Michael Moorcock to write Doctor Who story

15 hours ago | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Fantasy novelist Michael Moorcook will be writing a Doctor Who story. No, it won't be a script for the actual television show bur rather an original novel. He revealed this on his forum.

The mind boggles with regards to what a fantasy novelist like Moorcock could do with Doctor Who. He's used to antihero creations like Elric. Any spin he could put on the character would be interesting. As of yet, it's not even known which incarnation of The Doctor he'll be writing about.

The most appropriate Doctor for Moorcock to write about could be the first (played by William Hartnell), who had a subtle arrogance and sinister nature (arguably the least human of the bunch). I'd personally like to read a sixth Doctor story by Moorcock.

Moorcock has influenced legendary writers like Alan Moore. Whatever take he has on the Doctor Who universe will at least be interesting. What do you think? »

Doctor Who aliens - the truth is out there

13 November 2009 4:10 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

The enduring sci-fi series might seem out of this world, but the Daleks, Cybermen, Slitheen et al represent threats from closer to home

Doctor Who might be the last place you would expect to encounter hidden political messages, but the series has been most successful when combining tales of adventure with a subtle critique of contemporary social, political and cultural issues relevant to viewers' real lives. With its privileged access to generations of family audiences on Saturday evenings throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the series dealt with social realities disguised as teatime science fiction. When Doctor Who returned in 2005, the series successfully re-engaged with the mass audience lost in the 1980s, and the good Doctor is now considered one of the great British fictional folk heroes, alongside Sherlock Holmes, Robin Hood and James Bond. So could The Flood – the Doctor's latest alien nemesis – be a comment on localised flooding across the UK every winter, »

Moorcock to fly the Tardis

13 November 2009 7:03 AM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

Acclaimed novelist Michael Moorcock posted the following statement on his message board yesterday:

"Looks like it's official. I'll be doing a new Dr. Who novel (not a tie-in) for appearance, I understand, by next Christmas. Still have to have talks etc. with producers and publishers but we should be signing shortly. Should be fun."

By “not a tie-in” we presume he means he will pen an original novel featuring one of the Doctors. We find this very exciting news.

While there have been novelizations of television story arcs for decades, the first original novel dates back to just 1986. Led by the prolific Terrence Dicks, who has written adaptations and original prose, the line has seen many top-notch authors write adventures including a number well-regarded series of anthologies. »

Media Monkey's Diary

8 November 2009 11:25 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

✒Monkey hears that last Monday the News of the World held a training camp for top executives to teach them to be nice to their staff. Apparently James Murdoch is keen on such David Brent-like exercises, and the execs, in dress-down mode, were asked to perform simple tasks and then make encouraging comments about each other's efforts. They found the whole caper ludicrous, and a ghastly foretaste of a pallid future. It seems editor Colin Myler didn't stay for the whole course, and if so Monkey can see why – if you can't wear a suit or abuse anyone, what's the point of being a tabloid editor?

✒Reactions were swift and scornful following the bashing of other channels by Channel 4's Julian Bellamy in an Rts after-dinner speech on Wednesday. They rely too much on remakes of old shows such as Doctor Who and Minder (the terrestrials) or imports (Sky), said the normally amiable programming chief, »

'Doctor Who's hammiest ever villains

24 October 2009 11:00 PM, PDT | Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Doctor Who is more about entertainment than social realism and the show has relied on a procession of baddies to raise the hackles of the audience. Not always do we end up scuttling behind the sofa though, as on occasions certain over-the-top performances have provoked cringes and guffaws instead. In the wake of Elisabeth Sladen’s hamtastic turn as the Androvax-possessed Sarah Jane, we look at some other 'interesting' depictions of villainy in the Whoniverse over the years... Soldeed Graham Crowden’s performance in the 1979 story ‘The Horns Of Nimon’ is the purest piece of unadulterated ham in Who history. Theatrical is not the word. Stomping around the corridors of a spaceship with a wild-eyed glare and scowl, he delivered some shocking dialogue in the most overly enunciated pantomime-esque style possible. "You are all doomed. Dooooomed!!" (more) »

More Doctor Who tidbits

23 October 2009 6:03 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Prepare for some spoilers. Don't say I didn't warn you. By the way, Matt Smith is the 11th Doctor (or the 12th, depending on how they spin David Tennant's extraneous regeneration) in case you didn't know.

Actually, it's not that bad. From an article posted on The Doctor Who News Page, it is learned that his new companion, Amy, is a police officer. In a few photos, he also seems to be wearing the remnants of Tennant's outfit. From the description, the Doctor is probably going through some post-regenerative trauma. When has the Doctor ever regenerated without trauma? Never, I think.

I know they film out of order, but it feels odd to know already what his outfit is going to look like. Here is one other possible minor spoiler: in the scenes filmed, the Sonic Screwdriver gets destroyed (and Matt Smith was slightly injured in the process). Between »

David Tennant has travelled through time to top a list of the U.K's most popular Doctor Who stars in the sci-fi show's 46 year history.

The Scottish actor has played the Time Lord in the cult BBC series since 2005, taking over from acclaimed star Christopher Ecclestone.

And his five-year run, which ends in 2010 when newcomer Matt Smith takes over, is the viewers' favourite - he won almost 26 per cent of votes from readers of Doctor Who magazine.

Tennant says, "I am so proud of this."

Other actors to have played the famous character include Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee. There have been 11 incarnations of the Doctor, including Smith, since the show first aired in 1963. »
