Halloween Beasts of Horror: The Animals That Scare Us

22 October 2009 6:11 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

As the spookiest day of the year (Halloween) approaches, people start talking about what actually scares them the most. We’ve run several articles this month discussing horror films from multiple genres (Comedy, Sci-Fi, Thriller) and then we covered a list of “fun for everyone” Halloween films.

In too many instances people focus on the alien, zombie, ghost and slasher films to represent the horror genre - and while those are all truly frightening topics for films, I think that ultimately one of the scariest horror sub-genres often gets overlooked: Animals gone crazy!

Whether it’s by land, sea or air, creatures of every imaginable size and shape have terrorized us for decades. Some are exotic animals, others are extinct beasts brought back to life by the magic of Hollywood, while still others hit closer to home and make us question if we should even own a pet. Come join »

‘Camera Obscura’, Anticipating Mwg’s Paranormal Thriller

19 August 2009 10:49 AM, PDT | Tubefilter.tv | See recent Tubefilter News news »

To create the entertainment of the future, writer-director Drew Daywalt reaches back into the past to fuel his imagination. The creator of Camera Obscura, the upcoming supernatural thriller web series from Mwg Entertainment, draws much of his inspiration from the short form storytelling of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, focusing on the horror of anticipation. Camera Obscura shares the sense of dread prevalent in such literary classics as Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven," and the works of H.P. Lovecraft. The series follows Clara, an orphan brought up by her alcoholic, absent grandfather. After he dies, she finds a camera that belonged to him, and discovers that it can capture demons. She also discovers that her grandfather's work was not done, and it falls on her shoulders to complete his task. It's a nice little family story with a whole lotta' scary going on. Rare Movie Alert! Warren Oates In Detective Thriller "Chandler" Tonight On TCM

13 August 2009 5:23 AM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

It was rare for the great character actor Warren Oates to get top-billing in a film, so you may want to be on the alert for Turner Classic Movies' presentation of the rarely-seen 1971 detective film Chandler, which implies (incorrectly) that it has an affiliation to the work of Raymond Chandler. The film was critically lambasted by the few who saw it when it opened on an MGM double bill with the equally rarely-seen Clay Pigeon. Nevertheless, second-rate Oates is still worth watching. The movie is being telecast tonight at 4:30 Am (Est). »

Trailer For The Box Online

24 June 2009 11:39 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Richard Kelly Makes Straight Thriller Shock! The Box, adapted from a short story by Richard Matheson (I Am Legend, Duel) stars James Marsden and Cameron Diaz. Check out the super-tense new trailer here. Isn't that the theme from Saw?The writer-director of the awesome-as-it's-supposed-to-be Donnie Darko, and the what-the-hell-is-it-supposed-to-be Southland Tales (he also wrote the screenplay for Domino) has clearly had a career re-think following Southland's production problems and box office disappearance. If this trailer is anything to go by, the self-indulgence has been truly reigned in, leaving something leaner and more focused in its place.Which is not to say it doesn't look as if there are some nicely bizarro touches in there. We like the Father Christmas / train wreck snippet particularly, although we're less convinced by the CGI splodge on Frank Langella's face. The story was adapted once before, in 1986, as a Twilight Zone episode. The movie's »

Sometimes the Catalogue will cover new releases of older films, and sometimes it will feature exactly what the title implies, back catalogue items. These will normally be from smaller specialty labels that have formed the backbone of the horror fans ability to build a truly representative collection of their favorite films. I'm proud to start this column back up after a two year hiatus and promise to work hard to recommend films that you're in danger of forgetting about, have maybe never heard of, or that might be ready to go out of print.

I'm also proud that the first edition of Catalogue is all about Synapse Films. Anybody who goes to conventions and has stopped by the Synapse table has not only seen first hand the amazing array of labor of love releases and Special Editions they produce, »

Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 After the hundreds of pages I have written and edited about Richard Matheson, it’s tough to sum up his significance to film and television in a few sentences, but here goes.  Start with the movies that would never have been made if he hadn’t written the novels or stories—and in many cases the scripts—first:  the Hugo Award-winning The Incredible Shrinking Man, the Emmy Award-winning Duel (Steven Spielberg’s feature-length debut), The Legend of Hell House, Trilogy of Terror (with Karen Black’s Zuni-doll smackdown), the Oscar-nominated Somewhere in Time, the Oscar-winning What Dreams May Come, Stir of Echoes, and a little half-billion-dollar hit called I Am Legend (plus its two previous incarnations, The Last Man on Earth and The Omega Man).

Now add his adaptations of works by Edgar Allan Poe (House of Usher, Pit and the Pendulum, »
