolution of the band, death of manager Brian Epstein, the end of his first marriage, and then, of course, the entry of Yoko Ono into his life.
Naoko Mori, who played Toshiko in Torchwood, will play Yoko Ono. (For Hackers buffs out there, she also played the Tokyo Hacker back in the 1995 movie.) Rounding out the cast is Rory Kinnear as Epstein, Claudie Blakley as Cynthia, and Andrew Scott as Paul McCartney.
Now this is a BBC movie, but considering the reach of Red Riding, »

Allan Hyde and his friend Hadleyk
Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear. Yes, we're serious.
Because we all previously enjoyed seeing Allan Hyde (Godric in True Blood) in his wolf T-shirts, above we have a still from a short film he did with his buddy Hadleyk called Smile. Hadleyk seems to film a lot of silliness and post it on his website. While Smile is safe for work, some of the videos he tweets definitely are not. And I'm not paying your therapy bills if you watch them. The abs in the teaser photo belong to Taylor Lautner, the 17-year-old werewolf from Twilight. He's had a weird week. His movie made another $66 million, setting another record. And he was on the cover of Rolling Stone, but the interviewer kept asking him if he was gay. And apparently, »

Christopher Eccleston, “Doctor Who”, will star in a new John Lennon biopic called Naked Lennon, commissioned by BBC Four. The film covers a short chaotic period in Lennon’s life from 1967 to 1971 when his marriage to Cynthia was ending and his relationship with Yoko Ono was beginning. During that period Beatles manager Brian Epstein died and the group itself began to come apart. I like the choice to explore this transitional time in Lennon’s life. I’m not sorry they’re not going up through Lennon’s murder. That’s been covered enough and his assassin has gotten more air time than his victim. There’s plenty of drama in Lennon's life. Naoko Mori, “Absolutely Fabulous” plays Ono. Rory Kinnear portrays Epstein. The cast includes Claudie Blakley as Cynthia and Andrew Scott as Paul McCartney. No word on the casting of Ringo and George. The film was written by Robert Jones and is being filmed in »

There are a lot of changes coming to Scrubs this season, and here's a video of cast veteran Donald (Turk) Faison introducing the new cast memebers. TV's first "modern" Dr. Who Christopher Eccleston will be playing the late Beatle John Lennon in a four-part BBC production focusing on the musician's life from 1967-1971. In response to the Pox News controversy on a recent episode of Sesame Street, Sherrie Westin, executive vice president of the Sesame Workshop recently appeared with Bill O'Reilly to introduce Spill O'Reilly the latest addition to the Grouch News Network. Fox has announced its mid-season lineup, and you can check it out right here. Former Doctor Who lead Christopher Eccleston will be playing John Lennon in an upcoming British television drama commissioned by BBC Four about the life of John Lennon between 1967 and 1971. To further the Doctor Who connection, former Torchwood star Naoko Mori (who played Tosh on the show) will be playing Yoko Ono.
There is a lot of crossover between Doctor Who fans and Beatles fans, so there is sure to be some interest in the series. The roles I know Eccleston best for are those of the Doctor and Destro from G.I.Joe: The Rise of Cobra, so the question is if he can pull off a Liverpudlian accent. Since in the aforementioned roles he's done a Northern British accent (I believe his natural one) and a Scottish accent, he's likely capable of it.
So what do you think? Is Eccleston a good choice for the role of John Lennon? »

At the end of Doctor Who's 22nd season back in 1985, the iconic Time Lord was supposed to promise his young companion Peri a trip to Blackpool for their next adventure. The scene was filmed and scripts for the next story entitled 'The Nightmare Fair' were written, but the BBC mercilessly axed the enduring series and the word 'Blackpool' was omitted from the transmission. The show returned 18 months later, though the proposed 23rd season was aborted in favour of 'The Trial Of A Time Lord'. Audio company Big Finish, much to its credit, has since collected what remains of the scripts and reassembled Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant to revive the time travellers and give fans an aural sense of what should have unfolded on their screens in 1986 had Michael Grade not turned into The Master. But unlike Spandau Ballet, was this '80s revival a worthwhile (more) »

Speaking to Kent News, Jameson - who is based in Tunbridge and played the svage Leela opposite Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor in 1977-1978 - revealed that Doctor Who related projects have kept her going in fallow periods. “Obsessive is one word but actually they’ve been my life line to the business,” Ms Jameson said... »

If you are tired of the great special effects, high production values and cool stories of the revamped Doctor Who currently airing on TV -- and I've seen the latest "The Waters of Mars" episode and it's quite, quite good -- then head on over to YouTube where you can catch some classic episodes from Who's 40 year history, spinning back to original episodes from the William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Peter Davidson eras of the series.
Sure, the special effects and the production values are shaky, forcing you to ramp up your imagination to smooth over the rough spots in the rubber suits and BBC backlot sets, but the stories from these classic era episodes remain just as cool as those in the modern eras. And the Doctors who headline these tales are just as compelling to watch as Tennant.

Many sci-fi fans wonder what classic Doctor Who might look like if the BBC bosses of the '70s and '80s could have budgeted more than £6 per episode for visual effects.
A new Who DVD set from BBC Video features a specially remastered episode that offers you just that experience.
Doctor Who: "The Black Guardian Trilogy" serves up a trio of 1983 Who episodes featuring Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor in a life and death struggle against a supernatural evil force.
A team of restoration and digital effects artists took the final episode of that trilogy ("Enlightenment" -- a well-written, high-concept adventure featuring a simulated sailing race in deep space) and laid in 21st Century CG visuals.
